Yes it's now common to get temperatures in the high twenties every summer. It is not common to have temperatures in the high thirties up to 40 every summer.

Temperature records are going to be broken tomorrow and Thursday. My granddaughter's secondary school is closed tomorrow and Thursday because the buildings are not designed for heat as high as predicted and they cannot keep the pupils safe.

This week's heat is abnormal.

@Freshtona and @JustinesGraspingAvaricelet me guess? You’re in the north? I think anyone commenting on a weather thread to say ‘oh you’re all babies’ should say which region they live in. Or whether they work in an air con office. Maybe you don’t work and just sit in your pants all day eating ice cream. The south is boiling hot. It’s a red weather warning. But I’m sure you both know better.

Gosh this is really sad. There’s always this side of things that nobody thinks about.

Respect to your mum for what she does. My Nan is in cognitive decline due to mismanagement of her diabetes over the years and it’s a hard thing to watch.

I've seen so many posts on my FB feed from my peer group (50s) scoffing at the idea this is anomalous because "we survived the summer of 76" and I'm a bit embarrassed at their self centred and superior stance, as while a good number will be able to take all the sensible measures, there are plenty of vulnerable groups that are at real risk - elderly, children, animals and the homeless to name a few.

Also, it's not just the heat - thunderstorms can cause all sorts if havoc, just check out videos from the cloudburst that had the streets of Glastonbury looking like rivers last night I think it was.

Are we so far gone as a society that any attempt to mitigate / educate on the effects of what is extreme weather with an infrastructure not designed for it is regarded as "hysteria"?

I believe one child has already died in a hot car, so keep on with the "hysteria" if it makes people more aware and such tragedies can be avoided.

I’m certainly not asking for special dispensation for myself, yet my FIL has COPD (20% lung capacity as it goes and has oxygen 24 hours a day) and my DF has severe Asthma. Stick them on a bus shall we and tell them to carry on regardless because everyone else has to?

Don’t have an air conditioned car? ‘Well that’s your fault’. Late for work? ‘Well leave earlier’.

Old school mentality, end of. No, I’m not talking about ‘well I don’t cope well in the heat’, I’m talking about people who could literally die because of the conditions. So up yours for bowing down and complying.

For some people, as detailed in posts above, yes it’s a serious concern. But for others it’s just a matter of adapting for a couple of days and following sensible advice. For the latter group panicking needlessly doesn’t help anyone.

Where I grew up we hit 35-38°C for a week or 2 at a time over the Summer months and staying at 27-30°C for those cooler days. Nobody died prematurely, schools stayed open (but we sometimes were allowed to leave an hour earlier) people carried on working.
The only difference to the uk is that we have lots of lakes and outdoor swimming pools to cool down in.

I'm sure people will be just fine as long as they are sensible. (Plenty to drink, stay in shade / indoors and get a cold food bath or shower!)

A coat? You're having a laugh unless you are trying to suffer from heatstroke. It's been 34 degrees here and tomorrow is up to 39. All schools are shut, even nurseries are shutting early and several small shops near us are closing around 1.
It's not a joke. People die in this heat. Yes next week looks cooler and thank goodness because as much as I like the heat, this is unbearable.
Maybe you aren't in a red area but a coat is still ridiculous.

As they should be. However there is a big difference between taking precautions and the outright hysteria on many of these threads.

Unfortunately I cannot deal with any raise in temperature well. I have erythromyalgia which causes red rashes on my skin which burn intensely. The heat is really aggravating this. My whole body feels like it’s on fire. I have three fans on me at the moment and my skin is still burning. All I want to do is put ice on my skin, but I can’t as it can cause tissue damage. I’ve tried everything I can think of. I feel so ill, hot and in pain. To many like me, with medical conditions and disabilities, heatwaves are a big deal. Not everyone can deal with the heat, many will die because of it. Those who love the heat and can cope with it, fine, great, but not everyone can, and that doesn’t mean they are being hysterical. We are trying to stay alive in difficult conditions.

I got told of on a differnt thread because i said i have air con fitted.
Due to the last heatwave i planned not to suffer if we have another one.
But the words air con and planning get you told off.

Other countries in Europe are taking precautions so they aren’t all carrying on as normal

It's absolutely FKN ridiculous. I am amazed the rest of the world manages to function. God help us if they were all like us. Just crack on and stop moaning.

And yes, I did have to commute to work on a train and yes mum home office is like a cauldron, but we moan for 10 months a year about the cold.

And yet here you are posting about it.

My Mum is a home carer for those with dementia and in cognitive decline. Today she encountered those she cares for getting dressed in shirts and jumpers, putting on their heating and gas fires and opening their curtains. Every time she corrected they would revert. She’s only with people for 1-2hrs max and then she has to leave them.

Sometimes it a very very frightening problem.
