To cancel date over his ‘joke’?

5th date tomorrow night with a man who has been great up to now. I’ve had to push the time back by an hour - said I’ll need extra time to freshen up after work. His reply to me was: “No worries, can’t be having a whiffy growler lol”.

Is that date cancelling worthy or am I being a bit too harsh?

again you seem to have a skewed opinion of women or even men who enjoyed in-betweeners, it was well written and the audience recognised themselves and their peers , as for the characters they were all successful boys and girls getting plenty , not as much as some claimed , all wanting more and the most successful of the boys was the 1 with the lowest standards ,pretty much summed up life .

Donniemac · 27/06/2026 23:23

Of course prosperity comes from risk taking. That's just unarguable economic theory. We want men to take risk ( and we are arguably much better than the ladies at doing so-but that's another battle😅). So the lad took a risk and it went a little bad. Happens-that's the nature of risk. The dumping response would be that of an immature girl who doesn't understand the nature of strong relationships brtween men and women. In metaphor language- the response of a princess, not that of a queen.

PretendToBeToastWithMe · 27/06/2026 23:12

YANBU that is a grim comment and unforgivable. I’d be cancelling.

SparklyBrickViper · 27/06/2026 23:04

Cancelled.

Freshen up is not vulgar, it just led to the lad's remark, that upset his girlfriend, as a follow on. Little bit of a risky comment, fair play, but we want men to take risks-that's where prosperity comes from. Take risks-sometimes they go wrong. Any girl worth anything knows that, and makes allowances. If it's a 'dumping' issue, she's a wee bit too immaure to cope with a worthwhile relationship (imho).

Is the ‘worthwhile relationship’ in the room with us?

’Whiffy growler’ isn’t, strangely enough, common parlance in prosperous circles. Unless by ‘prosperous’ you mean reaching the dizzying heights of being most successful seller of knock off cigarettes and weed in the neighborhood.

where did I say it was for everyone, I literally gave 2 extremes and said we fall in between , not sure wether you used the c word for shock value or thought it was clever, I dont type the word as wasn't sure it'd pass the moderators . I also didn't say the man or woman was still 14 yr old or like the TV show inbetweeners with 30yr old men and women playing teenagers. but the audience who found the show funny were certainly adults who it reminded them of childhood

I used ‘cunt’ because that was the word being addressed. I don’t consider the use of it in this context to be either clever or shocking, no.

I can’t say my school experience was anything like The Inbetweeners. As far as I’m aware though, the characters were laughed at for being the idiotic, female-repelling specimens they were explicitly presented as.

That's where prosperity comes from?

make it make sense? A leap from a crude comment to being an economic provider? As though there's any link at all?

You can be a economic powerhouse without being smutty.

IDontHateRainbows · 27/06/2026 22:46

My husband made an inappropriate joke very early in dating that many.on here would have said was a dumping offence. I let him know I wasn't happy, he apologized and never did it again.

If all else is good give him a second chance but let him know it's out of order and see how he reacts.

Freshen up does have sexual overtones in it.

It really does not.

cheekybtch · 27/06/2026 17:13

Gosh - how uptight are all of you pulling sick faces and being all snooty over a literal message? It's just a joke, it really wasn't that deep. I'd have laughed. It was the fifth date, not the first. Get over yourself.

Raise your bar.

Don’t know any men like this. My husband is the opposite. Sorry your world is like this though. Genuinely.

I don't know any men like that. As far as I know none of my female friends are married to men like that.

This isn't a "NAMALT" but a Not All Women Have Low Standards When Picking A Man (NAWHLSWPAM)

estrogone · 27/06/2026 22:08

I dunno, I am on the fence.

I would find that really funny, in an Afterlife-esque way. These are the exact kind of jokes DH and I share (married for.30 years). My DH would say something like that to me and I would retort in a funny way (something like it's my growler and I will send it to the parlor when I please). So I wonder if he feels very comfortable already.

On the other hand after 5 dates, perhaps 15 hours of knowing you joking about smelly vulva is vulgar and a possible red flag.

Wolfpa · 27/06/2026 22:06

I have a friend who calls pork pies growlers , it really changes the tone of the conversation

Donniemac · 27/06/2026 22:05

Push and pull. See what happens😉

Waitingfordoggo · 27/06/2026 22:03

Oh well, @ThisKookyExpert, if your DH found it funny, the rest of us must be wrong 🤔😂

Waitingfordoggo · 27/06/2026 22:02

Donniemac · 27/06/2026 20:58

Hmm! If a girl dumped me over that, I'd just think she wasn't worth having. It was a bit crass, but she did say she needed to 'freshen up'. Men should not be Andrew Tate's, but also mustn't be bullied by their women folk. Male energy is enormously valuable. It's a huge mistake to try to suppress it.

What absolute twaddle. 🥱

Stoict · 27/06/2026 21:52

Loveacrumpet · 27/06/2026 18:40

That really made me chuckle, it’s a bit of banter what is wrong with everyone. All you needed to do was make a cheeky banter back. If he’s lovely in all other respects. I like a man who can make me laugh & have a bit of banter with. I’m in my 50s so it’s what we did in my day.

I am 55. And didn’t tolerate crude unamusing misogyny in my younger years, or now. I have always had high standards and no regrets. That’s how I ended up with a decent man.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 27/06/2026 21:51

ThisKookyExpert · 27/06/2026 21:45

I Just read this to my DH and he burst out laughing. For goodness sake if this man is actually a misogynist and it’s taken you 5 dates to work that out then something is amiss. It’s a joke, crude and a bit silly but surely the context of all your other dates matters otherwise why have you been on five dates with him? I think the comments writing this guy off are ridiculous

5 dates in and just slept with her, still on good behaviour terms to me, not making manky jokes about her dirty vagina. How would he like it if he joked about his dirty dick? Though he’d probably like that. She’s said it gives her the ick.

BeAzureRaven · 27/06/2026 21:50

Valpolichella · 27/06/2026 21:45

“Male energy is enormously valuable”? And they “mustn’t be bullied by their women folk”? FFS! 1950 called and they’d like you back, immediately. I mean, your attitude was shit back then too, but it really doesn’t belong in 2026.

What is up with the 'freshen up' being seen as vulgar? I'm American, and that is seen as completely innocent and acceptable. Is there some other interpretation in Britain? I've seen at least 2 posts objecting to the phrase.

Manonhere · 27/06/2026 21:49

Surely it depends on the previous dates? Has there been banter? Smutty jokes etc.
If not then I can see why it shocked you

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 27/06/2026 21:49

I couldn’t get past that. Way too familiar and not even funny.

It was a parody. I laughed my bum off.
