To cancel date over his ‘joke’?

5th date tomorrow night with a man who has been great up to now. I’ve had to push the time back by an hour - said I’ll need extra time to freshen up after work. His reply to me was: “No worries, can’t be having a whiffy growler lol”.

Is that date cancelling worthy or am I being a bit too harsh?

OP posts:

The OP didn’t bring it up. She didn’t say ‘Let’s delay the date for an hour so I can wash my vulva ready to have sex with you’. She said she wanted to ‘freshen up’ and although a couple of posters have interpreted that as meaning washing genitals (🤔) I think to most people it means have a shower/brush teeth.

I know right! This place never ceases to amaze me! According to a few people here. 'I'm going to freshen up' means 'I'm going to wash my vulva.' WTAF?! 😂

I’m not “clenched up” either and most people “like a laugh”. I just don’t think its funny.

You can get away with a dirty joke with someone you know really well, or if it’s genuinely funny.

A tired stereotype about a vagina, delivered to someone who you don’t know well but have had sex with is puerile and disrespectful.

Yep. And call me old fashioned, but I wouldn't be shagging someone by the 3rd/4th date either (as the OP appears to have done.) And imagine having sex with a man and almost immediately afterwards, he mentions you making sure you clean your smelly fanny!

Do you think he was maybe hinting at something @Datingwoee ?

Pssedoffathis · 23/06/2026 21:19

I would have to have known a man a few years to be able to laugh that one off.so yeah, no decorum, cancel the date.

Waitingfordoggo · 23/06/2026 21:19

chocoluv · 23/06/2026 21:05

Even though OP brought it up first?

I wouldn’t think anything about talking to someone about their sweaty balls.

I would have found his comment funny and I definitely wouldn’t cancel a date over it.

But I would add - for him, it may be a sigh of familiarity. Like farting in front of each other when you are a couple etc.

Euw that is gross. People fart in front of each other? On purpose?

Housebashing · 23/06/2026 21:18

I think it’s a yellow card, not a red
But he’s definitely on a final warning

Is “growler” slang for vagina?

Urban dictionary says so - I had to look it up too!

sugarrosepetal · 23/06/2026 21:14

Does his name begin with A?

localnotail · 23/06/2026 21:13

It depends on the context. But from your reaction I doubt this is the kind of language you used up to now while chatting so I would firstly make sure he knows you are not amused and dont find it finny - and secondly, would re-evaluate how suitable you are. Some people "get" this kind of "banter", some - don't. If up to now he was a perfect gent and after having sex thinks he can talk to you like this.... I would find it very off putting.

Hollybobs1 · 23/06/2026 21:13

I'm sorry but I did laugh 😂 I personally wouldn't cancel a date over that comment.

Jane143 · 23/06/2026 21:11

I’d find it funny and a bit flirtatious

Waitingfordoggo · 23/06/2026 21:09

AmazingGreatAunt · 23/06/2026 19:46

Crikey, so you have never had a date with an airline pilot in the middle of his "office" shift.
Young people have no idea.
However, you should not have sais why you needed the extra 30 minutes.

Young people? I’m middle aged and would immediately lose attraction for a man who spoke like this.

MyMiniMetro · 23/06/2026 21:09

I’d just point out (in person) that you found that joke a bit crude and maybe that’s a level of language to save for jokes with male friends. We can all be guilty of not reading the room so don’t hate him completely. It’s not a funny comment but if he’s otherwise a nice guy give him a chance.

Of course if he gets the arse and makes it about you being ‘sensitive’ then give him the immediate heave-ho. The only right response is a bit of apologetic humility and a good natured sorry.

MrsClattenburg · 23/06/2026 17:49

No, whiffy growler made me 😆

Me too. It's daft!

Gymnopedie · 23/06/2026 21:06

Well apart from the fact that his choice of words would have given me the ick on it's own, because it's crude and gross from someone you've only met four times, what would put me right off would be that that was his first and immediate thought. It tells you what's uppermost in his mind and if all he wants is sex then it's not a relationship I would want.

menopausequeen · 23/06/2026 21:06

Stop now

I love a man that makes me laugh. This comment would be a deal breaker for me only because It would stick in my mind he actually thought like that 😳

Oohanothername · 23/06/2026 20:52

No, you're not. I did too. And my husband did. And my mate 🤣 Men ARE juvenile and a bit daft. It's a daft comment. Not a hanging offence

It`s mumsnet everything a man does or says will be offensive.

movemountains · 23/06/2026 21:04

NotaHoooo · 23/06/2026 20:59

If i took mumsnet dating advice i would be single forever and never have sex.
Bloody hell some on hear need to get of their high horse and take a joke.

Yes its either grim comments about women's fannies being smelly or no sex for the rest of your life.

Those are the ONLY two options. 🙄

Good grief

shuggles · 23/06/2026 18:51

@Datingwoee It's a crass joke, but is it worth ditching someone over this?

There are loads of men who do things a lot worse than this, and yet, their partners don't break up with them.

Is this not a situation in which you can say you didn't like the joke because of X, and then move on?

Sorry but this has to be one of the most ridiculous comments on the thread. The fact that some women put up with a lot worse from men means all women have to accept childish, puerile attempts at humour/seduction? Raise your bar FGS!

Maybe it’s better than shagging blokes who refer to your growler.
