To cancel date over his ‘joke’?

5th date tomorrow night with a man who has been great up to now. I’ve had to push the time back by an hour - said I’ll need extra time to freshen up after work. His reply to me was: “No worries, can’t be having a whiffy growler lol”.

Is that date cancelling worthy or am I being a bit too harsh?

Yeah after our last date. I’ve definitely got the ick now.

not saying its right but thats the context for his comment, because at a guess it will presume at some point you to will "dance" again so to speak

Charlize43 · 23/06/2026 17:14

Whiffy growler = Smelly dog?

What conversational charm!

Bah! Sit in your garden with a large jug of Margaritas and enjoy the evening, al fresco and al solo.

NormasArse · 23/06/2026 17:13

I laughed 😬

NigellaWannabe1 · 23/06/2026 17:12

I’d be instantly turned off, I’m afraid.

Jollyhockeystickss · 23/06/2026 17:12

No judgrment honestly but you shouldnt have slept with him as hes now acting not respectful and also telling you hes expexting sex tonight, if you like him i would message him to say the comment is not respectful and you dont appreciatte that hes hinting he expects it and see what he says, if you do see him tonight dont sleep with him, to be honest i wouldnt be able to see past it

If it was someone I knew quite well I would find it funny, but not someone I've only seen five times.

This. I am just baffled at somebody thinking that was an appropriate thing to say to somebody you are in the early stages of dating.

AltitudeCheck · 23/06/2026 17:12

As you are shocked enough to have posted on MN I'm guessing he's been polite and well mannered up to now and this is well outside what you are comfortable with.

My OH is from Yorkshire and growler is pretty common slang so I wouldn't be offended by the term itself. I would be pissed off that some bloke I hardly knew was talking about my genitals in the 1st place though!

In my experience, those little warning signs early on that you aren't on the same page should be listened too.

Blanketyblank04 · 23/06/2026 17:10

It would put me off!!

NotMyRealAccount · 23/06/2026 17:10

I think I might be tempted to reply with, "Growler? Is that a typo?" and see whether he dug himself in deeper (in which case, yes, dump, he's going to be tedious and embarrassing at best) or acknowledged that it was a really stupid thing to have said.

Modern dating is literally the ghetto.

Isitevensummer · 23/06/2026 17:09

I wander if this is a case of him blurting out something he world never usually say? Its grim nonetheless, but I wouldn't necessarily hold it against him unless it's a growing trend

Boxoffrogs21 · 23/06/2026 17:05

For me, it’s not even the terminology (which I’ve never heard before, but sounds revolting) - it’s the immediate sexual reference when you’re just talking about normal life like having a shower when you’ve come home from work on a swelteringly hot day. It’s just so unromantic and, whilst obviously relationships rely on sexual attraction, it shouldn’t be the only thing you think of (and even if that is how a lot of people think, have the manners to keep it to yourself.) I think I’m better suited to old-fashioned ‘wooing’ than the modern dating scene!

wheredidtheteago · 23/06/2026 17:03

Depends how bantery you are with each other I suppose, I would find this funny but I can understand why some wouldn’t.

Andnowshesatoddler · 23/06/2026 17:03

It would definitely be one step over the line. If he already had one step over it would be a gonner if it was genuinely just a gross misjudged trying to be funny comment I would just be one foot over the line but next time . . . .

hididdlyho · 23/06/2026 17:01

Unless you've had previous banter using similar sorts of phrases I'd be quite shocked by the message. Does his humour generally seem a bit off piste? (I might coin 'whiffy growler' as a nickname for my dog as it's a pretty accurate description).

I think he’s hinting that he wants to have sex with you on this date. He’s gross. Why would a man think that’s what women want to hear.

GrandmasCat · 23/06/2026 16:56

Jesus! Release back into the wild pronto!

Eudaimonia11 · 23/06/2026 16:56

I usually think MN who post similar thread titles are quite precious with no sense of humour but not in this case.

It’s the word growler, it’s such a horrible word. There’s no reason for him to be referring to your body like that. I wouldn’t see him again.

Purplecatshopaholic · 23/06/2026 16:55

Oh jeez. How old is he? Sounds v immature. If my partner of a zillion years, who I would know was joking, said this, I’d probably laugh. A new man? No.

pilates · 23/06/2026 16:55

💯 cancel

OriginalSkang · 23/06/2026 16:53

It does imply that the relationship is based purely on sex

GilesTurnbull · 23/06/2026 16:53

Delete, block. He’s shown you his mysogyny. Run away now.

Is it just his way of hinting he wants sex? I'd bring it up. "That joke you made earlier, was that you hinting about something".. anyone can act normal for 4 dates, just be careful he isn't a secret douchebag(!)

InterIgnis · 23/06/2026 16:52

PenelopeJoanSterling · 23/06/2026 16:36

if its a one off comment then in context of no humans being perfect then otherwise where do you draw the line, eg the next boy friend makes a comment or similar do you dump that one then next etc yes its grim and it depends on context but unless your a robot then no one is perfect, @Datingwoee

Not being willing to deal with a man that comes out with…that…is hardly demanding perfection. I’d personally call it having basic standards.

And yes, I wouldn’t hesitate to keep dumping.
