To still expect neighbours to sort it?

My neighbours have a dog that barks at regular intervals through the day. No longer than ten minutes goes past without her barking. She sits in the window and is triggered very easily by anything that goes by. It drives the owners mad because the man and woman shout at the dog and then the woman ends up screaming at her too. They're always in and the dog barks when they're home. If they go out it tends to be silent after a few barks. I was due to send council logs to the environmental noise team today.

Things have been frosty for ages but the other day we finally got talking. I was invited in and the dog barked at me non stop for half an hour. It didnt take a breath. I also found out during that visit that the woman has cancer and the man has heart problems. Really sad. He also takes shopping round daily for his MIL who is elderly and frail. The woman also said the dog loves to sit in the window watching the world go by (where it barks at everything and nothing). Female neighbour also said dog is untrainable now. We left on a good note. This.was friday. Yesterday I was out all day but there was some barking in the evening. Its fine, I dont expect silence. Today is a different matter. Since my weekend visitors have left, the dog has been barking a lot. They always quieten it down when I have visitors.

I cannot go on like this though. I pay a shitload for the property and can't watch TV, read, relax in the garden or eat a single meal without it being interrupted by the damn dog barking. My mental health is on the floor to the point I've almost quit my job and I've gone on antidepressants.

Today I saw male neighbour out and asked in a very friendly way if they've done any training with the dog (I've been there a year and the dog has always barked but lately its just awful). He said no because of their health and his MIL but that he'd start this week. I did say that my compromise is that I don't mind some barking, after all its what a dog does but they need to meet half way and offered to get some dog training resources if needed. I also said i really didn't want to take this further with the council and appreciate anything they can do, but I reportedto the council mid may and nothing has yet been done by them. I was really upbeat and friendly but he was obviously pissed off.

Aibu to expect them to train the dog in light of their health?

So tonight the dog was barking again and as I was getting frustrated hearing the barking yet again, decided to go up to bed. The dog then woke me up three times. I've been up since 4.30am for work and so spoke to next door neighbour on his way back from the pub.

He told me his other dog had died tonight just before he went to the pub as the reason for dog barking. I offered my sincere condolences and told him that the council have said that the dog barking is a noise nuisance but I'd like to give them opportunity to keep the dog quiet before I officially go down that route (council officer was talking about court, but I didnt tell neighbour that). I also told him how it was affecting my day to day life, that I couldn't work because the dog barking was so frequently and that it was very much affecting my mental health.

I also mentioned that the dog sits in the window everyday and barks at everything and anything, including me going out and coming home and pottering in the garden and he agreed with this. I then suggested restricting the dogs access to the window, but he didn't say anything to that. It seemed as if he hadn't even thought about taking away the access to stop her barking so much.

Now the part that pissed me off the most was he'd said he'd be looking into starting training after I collared him out and about last week. He was very non committal when he said this, it was probably to shut me up, but tonight he said that with everything going on, he hadn't yet had chance. I dont think they have any intentions of training the dog and so this is where it pisses me off because theyre perfectly happy for me to have to listen to that barking day after day. They dont give a shit, do they?

I do feel for them losing their other dog but I also feel its another excuse not to train their barker. The council also said as part of their investigations they need to ask how long the neighbours will need to implement training and I said whats the time limit on getting that started and the council officer said its up to the neighbours. This could be going on for many more months. I'm fucked!

Plot twist, the other dog is still alive! It's madness. The other dog has just been barking outside at 03.45am, which is a rarity, so perhaps its not well, but I looked out of my window having been awakened by the barking and there the dog was, sitting out of the back garden. He told me it had died just before he left for the pub yesterday!

Our neighbours dog barks

but we can’t hear it indoors and rarely in the back garden as it like to bark round the front of the house

have you got poor soundproofing in general ?

Yes, I can hear them sneeze and pierce the film on their ready meals!

Hi, just an update on the situation.

Someone from the council called earlier who said that what I've reported is a statutory nuisance due to the frequency of the barking, but that they have to give them time to implement training. I asked how long they will give them and they said they'd ask the neighbours to give them a time of when they'll be training the dog. I said what if it takes months and said I'd had almost a year of the barking already. If they were going to be implementing the training they would have a long time ago. He also said him and a dog warden will be visiting the neighbours.

Why should it be my problem? I didnt choose to get the dog, nor does it belong to me. Its 100% their responsibility to make sure the dog isn't a noise nuisance and that starts and ends with them.

But is it your problem. Not your fault, your problem, because here you are annoyed and fed up.

You can’t actually make people do anything, unfortunately.

Chefpig · 26/06/2026 14:18

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 25/06/2026 08:15

No, I know it doesn’t justify it. I was making a suggestion as to why you had a quiet day. It was unlikely to be them ‘keeping it quiet’ as they haven’t bothered before or after.

We worked hard on our dog, and he continued to be an absolute pest. What worked for us in the end was window film on the window that he offended at!

It’s possible they’ve convinced themselves s/he likes looking out of the window, because they’ve had no success at stopping it. Window film is a good solution. It may be worth trying to have another civilised conversation like the first one you had, and suggest the window film.

Like it or lump it, this is a mutual problem.

It doesnt make the barking right though even if it is protecting its owners from danger. It should be trained adequately and the access to see the 'dangers' removed from the dogs sight.

I am also not walking a dog whose owners can't be arsed to be decent neighbours. Its up to them to take care of their own pet in whatever way they can. I have my own pets who I love and take care of by providing for all their needs despite ill health myself. If I was unable to do this I'd hire someone in to do that rather than let them suffer.

Its not protecting the owners from.danger though is it. It's bored shitless. The owners wouldnt react at 3am as they'll assume its barking at a passing car/person.

My dog barks when it detects someone inside the perimeter....
Not passing.

Hes woke me up twice when police arrived 9hrs after a call and im a marked house.

He doesnt bark when the postman arrives and puts my mail in the box at the end of my drive. He will bark if an unfamiliar courier who cant read the sign on the gate or sees the huge parcel box saunters up tje drive. He wont bite unless he thinks im in distress, jjst dances around them

Perhaps you should offer to help out a bit yourself.

Erm why??????

Princessbanana · 25/06/2026 23:49

Just buy a bark collar for it, it's called pet safe bark collar, money well spent

Chihuahua barks are getting that frustrating for you? They squeak and quack, usually, rather than a decent bark.

It’s possible they were out the day the dog was quiet. Dogs tend to bark because they are defending their owner from all the dangerous passers by.

Why should she take responsibility for someone else's pet?

Sherararara · 25/06/2026 07:14

Their health and other issues are irrelevant. You’ve been more than reasonable. Take it all the way with the council as far as you can as soon as you can.

There's your answer.

The dog is bored and full of repressed energy.

Have you thought about offering to walk it for them?

So a neighbiurs dog barking and the solution is other neighbours have to spend their time fixing the problem?

Honestly I don’t understand people who take on pets that actively make their lives worse. Like, it’s not mandatory. You can actually just….not have a dog that barks at you all day.

Some people really don't seem to understand that not having a dog is a valid, legitimate and indeed wise long term option.

I worked full time and don't have the time to help them. He manages to get out and about daily and to the pub so he could easily take the dog for a walk or two a day.

Have them try an ultrasonic barking device. You can buy them on Amazon pretty cheaply. You can get a box that just automatically goes off when they bark, or you can get a handheld one that you use manually when the dog barks.

Gardenisablooming · 24/06/2026 22:01

Go ahead with get council complaints.
They will fit recording devices. I know a couple who were made to rehome their yappy fucker..they were warned.
I had success recently with playing loud music at the point I hear ndn lock his ddog out...I reported to the council but he lapsed a bit..things spot on these days though.

The dog has been barking at things passing by the window all morning. It's been madness. When I spoke to the neighbours she proudly declared that the little princess dog loves sitting in the window. What the actual fuck? At the expense of my sanity?

Can you contact the RSPCA for advice? The dog is being locked in a house all day with zero walks and is barking out of stress. Their treatment of it is cruel. I don't know what the RSPCA can do, but it's worth an approach. Use these details.
