Anyone else in the South East worried about Andy Burnham bringing in a land tax?

With it looking likely that Andy Burnhan will be the next PM, I was interested to see if anyone else in London / the south east were worried about potential tax raises specifically around the land tax rather than stamp duty ?

A lot of my friends who live locally are worrying that he will make the land tax for the South East so high in proportion to other areas of the UK that it will be financially very difficult to afford but then also extremely difficult to sell!!

BTW we have very standard house and garden but we live in an expensive area

Agreed

That is what income tax is for.

HappenstanceMarmite · 30/06/2026 15:45

KeepPumping · 30/06/2026 13:44

It should also be adjusted for household income.

Agreed

Why would it be hilarious ?

Schadenfreude presumably.

Ok that’s not LVT then based on property value, that’s more like income tax based on income.

No. There are 30 pages of opinions, conjectures and premature worry. A very different thing.

@DdraigGoch has suggested the germ of some interesting ideas on how CGT could be used to influence social policy, but that’s about it.

Your summary was off.

If you don"t have an income, or a low income you won"t be able to pay the property tax, if there are two or three people earning in the house you will likely be able to pay the tax?

If the aim is to tax the "wealthy" , then I suppose anyone living alone in a large home must now be considered wealthy. After all, we've apparently decided that wealth is measured by the unrealised value of the house you live in, rather than your actual ability to pay, or the actual profit.

People can't have it both ways.

KeepPumping · 30/06/2026 14:19

I can't keep up with MN.

One minute, a single person living in a six-bedroom home is an "asset hoarder" who should be pressured into moving to free it up for a family.

The next minute, a six-bedroom home with every bedroom occupied should face higher taxes because it's a large property.

If you don"t have an income, or a low income you won"t be able to pay the property tax, if there are two or three people earning in the house you will likely be able to pay the tax?

Is this tax on top of council tax or instead of? Here in Wales our CT is already astronomical. We would never be able to sell our house of they slap this tax on top.

Instead of both council tax and stamp duty. Lots if currently untaxed land being held by builders would also be subject to LVT.

I still think it should be based on the number of adults living in a property. Why should a single person pay the same as a household with six (for eg), adults when the six household use 6 x the local facilities and resources? Could also include a sliding scale of property value into the formula 🤷🏻‍♀️

Edited

That’s what I’m hoping re Tory policies
I will not vote Reform

I will be running to the polling station to vote Reform, as I did for Brexit.

Fair enough, wasted vote though really why not vote Reform and if it is bad, not sure it will be though, the Tories will be forced to get their act together to save us?

You don"t seriously think they can win a GE? Or do you mean favouring them with your vote? Smart conservatives IMO will defect to Reform, KB is good at talking but there is little substance there, all of it is just Reform policy.

This poster is keenly aware that the Conservatives had 14 years to do better, and failed.

Well they did a lot better than the current shit show has.

Why would it be hilarious ?

All they are demonstrating with their ‘hilarious’ remark OP, is that Labour really is the party of spite and envy. They might laugh now, but all these policies will do is drive more and more people to vote for parties like Reform at the next GE. And it will serve them right.

KeepPumping · 30/06/2026 12:19

nearlylovemyusername · 29/06/2026 22:36

Hung parliament. Ideally with Tory being the largest party, but I could do with no majority and no coalition.

Reform with Restore as main opposition is more likely than Cons as largest party, they are hated now, KS only won to get rid of them, large sections of that Labour vote will now switch to Reform IMO.

KeepPumping · 30/06/2026 12:15

BrownTroutBluesAgain · 29/06/2026 21:31

I’d need to see how things go up to the GE but I’m favouring the Conservatives atm
Tbh no one’s great

Still all sadly vague.

I lived in America for 15 years and know a bit about LVT in NY, for example. Do tell us more about why it is bad, because somehow I missed that bit.

You may be interested to know that three 21st century Nobel laureates in Economics are amongst the most ardent critics of supply side economics on the face of the Earth:

Joseph Stiglitz (2001), Paul Krugman (2008) and Angus Deaton (2015).

That’s great. It doesn’t go against the earlier point that economics has a range of views.

And your summary of the reasons why people are against isn’t what has been said either.

poetryandwine · 30/06/2026 09:42

EasternStandard · 30/06/2026 09:25

Nah. I’m sure a Nobel Prize means something still, even you dismiss everything.

Nah. And there really aren’t many well respected supply side economists any more. AI informs me that in recent surveys only about 1% ( that is not a typo) of economists believed in supply side economics, including the infamous Laffer Curve. 55-65% believe in incentivisation to some degree, and the rest do not.

Nah. I’m sure a Nobel Prize means something still, even you dismiss everything.
