To cancel date over his ‘joke’?

5th date tomorrow night with a man who has been great up to now. I’ve had to push the time back by an hour - said I’ll need extra time to freshen up after work. His reply to me was: “No worries, can’t be having a whiffy growler lol”.

Is that date cancelling worthy or am I being a bit too harsh?

I'd say it depends how you feel about him in general.
To me, I see that as a clumsy comment of someone who didn't want you to panic about being late and didn't really know what to say to make you feel comfortable, so tried to make a joke.
Do I find it funny? No. Would it offend me? Also no.
Personally I'd either laugh it off or if it really makes you feel uncomfortable, tell him outright and then take it from there.

As a moderately feral bloke… I’d cancel it.. it’s not such much that it’s offensive (which it is) but it’s just so lame (far worse crime)

Exactly. Its evidence of someone with very slow wits.

Krevlornswath · 23/06/2026 21:59

Shame it took as many as five dates for him to reveal he was as pathetic and crude as this but it is what it is. Yes I'd cancel. It's not about someone being perfect, it's about the kind of person you might actually want to spend your life and time with and I couldn't possibly imagine someone who says things like this would be better company than simply being alone.

if its a one off comment then in context of no humans being perfect then otherwise where do you draw the line, eg the next boy friend makes a comment or similar do you dump that one then next etc yes its grim and it depends on context but unless your a robot then no one is perfect, @Datingwoee

There a big wide world between perfect & wiffy growler 4 dates in

PomplaMouse · 23/06/2026 21:55

This is a sophisticated website and us longstanding members will most certainly not be amused at the notion of one washing their genitalia.

Penis beaker.

DierdreDaphne · 23/06/2026 21:54

Ooohletsgo · 23/06/2026 17:23

It’s not really funny but it’s not offensive either.

I think you’re being a bit dramatic.

Really?? I think most people would find it offensive, as you can see from the comments on here. So you can't just declare it isn't 😒

banmusk · 23/06/2026 21:54

He's taking a fucking liberty there. I would NOT be happy!

Pinkie89 · 23/06/2026 21:53

Instant ick. How old is he?

GiddyRobin · 23/06/2026 21:52

I have a really dark sense of humour, I find plenty of "off colour" things funny and will say them in front of the right audience, but this? No. No, I don't think that's remotely funny at all and I wouldn't be having it.

It's misogynistic, it's fucking crude, infantile and honestly? It isn't even fucking funny. It's just yuck.

Absolutely not a cat's chance in Hell would I be seeing him again.

OneBlueFinch · 23/06/2026 21:50

Tell him that you don’t want him and his smeggy cock any where near you again , and block

Badgerrtime · 23/06/2026 21:49

I had to google that as I've never heard it before.

I'd cancel. Crude and shows you what he's thinking about for date!
Online dating is the absolute Pitts. I learnt that last year having been single for over 10 years. Still single and won't be doing online dating again.

Burntout307 · 23/06/2026 21:48

Gross, I hate that kind of humour. I think I'd call him out on it to see his reaction.

I am curious though......I don't get why it would take an hour longer to get ready just because it is hot. Surely you would have been having a shower after work before a date regardless of the temperature?

Pipsquiggle · 23/06/2026 21:47

If you think you could tell him how crude that statement was, I would be tempted to do that, see his reaction, then decide if he is worth your time.

Some men are actually pretty apologetic and appreciative of pointing poor language/ behaviour.

Others will dismiss your feedback as 'bants' - these are the dickhead brigade

I’d find it funny and a bit flirtatious

I'm not sure discussing a smelly fanny really is flirtatious to me, but we are all different and its different strokes for different folks. I definitely think it's a sign he isn't for OP, and clearly there's people out there he is for and would love smelly growler chat with him..... I think she should cut him loose so he can find someone like you who thinks he's a laugh. Better to fully enjoy everything than try and ignore the bad bits especially at date 5.

ClayPotaLot · 23/06/2026 21:44

I think there are people for whom that's fairly everyday language and back and forth. And if I'd met them in that sort of environment and liked them enough to date them then I'd probably find it it okay. But unless that was the way I'd generally been talking with someone before that point, I would be put off by it.

Thepeopleversuswork · 23/06/2026 21:42

NotaHoooo · 23/06/2026 21:01

Get over ya self.
It`s a joke.

I know its a joke. Its a shit joke.

Waitingfordoggo · 23/06/2026 21:42

chocoluv · 23/06/2026 21:36

Surely you wash your vulva in the shower too?

So his joke still stands.

Of course we all wash our vulva in the shower. And that’s what this man decided to focus on and make a joke out of. Why didn’t he say: ‘Don’t want you having greasy hair/smelly breath/sweaty armpits’? Maybe because it would be weird. As the growler comment is.

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 23/06/2026 21:40

That'd give me the ick, I'd feel grossed out if dh said that now, let alone when we'd just started dating. If it's not for you, and you don't like that humour, it's better to know now and move on to someone more sophisticated!

Gowlett · 23/06/2026 21:38

The only thing is… Whiffy growler will keep popping into your head mid-shag. Dump him!

FrankieSpencer · 23/06/2026 21:37

Bigreddog25 · 23/06/2026 20:55

When people say 'freshen up' that always makes me think theyre talking about washing their bits 🤣 i dont know why! But it makes me hate it when people use that phrase. Maybe he sees it the same way 🤣

But yea- pretty gross to say that tbh. I'd be put off.

Edited

Me too!!! Maybe not necessarily washing your bits exclusively, but definitely washing smelly parts (washing pits, brushing teeth etc, including bits!) I just think it's a gross phrase that gives way too much info 😅
It definitely reads to me "we're going to have sex again so I need a shower after work"

chocoluv · 23/06/2026 21:36

Waitingfordoggo · 23/06/2026 21:19

The OP didn’t bring it up. She didn’t say ‘Let’s delay the date for an hour so I can wash my vulva ready to have sex with you’. She said she wanted to ‘freshen up’ and although a couple of posters have interpreted that as meaning washing genitals (🤔) I think to most people it means have a shower/brush teeth.

Surely you wash your vulva in the shower too?

So his joke still stands.
