To cancel date over his ‘joke’?

5th date tomorrow night with a man who has been great up to now. I’ve had to push the time back by an hour - said I’ll need extra time to freshen up after work. His reply to me was: “No worries, can’t be having a whiffy growler lol”.

Is that date cancelling worthy or am I being a bit too harsh?

Hi OP. Can I ask what happened next?

Hmmm!! I understand. Compromise is difficult-takes lot's of experience.

You'd know all about how difficult it can be I'm sure 😂😂

It must have taken you a long, long, looooonnnnnnng time to convince someone, anyone, to 'compromise' to laugh at one of your 'jokes'.

kkloo · 05/07/2026 02:21

Donniemac · 04/07/2026 22:28

No. We expect you to have a sense of humour. Just like the midwives. It's not sexual assault, it's not disrespectful, it's not abusive, it's just humour. Which of course is risky. Sometimes it crosses a line. That's the way risk is. How come you don't get this?

Having a sense of humour does not equate to finding comments like that funny, what part of that do you not get?

Learning the English language and grammar shouldn't though.

Its funny - come on! He would probably be mortified if he knew it landed this badly. He obviously doesn't mean it - he's making a joke. I have two brothers - maybe this makes a difference? Red flags are dishonesty, being unkind to children and waiting staff or stealing all your money - not this??

Really? So tell us, dibbley, how whiffey is your growler today, given the heat and all? Give us the lol.

It's not hard at all with an emotionally intelligent man who's capable of treating women as equals and has any kind of handle on how seduction and humour work.

Gettingbysomehow · 04/07/2026 22:56

That would absolutely be the end for me. Cancel the date and cancel him. Yuck.

If you have to argue at women about compromising just to date you because you're so unfunny, antisocial and disgusting, there's nothing worth compromising for.

😂😂
I'm fascinated by what he thinks us women will get from this.

Like the other MRA/incel types on the thread, he thinks he is automatically superior to us, or at least more reasonable and rational and can therefore simply lecture us into it.

The irony of this being related to having a sense of humour is going to make my head explode, because on the one hand it's about as uptight and unfunny as it gets, but on the other, it actually is hilarious for absolutely none of the reasons he intends.

I SAY I SAY I SAY MY DOG HAS NO NOSE

It's not humorous, that's the point, mate. If you have to argue, whine, complain, guilt trip and make calls to "compromise" to get people to laugh at your joke, it means your joke isn't funny. Do you think stand up comedians start moralising at audiences, telling them to compromise and saying "at least I didn't sexually assault you!" when they do a joke that goes down the pan? Of course they don't. They realise the joke was shit and change the material.

Perhaps if we're really lucky they'll start pontificating about how "fascinating" it is that people don't laugh at shit jokes as if they're some kind of superior being observing a petri dish. Give me bloody strength. Do you realise how absolutely devoid of humour that is? How graceless and clodhopping?

Thinking people (women) are obliged to think your crap jokes are funny because you "expect" them is weapon level entitlement. Even knock knock jokes are better than this.

nocoolnamesleft · 04/07/2026 22:31

Humour is meant to be funny. No one has been able to explain what made that crass degrading comment funny.

You're supposed to compromise on what colour the curtains are or where to go on holiday, not whether or not you accept braindead misogynistic insults. If you have to argue at women about compromising just to date you because you're so unfunny, antisocial and disgusting, there's nothing worth compromising for.

Are people this fucking terrible at seduction? I think the Americans call it "having game" and it's depressing to see just how much of it some men haven't got.

Oh come on, ladies. Who do you think you're kidding? Go on a hen night with a crowd of midwives and you'll hear and see a lot rougher stuff than the lad's ill-judged remark that has upset you all.

Have you been on many of those yourself?

The humour isn't the same but seeing as you're equating the two, Oooh yeah cos that's what us women want isn't it? A man who behaves like a wild bunch of women on a hen night 😂

Does it work the same in reverse? Do you expect men to be attracted to women who behave like men on a wild stag night?

Yup. Not a lot of compromise there!!

Compromise on whether something disgusts you or not?

Good man, such a wonderful understanding of psychology, people and attraction that you've shown there,

This is by far the most fascinating thread on mumsnet for some considerable time. Clearly exposes the HUGE difference in male and female psychologies, and the total unwillingness to compromise. Good job making babies is easy...........otherwise the human race would've died out.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Historically, it's always been women that were expected to compromise. Or, indeed, forced to do so. Some of us are finally done with that shit.

you as a woman have no right to tell a man or any other woman how to think, what's funny, what their morals are, who they should or shouldn't sleep with. when I've time or inclination or indeed can be arsed will answer the cowards who posted replies to my points then blocked me from answering.. as I've pointed out earlier its not a class or breeding or education issue ... these faux middle class hyacinth bucket types are low class pretending answering and commenting how they think upper class women would do.. the facts are its humour and the genuinely upper class are absolutely filthy in humour and actions when amongst friends , and this claim of misogyny is again nonsense I would say in my experience that the vast vast majority of the population who put down other women wether it be on looks , morals, hygiene etc is from women.. Sarah milligan, Jo brand both different class and educational levels both make the same 'jokes' about women but if Russel Howard (for example) as he's not funny made the same joke the idiot brigade would scream misogyny

What are you even on about?

People can like filthy jokes, inappropriate jokes, dark humour etc, many different types of humour and still not find jokes about womens bodies funny and may get the ick if men make their jokes. Nothing wrong with that.

I disagree that it's mostly women are are misogynistic but even if that were true that does not mean we have to accept it from men also.

I know that plenty of black comedians make jokes about black people, but if white people made some of the same jokes then depending on what they were they may be considered racist jokes.

Your first paragraph is a joke considering you're on here trying to dictate to people, you appear to be trying to make out that people do in fact find this funny but that they're pretending not to in order to appear more upper class, but that they're wrong about what the upper class found funny, where on earth have you pulled this nonsense from? 😂

A large amount of people do not find comments like this funny, just accept it.

People are commenting what they think about it. I’m not sure why you’re so committed to thinking we’re only pretending to dislike it in an attempt to emulate the specifically British ‘upper classes’. By UK standards I’m new money, by the way, but I’m neither from the UK nor living in it, so I’m not too worried about where I fit within a system that has no relevance to me.

I do however have quite a bit of experience with people of the classes you’re feigning expertise on, as I went to school, work/ed and socialise/d with a mix of new money, upper middle, and upper/aristocratic individuals. I learned and became fluent in English whilst in the UK and within those social and cultural circles. ‘Whiffy growler’ was not a feature of the common vernacular, and I can assure you I was paying attention. Conduct such as that exhibited by the OP’s date is absolutely not normal, and he would be considered utterly rough and classless. In my own home country, which I dare say you have no experience of, that type of language would mark someone out as a džiber.

Waitingfordoggo · 01/07/2026 16:21

What do you mean ‘blocked’ you from answering @PebbleBeAPenguin? I don’t think that’s a feature of MN.
