AIBU to feel the media is pushing Starmer out?

To feel the media is forcing Starmer out and to be annoyed by this.

They need constant drama and content and this is done at the expense of the country. Starmer is boring but things are improving despite major problems like Iran in the background.

If this were 20 years ago he’d have been safe. They are treating government like football clubs and want Burnham as they think he’s more showbiz. These foreign owner media outlets don’t care about the stability of this country, they just want headlines and drama on X to drum up more drama for headlines and opinion pieces where the media all interview each other.

The country is becoming ungovernable because them and I’m sick of it.

I suppose at least Starmer has been allowed to deliver his resignation speech without a big mouthed heckler in the background. The only thing he could have got right during his term would have been to call a GE.

Am I reading correctly? We should have left Starmer to finish his term, just to be fair and equal?

We should have left Starmer to finish his term for the good of the country.

I'd rather have we stuck with rishi sunak

Where's the biscuit emoji when you need it

Was referring to Labour frontbenchers NOT Starmer.

He got voted out in the General Election and then resigned so that was never a possibility.

I wish the people had chosen to vote Tory.....

It's ridiculous and damaging.

The Daily Mail had articles for weeks before the last budget saying Reeves is coming for YOUR money, the average working person will be X thousands a year worse off, she's coming for pensioners, she's coming for business owners, she's going to break manifesto promises and put up taxes and then when the budget wasn't particularly significant they just moved to something else about what Labour were allegedly going to do.

And now, after complaining about Starmer before and since the election they're frothing at the mouth about what Burnham the communist is going to do i.e Take your money!!

They feed the electorate anxiety-provoking BS then sit back rubbing their hands with glee at chaos in the Labour party and will do the same with Burnham.

We can't as a nation, just support sacking a Prime Minister when they aren't doing everything that pleases everyone and not quick enough.

It just leads to instability for the country and its citizens.

Exactly this. And now the whole Cabinet will change again, which creates more instability, and people who are actually pretty competent at their jobs will get ditched in favour of people who don't know what they're doing. No wonder nothing ever gets done in the country. We've had 10 years of this ridiculous revolving door scenario now.

Can and have.

I suppose there is an argument that something miraculous would occur shortly that would change the countries economic situation.

Possible that it would. Events happen. Look at Covid.

But his own party decided that the trajectory wasn't looking good and something needed to be done. Which is a fair indication that nobody in it had any confidence that there was going to be an amazing turnaround and it was worth throwing the dice with someone else.

He had his chance and neither the public nor his own party were happy with what was going on.

You could make the same arguments about not having a full term (or indeed any reasonable time) about Truss.

All of the stats were showing slow and steady growth and improvement. More than in the last 10 years of Tories. Why can they not just be left to finish so we can give them all the same chance?
Why are people so keen to destabilise democracy and elections?

Whoever is installed as leader will suffer the same fate. This is about the media's thirst for rolling 24 hour news to compete with social media. Anyone who thinks Burnham stands a chance once he's PM is deluded.

StabiaGirl · 22/06/2026 10:28

GasPanic · 22/06/2026 10:27

Reeves has been awful.

But I am not confident that her replacement is going to be any less awful.

I think we can safely assume that her replacement will be considerably more awful.

GasPanic · 22/06/2026 10:27

StabiaGirl · 22/06/2026 10:23

Yes OK. If you'd read my previous comments you would know I was not talking about Starmer. And they may be educated but the lack of reasoning ability of current Cabinet ministers is astounding, including Reeves.

blackpooolrock · 22/06/2026 10:26

Starmer was an awful leader. The only thing i can see labour have done since they got in is raise taxes on many different things making us all poorer.

Labour don't support the working classes now.

As for brexit, don't make me laugh. There are many things which could have been done differently to make the UK more attractive but the establishment didn't want that so have made it difficult at every turn.

Politics is corrupt now no matter who is in charge. They all have their noses in the trough.

Any change of leader should trigger a general election. It's incomprehensible to have a PM that the electorate haven't voted in.

We don’t have a presidential system; and we don’t vote for Prime Ministers but for individual MPs. If we had a general election after each change of Prime Minister, the Tory years would have been far shorter.

Starmer is front bench. The others in cabinet are well educated with degrees from Oxbridge and other top unis. Rachel Reeves has a masters in economics and worked in the bank of England

You can't say that when he hasn't had a full term though.
He will never be someone who "didn't do his job" because he wasn't given full time.

Can and have.

Batsratscatsgnats · 22/06/2026 10:21

Andy Burnham is a hideous snake. He will absolutely lose Labour the next election. WHO is going to vote for him? Londoners wont because his whole popularity is based on moving wealth from London to the North and fighting the 'Westminster elite'.
The North wont vote for him because he wont actually DO that because he'll BE the Westminster elite. Will the people of Manchester vote for him when he's dumped his mayoral job - the best job in British politics!?! - leaving them with a massive bill to hold another mayoral election? And the SW? Well he hasn't even mentioned them as far as I can remember, Scotland. Wales, NI?
Screw him.

Wipeywipey · 22/06/2026 10:20

Don't forget the whole Trans issue is coming with Burnham. Back to 2018 we go on a Labour version of the Tory Magic Roundabout of PM's no one voted for.

Mangelwurzelfortea · 22/06/2026 10:19

GasPanic · 22/06/2026 10:14

Looking back on it, the reason Starmer has been unsuccessful is mostly due to the 2024 general election.

He made a series of promises that he didn't need to in order to beat the Tories, who were in an incredibly bad state. That may have led to a thumping majority, but he would have been far better off having a smaller majority and more policy flexibility.

If he hadn't promised not to raise taxes he would have been in a much better position. In doing so he just committed the country to the same old old.

This is probably at the root of the poor local election performance, which really is what is driving his exit. Other events along the way are just the straws breaking the camels back.

Partly that and partly because the media has absolutely slated him endlessly, without ever giving him a chance, with all the Two Tier Kier bullshit.

Burnham won't fare any better, and the media will make a big deal of the PM being chosen by one constituency in Manchester - effectively deciding the fate of the whole nation. Plus he's more left-leaning which nobody outside the Labour membership actually wants. Paving the way for a Conservative/Reform victory at the next GE.

Yeah it's a total shitshow. I'm a Labour supporter, but I am done with activism now. They're all bloody idiots. I'm just going to focus on my kids, writing and garden instead!

And totally this!

SomersetBrie · 22/06/2026 10:18

I think, judging by this thread, and by other comments I have read lately, that people are definitely more interested in "having a say" - get Starmer out! - than what is actually good for the country. The country is quite far down most people's lists in reality.
I wish Starmer well, in a career far away from politics now I hope, and I also hope Burnham's team are ready for the shit that the media (and the people) will be throwing at him from the second he takes over.
