To cancel date over his ‘joke’?

5th date tomorrow night with a man who has been great up to now. I’ve had to push the time back by an hour - said I’ll need extra time to freshen up after work. His reply to me was: “No worries, can’t be having a whiffy growler lol”.

Is that date cancelling worthy or am I being a bit too harsh?

Cancel. That’s foul.

I strongly suspect you're over-reacting, but I have no idea what a whiffy growler might be.

Spacedsunshine1 · 23/06/2026 22:46

Ugh grim! That's given me the ick and it's not even me going on the date!! I would have to cancel because 🤮

I commented earlier in this thread, a few pages in. This comment is not funny in 2026 for the majority of people who live in 2026. It is not 'dark humour', it is misogynistic, the type of thing Bernard Manning and Jim Davidson used to spout.

Those of you with long time partners who find this okay, fine. But do you really lack the insight that you do not understand this is totally inappropriate, questionable and a total red flag at the beginning of a potential relationship?

I am 50 but I am really lucky that my job means I have really close friendships with people in their 20s and 30s and this kind of shite is so common. One friend looks really young and gets loads of comments on online dating about her looking young and how much of a turn on this is! Would you want this for your daughter? Why in 2026 are men still being excused for this type of behavior and, why the hell are they still being raised in a way that they think this is still acceptable.

Full disclosure, I work in Child Protection. This remains a 'man/boy' problem and it is not limited to our usual service user group. There seems to be some kind of blindness in some parent-son relationships that creates men-children that can do no wrong. I do not mean this as a sweeping generalisation becaue I know lots of very lovely men. But there is a very particular type, and they are always men.

Jamesblonde2 · 23/06/2026 22:44

Haha what a knob.

Glitchymn1 · 23/06/2026 22:40

Depends, is that how you talk/your humour? If so, fine. If not- dump!

Ewwwww ... crass ... at least you haven't wasted too much time on him yet.

This. Ive the ick and ive never met him.

SevenYellowHammers · 23/06/2026 22:32

BillieWiper · 23/06/2026 15:59

That is rank. I mean if you'd been having really dirty scatalogical 'banter' up until then and you'd been talking about him not having a smeggy cock then I guess?!

But otherwise yeah I'd say sayonara to that one.

This!

GameOfJones · 23/06/2026 22:29

I wouldn't be offended by it, it's just lame and juvenile. But then I'm attracted to adult males, not Jay from The Inbetweeners. 🤮

Is he David Brent? No, actually, more like Gareth. I dont think even Brent would actually say that to the woman.

He was trying to be funny. Some of the women here will happily pay for a man dinner but moan at a simple dad joke.

A dad joke is something wholesome but cheesy.

This was a disgusting comment, whether it was meant as a “joke” or not.

LBFseBrom · 23/06/2026 22:18

I've never heard that expression before but it sounds vile.

I wonder if he just heard it somewhere and repeated without thinking. Is he quite immature?

When you see him, ask him straight what exactly he meant and why he said it.

Imseriouslyyouguys · 23/06/2026 22:17

Ugh how disgusting. I wouldn’t be going on any more dates.

IneedAniffler · 23/06/2026 22:11

So @Datingwoeewhat have you done? Cancelled?

Flowerlovinglady · 23/06/2026 22:10

It's bloody tough for single women now with men who just don't seem to understand the basic rules of civility any more. It's like a competition to see who can crack the crudest joke. If you're thinking it's date cancelling then it is - otherwise you'd just laugh along.

Ooh, what’s a ‘man dinner’ ?? A nice big juicy steak? a pot noodle? Cold beans on toast????

If i took mumsnet dating advice i would be single forever and never have sex.
Bloody hell some on hear need to get of their high horse and take a joke.

I can’t say I’ve struggled with either. Fortunately, we aren’t all
limited to social circles where this would be considered either normal or funny.

Wow, I’d cancel. Thats fucking minging. If he says that to YOU just imagine what he’s like with his mates.

Elaina87 · 23/06/2026 22:07

Ew, it would definitely put me off. Id probably give him another chance but he's on shaky ground.
