AIBU to feel the media is pushing Starmer out?

To feel the media is forcing Starmer out and to be annoyed by this.

They need constant drama and content and this is done at the expense of the country. Starmer is boring but things are improving despite major problems like Iran in the background.

If this were 20 years ago he’d have been safe. They are treating government like football clubs and want Burnham as they think he’s more showbiz. These foreign owner media outlets don’t care about the stability of this country, they just want headlines and drama on X to drum up more drama for headlines and opinion pieces where the media all interview each other.

The country is becoming ungovernable because them and I’m sick of it.

I would normally agree, but he has to go, he's a loon.

Starmer is a loon? He may be many things, but he is not that.

he’s a decorated human rights barrister to start. You may not think his politics are great, but he is not silly or foolish.

This.

we seem to be in a cycle where we vote in a party and a leader, then almost immediately decide they’re doing a shit job - only we can’t have a general election so the calls are for the leader to resign.

we elect a leader. Personally I think leader swapping every year is as damaging as it would be to have a GE every year. The leader should stay as our elected prime minister, unless in exceptional circumstances .

we’ve had too many unelected prime ministers recently. Whatever you think of KS he was elected - and he’s not doing such an enormously terrible job he needs to go immediately.

Just as a side note, there is no such thing as an ‘elected prime minister’. We don’t elect a prime minister, we elect an MP, and the leader of the party with the most seats asks permission from the monarch to form a government.

This mess is entirely of Starmer's making, because while he had a plan for winning the election he didn’t have a plan to actually govern. He has admitted it took too long to develop one once in power, and of course the consequence of that was that it was rushed, poorly thought out through, difficult to articulate and incoherent. That’s before you layer on his lack of charisma and grating voice.

All he needed to do was articulate a vision that resonated with the public, build polices to support that and use his 400odd seat majority to do the difficult stuff early. Instead, because he was on the back foot he got mired in the sleaze and cronyism of accepting more freebies than Johnson, Truss, May, Sunak and Cameron combined before he could communicate his vision, and was then rightly slaughtered by the public and press for his hypocrisy.

Not surprising really, considering how many of them Starmer has sacked in his short tenure.

True what goes around

I agree, the media bay for blood and MPs respond and force the leader out.

It has become a complete and utter joke. MPs need to stand firm behind whoever their leader is and let them at least serve out their term. BoJo and Truss were different , their behaviours were so bad / damaging they just had to go but May, Sunak and Starmer did nothing wrong.

The reality is that a post Brexit Britain simply can’t thrive and no leader is going to be able to deliver otherwise in the short to medium term.

I wonder how many Brexit voters actually understand this

Absolutely. Any prime minister will have the same problems. We have no money (thank you Brexit). I hope the penny drops soon.

So, following your logic OP - Burnham is also listening to the media, correct?

Burnham is an opportunist who sees a chance to further his ambitions. I have written to my Labour MP to say that the country needs stability and competence and any MP who backs a leadership contest will not have my vote.

PetulaGordeno · 22/06/2026 09:14

When you go into the ballot box at a GE you vote for an MP but you also have a PM in mind.
And now and again in the past leaders got replaced but usually after several years and they usually had to make a real mess eg Thatcher and the poll tax, Blair and the war on terror etc
I voted Labour because I voted for Starmer and the majority of his policies and let’s not forget they won by a landslide.
Now other forces have become so powerful it’s hard to fight against them and I’m not doubting Starmer has made some errors as do all PMs.
What happened to Theresa May was an absolute disgrace. After years and years of service, a lot of it really competent, we ended up with Johnson because of his image, media support and that false appearance that he cared about the common man. Like the £350 million Brexit bus sticker - a figure made up and it worked.
Now the waters are so muddied with Reform and Restore it’s like Badenoch is invisible and yet she certainly speaks with sense at times.
Anyone who speaks with middle ground sense is not of any interest to the baying crowds.
I know there are real issues of concern which were here when Labour got in and they’ve had only a short time to deal with. And yes. I get the disquiet over the ‘what is a woman?’ question. I understand the ongoing fury about the boats crossing the Channel.
But instability creates weakness. Love or loathe the Americans, it’s very rare for them to unseat a President.
Would I have voted Labour if Burnham were the leader? I’m not sure. I live up North and I know he has a positive reputation locally, he has Cabinet experience, but he’s literally been fired in like a cannon ball.

CaesarAugusta · 22/06/2026 09:13

From what I have seen generally, the Labour Party as a whole doesn't want Starmer to go. I think they could lose a lot of members if they push him out.

I think this current trend (from past few years) of PMs having short tenures and being replaced isn’t a good thing for the country, whether it’s Labour or the Tories. It’s destabilising and takes time and attention away from issues affecting the country which need addressing. Both main parties do it sadly.

We’ve basically become how Italy used to be. In fact, we used to take the piss out of how unstable Italy was.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 22/06/2026 09:11

I agree OP. It's getting tedious and I feel sorry for Starmer really, he is being hounded out for no real reason. Let's see how long before the electorate turns on AB. Grass is always greener, isn't it?

senua · 22/06/2026 09:10

Immigration is coming down, NHS waiting lists are shortening, pot holes are being filled.
LOL. How sad to think his epitaph will be "but ... he filled potholes!"

In politics, it's always about the economy. He and RR have no idea about economics; they promised growth but in reality pulled every lever to kill it off.

There is evidence to suggest that the media affects society. However, in Starmer’s case it seems pretty clear that his own party wants him to resign.

Yes it’s his own party that wants him out.

Ihatethistimeline · 22/06/2026 08:52

If the mainstream media and X said he was doing a fantastic job, the Ministers would also agree he was fantastic because they are also glued to X etc. Immigration is coming down, NHS waiting lists are shortening, pot holes are being filled. Starmer and Ministers should have faced the media down and been strong.

Whoever is in next will face exactly the same after about 5 minutes, so I hope they have more of a backbone and a strong social media and comms team.

Agree and it'll be so much worse because the new leader will 'have no mandate' from the electorate (not my phrase, we elected the Labour Party not starmer, but it's what they'll say).

It's just step 1 of a farage and chums plan to get everyone rioting for an early election.

Sartre · 22/06/2026 09:02

What’s new? They did it to Corbyn, as did Starmer the backstabber. He’s merely getting his comeuppance.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 22/06/2026 09:00

millymollymoomoo · 22/06/2026 08:53

don’t care. His complicity to rake scandal, two tier society and controls on speech and other means he must go, Burnham will be worse. And Labour are completely hypocritical because they ( and lefties media) forced Boris out for much less - eg saying conservatives lost x councils and no longer trusted do must go yet Labour lost 3 times as many yet stay ….. along with many other reasons,

worst party ever

You lose all credibility defending Boris, who was only in it for personal gain.

Lomonald · 22/06/2026 09:00

x2boys · 22/06/2026 08:13

Starmer himself waa incredibly sanctimonious when he was the leader of the oppostion , telling Boris et al they should resign
You reap what you sow.

What has he done though? I am not being goady i genuinely don't understand all the hoha, Andy Burham just seems to be glory hunting, i would just like a Prime minister to last their term and run the country without ego getting in the way.

Fallbuy · 22/06/2026 08:59

I’m inclined to say the media are just following public opinion, and public opinion is led by ill-informed morons with no critical thinking skills and the attention span of a two year old.
