AIBU to feel the media is pushing Starmer out?

To feel the media is forcing Starmer out and to be annoyed by this.

They need constant drama and content and this is done at the expense of the country. Starmer is boring but things are improving despite major problems like Iran in the background.

If this were 20 years ago he’d have been safe. They are treating government like football clubs and want Burnham as they think he’s more showbiz. These foreign owner media outlets don’t care about the stability of this country, they just want headlines and drama on X to drum up more drama for headlines and opinion pieces where the media all interview each other.

The country is becoming ungovernable because them and I’m sick of it.

I think this current trend (from past few years) of PMs having short tenures and being replaced isn’t a good thing for the country, whether it’s Labour or the Tories. It’s destabilising and takes time and attention away from issues affecting the country which need addressing. Both main parties do it sadly.

It’s also bad in an administrative sense. The amount of time, energy and resource that is wasted by the constant churn of ministers and prime ministers means that if anything is achieved it is achieved slowly. The number of outstanding ministerial decisions that will now be either delayed or simply not made at all because a new minister wants to do something else would shock the general public. When people talk about inefficiency in the civil service I’m sometimes tempted to agree but it’s largely caused by crap like this!

“Yes, can you imagine of it were the Tories with this debacle of scrambling around to bring in a leader.”

Because they have absolutely no history of that in the last couple of decades 🙄 😂
Maybe Labour are struggling because no one wants the poisoned chalice of being PM and being villified from the outset (whichever side they’re on) and the media frenzy around “Burnham or nothing” has only fed this. Not defending Starmer per se but the British public don’t seem to know what they want either.

Well maybe the British public should be given the chance with a general election. I'm not comfortable with the idea of bringing in a PM within such a short time frame, where it's uncertain what he represents. It's amateur hour but the whole debacle has been exactly that.

Yes, can you imagine of it were the Tories with this debacle of scrambling around to bring in a leader. The fact they haven't got anyone suitable within speaks volumes, especially since they won an election without Burnham even being an MP at the time. I wasn't really too fussed on Starmer, even after his ridiculous u-turns. However, when he had the audacity to stand up and talk about the far right thugs, he blew it. That's when he lost the fight, on top of treating pensioners and farmers with disdain.

Starmer wasn't dramatic enough for the media - he was boring as hell but plodded on. I do think he should have pushed Streeting on more female healthcare changes, put more laws in to support women and children as a lot of the work has already been done just needs going through the motions (various laws about peadophiles still having paternal rights etc still not official). Other than that he was doing a boringly better job than any Tory has done in all the time they had, but that doesn't sell papers. Trump isn't either because he talks a lot of hot air and ppl are bored of him and his ever changing "truth" and because they have no real journo's left to find actual news (hello AI) they have to force changes in parliament, who are just sitting ducks. Welcome to the future folks.

I don’t think lt was the boringness that saw him out.

So if Burnham fails it won't be because he is not for for purpose it will be because of the media. If only Boris Johnson had been afforded the same benefit. They both made mistakes so rightly they were highlighted.

Not what I said, is it? 🙄

38thparallel · 23/06/2026 09:12

The British media is run by rich powerful people, all of whom prefer a right wing, even hard right wing, approach.

Even the Guardian & the Mirror?

I think it is the fact we have such low quality people in government, and have to pick from them. The fact they have to parachute in a popular mayor as an MP, as even the Labour party MPs know none of them are fit to lead, is very telling.

The media do love a drama, but the last 10 years they haven't had to look far. It all started with cowardly Cameron running away after the Brexit vote. He set the precedent that leaders serve themselves, their own egos, and not the country That it's OK to for a party to have a change of leader when things aren't going their way - it is not!

MPs are also mostly cowards, they only think of their own jobs at the next election, and so we now have this constant merry-go-round of self serving behaviour from the very people who are meant to be serving the country.

Starmer gets zero sympathy from me. That self pitying chin wobble at his own exit does not sit well alongside the callous, unemotional display of a man who visited the aftermath of Southport. Two Tier (tear) Keir indeed. Don't they call him 2 minute Kier in Southport? As that is how long his visit took in total? He took 20 seconds to wordlessly lay a wreath, before running away and doing what he does best. Defending the guilty and persecuting easy targets.

Cameron was weak, but Starmer is abhorrent. He disgusts me. His knowledge of the legal system has allowed him to abuse it to his own end, in a way no other PM could.

My only hope now is that Bridget Philipson, and her bloody stupid Child Welfare Bill, gets the boot alongside Reeves. Oh and they both lose their seats in the next general election.

No it's not the media - if anything they don't report half of what goes on.

Absolutely. And he needs to stand firm and hold them off. The media in the UK has a strangle hold on British politics and it is absolutely undemocratic.

They CLEARLY favoured Truss over Sunak (I was no Sunak fan, but even a chimp on acid could see he was a better choice than her) and pushed her to the hilt.

And as for their character defamation of Corbyn over Boris the buffoon...

The media has too much power and are almost always wrong to boot.

This is not correct. The party membership favoured Truss and voted for her. It was the paid-up-card-holding members of the Conservative party who voted her in, because they preferred her to Sunak (who had just served as Chancellor) as they didn't want a continuity PM. Her support came from local Conservative clubs holding their own events, not from media reporting.
The markets however wanted Sunak and so scuppered her at the first opportunity to ensure he was crowned.
The media simply reported what happened.
The right-wing media pillared Crobyn and the left-wing media pillared the Tories, t'was ever thus.

And who told you that. The media? 🤔
any organisation has characters at the top who don’t agree on everything. But once the media get hold of it in politics they report as if leadership change is inevitable and resignation is the only way forward. When what we all need is stability.

Stability in a shit situation is just that; shit.
We need someone with a plan and the ability to execute the plan. Starmer has neither, so his demise was inevitable, literally from the winter fuel allowance u-turn.

Muttisays · 23/06/2026 08:28

Swiftie1878 · 22/06/2026 08:49

What a load of nonsense. The media is simply reporting what is happening.
The Labour Party’s two factions are eating each other alive.

Not saying other governments don't do this too - just need to be clear that the figures are not wholly improved due to people getting treated.
Typical political spin. isn't it? No counting of treatments, just waiting lists.
Apparently they did it with immigrants, too. The number of boat crossings was down this year ... but that was mainly due to the awful weather making crossings too tricky. Meanwhile, crossings by lorry went up but nobody mentions that.

What's your evidence that crossings by lorry went up?

The reports I have seen state that "other irregular migration" (ie everything apart from small boats) was down by 22% in the last financial year against the same period in the previous year. 4535 people in total. This is mainly people hiding in vehicles though it might also include some people entering via ferries/air.

No surprise when we literally watched them do the exact same thing to Corbyn. Corbyn was voted in by a massive surge in Labour members, I joined because of him. But the powers that be and Labour Party MP’s hated him. They couldn’t even acknowledge that he received far more votes that Starmer ever did in a GE and actually matched Blair in popularity in a vote. They also actively sabotaged any effort he was making to fight abhorrent anti semitism in the party and denied that it had ever been an issue previously (and remains so).

He fought anti-semitism. Are you having a laugh? He WAS the face of anti-semitism.

I am on holiday. I’m with three Essex girls,
im in a bar filled with Brits, and they’ve just chanted kier starmer’s a wanker
i am the only one shaking her head.
i am seriously worried for the country

Why in god’s name are you in a bar on holiday filled with Brits @CupOfTeaTwoSugars

Sounds awful. You are on holiday. Maybe find somewhere else to enjoy your holiday evenings.

Oh… just seen the 3 women you are so despairing about - you are actually clearly close friends with them and on holiday with them. And unbeknownst to your friends you are tapping away on mumsnet about you despair! 😂

Your imagination is running wild with you.

I will not indulge it.

Wont indulge it, cos she is right.

Poverty is multi-faceted and complex with many intersecting factors.
The statement that people need to change jobs then or earn more is ignorant and blows my mind how quickly the world forgot how much the minimum wage workers were the ESSENTIAL workers during covid. If they all miraculously found better paying jobs so they were deemed worthy of having children, the country would grind to a halt.

I'm not anti-trans, I'm pro women's rights.
I don't care what gender you are but I do care what sex you are, it could have a massive impact on my safety.
And what has intersex (outdated term) got to do with anything?Confused

Intersex is an umbrella term for a number of DSD's and still being used in the medical world, and it links to your comment. He didnt say 100% because there are cases where both applies. There are as many intersex folks as there are red heads.

And trans women aren't a risk to women's safety. That's men, who dont need to "pretend to be a women" to attack women if that is what they are so inclined to do.

Unsettledtoday · 22/06/2026 22:57

I listened to loads of election coverage on BBC newscast recently - which I used to enjoy. However this time it felt far less policy coverage and more gossipy speculation seemingly through 'senior officials' on WhatsApp. To me Laura K just enjoys the 'drama' these days.

I haven’t and would never vote Labour, I didnt like Starmer, he’s got his just desserts with his sanctimonious dribble to Boris in the past.

however I’d rather Starmer than the poop heap of other Labour MPs lining up, possibly except Yvette Cooper and David Milliband.

How can anyone back Johnson, and still call him Boris like he's your mate? He has blood on his hands and he laughs that the likes of you defend him! Please educate yourself

mullers1977 · 22/06/2026 22:43

Sarfldner · 22/06/2026 08:46

I agree, the media bay for blood and MPs respond and force the leader out.

It has become a complete and utter joke. MPs need to stand firm behind whoever their leader is and let them at least serve out their term. BoJo and Truss were different , their behaviours were so bad / damaging they just had to go but May, Sunak and Starmer did nothing wrong.

The reality is that a post Brexit Britain simply can’t thrive and no leader is going to be able to deliver otherwise in the short to medium term.

I wonder how many Brexit voters actually understand this

I wonder how many Brexit voters actually understand this - none they lack the ability to understand politics…

Starmer himself waa incredibly sanctimonious when he was the leader of the oppostion , telling Boris et al they should resign
You reap what you sow.

But Johnson killed prople and partied while we distanced - that’s why his resignation was called for, Johnson et al should be in prison
