AIBU to feel the media is pushing Starmer out?

To feel the media is forcing Starmer out and to be annoyed by this.

They need constant drama and content and this is done at the expense of the country. Starmer is boring but things are improving despite major problems like Iran in the background.

If this were 20 years ago he’d have been safe. They are treating government like football clubs and want Burnham as they think he’s more showbiz. These foreign owner media outlets don’t care about the stability of this country, they just want headlines and drama on X to drum up more drama for headlines and opinion pieces where the media all interview each other.

The country is becoming ungovernable because them and I’m sick of it.

What could Starmer have done that he didn't do? Like he's a smart man, labour have smart people why didn't they just do what was needed.

Labour have smart people? You must be looking at a different front bench to the one I've seen.

Because of the media.

That is ridiculously naive. I'm sure there's going to be plenty more delusional posts before the day is out.

Because of the media.

Labour blaming the media or the last gov at every turn are part of why he’s gone.

Homelanders · 22/06/2026 10:00

Why can't we just have a PM stick through a term despite how good or bad it seems.

I don't understand what Burnham will do differently?

Tax. Tax and more tax…

Yes it’s his own party that wants him out.

Because of the media.

NeedWineNow · 22/06/2026 09:58

I'm surprised he's lasted this long to be honest. I said to DH before the last GE that Starmer would get them into Government and there would be a leadership contest 6-12 months in. I thought it would be Rayner who took over.

So here we are, yet another PM to come and who knows what the new person will bring to the table. Hopefully it will mean Lammy, Reeves and Milliband as far away from the Cabinet as they could be which will be a start.

I’m hating this media glee. It makes me want to puke!🤮

Don’t worry, that’ll soon be sorted. Your Government intends making social media companies prioritise BBC output over other news. Which of course is famously unbiased and never manipulates anything via editing. But only after it’s restricted your access to the rest of the world by banning VPNs 😂

Can you point me to where the government is planning this as of be interested to read it.

He’s the worst prime minister with the worst ratings and the worst record…. But this shit show party is just going to get worse.

Is this backed up by any stats? If like to see them if so.

Most parties lose seats within their first couple of years as they can't do everything they promised.

Additup · 22/06/2026 09:55

He's gone 😔

LuckyHazelFox · 22/06/2026 09:49

You only expect favourable coverage?

No but calling him a lame duck before he’s even become PM is setting out their stall for how they are planning to destroy him.

I’m not particularly an Andy Burnham fan but I fail to see how they can be so sure he will fail.

Of course they could just be sure because no one can effectively govern back to growth a post Brexit Britain.

I expect fair coverage.

Great, so we can expect fair coverage to be given to all parties.

This.

we seem to be in a cycle where we vote in a party and a leader, then almost immediately decide they’re doing a shit job - only we can’t have a general election so the calls are for the leader to resign.

we elect a leader. Personally I think leader swapping every year is as damaging as it would be to have a GE every year. The leader should stay as our elected prime minister, unless in exceptional circumstances .

we’ve had too many unelected prime ministers recently. Whatever you think of KS he was elected - and he’s not doing such an enormously terrible job he needs to go immediately.

Yes, a carousel of unelected leaders is the sign of the kind of state that gets invaded 'for its own good' by global powers while others refuse to condemn the invasion because 'it's complex'.

We are only spared because of geography and historical (white) supremacy.

We are just like 'them'.

Its not just the media many of his fellow minsiters and party members appear to have lost their faith in him.

I don't think they've lost their faith in him. I think they realise that the media are determined to oust him and that his position is untenable.

Quite frankly it's disgusting behaviour on the part of the media. The BBC, which is supposed to be impartial, has been as bad as the right wing press.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 22/06/2026 09:53

Givemeachaitealatte · 22/06/2026 09:44

I cannot believe people can't see the manipulation that social and other forms of media are actively doing. It's anti democracy, people are seeing sound bites and algorithms that feed them biased information and mainly misinformation a lot of the time.

Public opinion is shaped by what they are fed, and it's a constant bombardment of how awful Keir Starmer and Labour are. It's scary how it's happened.

Not sure blaming the media has much mileage when you preside over devastatingly bad local election results and your own party decides to axe you.

Starmer had the opportunity to do better and failed on multiple counts. Labour MPS have been sold on the fact that Burnham will be better and will give them a chance of winning the next election (no doubt of course that some people will think the MPS were fooled by the media too).

I think you'd also have a hard time making a case for the media influicing our choice of diplomats.

I absolutely agree with you.

The Murdoch owned media will not be happy until Reform are in government so they stir and stir and stir.

After Gordon Brown lost power I went to see him speak. He simply said "I couldn't fight them". It was very sad, and this is coming from someone who has never voted Labour in her life.

He couldn't fight them anymore! The weakness of the Labour Party, summed up in one sentence.

Well, exactly. The instability of a merry go round of prime ministers is bad enough but the prospect of his replacement is horrendous.

Watching with interest who the new chancellor will be. Probably just as well Reeves won't survive because she always looks miserably drained.

Starmer pushed himself. Glad he's gone and taken his two tier shit legacy with him. I'm not holding out any hope for his replacement.
