AIBU to object to my partner wearing his late father's underwear?

As the title says, am I being unreasonable to object to my partner wearing his (late) father's underwear?

His father died a few years ago, and his mother gave him lots of quite nice clothes of his father's to have. I recently discovered that he'd also inherited his father's underwear which he is now wearing! He claims it has been washed countless times and is in good condition, so he doesn't get why I would object. But, I do....! Would you??

There are people the world over who would be grateful for secondhand pants. I also think boxer type pants are less of a problem than tighty whities or more close-fitting women’s pants. As for people saying they wouldn’t want secondhand sheets, do they never stay away from home?

Gateappreciation · 20/06/2026 18:23

Ick.

Secretseverywhere · 20/06/2026 18:22

I would object too. It’s possibly irrational I buy everything second hand from vinted. Shoes, clothes, coats so am a big reusing fan. I buy new underwear though and swimming costumes. Essentially if it’s supposed to sit against your naked crotch then I’ll buy new. I think everyone has their own line though as lots wouldn’t wear second hand at all.

Kokonimater · 20/06/2026 18:21

It really doesn’t matter. Makes sense to me

It is a bit strange. I went on holiday a few years ago and one of my friends brought two of her dead grandmas swimming costumes to wear. I found it rather odd.

I can see why that would be odd if she died by drowning.....

I think playing dress up in the clothes of anyone you know who is sadly deceased is a tad odd let alone underwear.

Have you ever been bereaved?

But to play devil's advocate, Dead trousers, shirts would be fine just not dead pants, so it isn't about the Dead part, but the pants part, surely?

three words - dead dad's dong

shellyleppard · 20/06/2026 18:13

My dad gave me my mum's new knickers when she died a few years ago.....i just couldn't wear them!!

Tableforjoan · 20/06/2026 18:13

QuaintBeaker · 20/06/2026 18:07

His dad's actual penis has been rubbing all over them.

Yeah I don’t want to wear things other peoples fannies would have been all over. I’d rather go commando.

It will be different aspect that would bother different people, surely?

For someone its the underwear aspect, for someone the dead person aspect, for someone the Father/ FIL aspect, while others wont see a problem at all.

I guess guys view underwear a bit different to us women.

So presumably hotels are out of the question…

Yellowpapersun · 20/06/2026 17:54

I think it's a bit weird and can't imagine wearing anyone else's knickers, whether they were dead or alive.
However, I know a worse example. My friend's Godmother wore her dead dad's baggy drawers with the fly sewn up.

Waitingfordoggo · 20/06/2026 17:52

MrsOni · 20/06/2026 17:09

Because it's someone else's pants?

Because they are pants worn by his dad?

Because they are pants formally belonging to a dead person?

Any one of those 3 is enough to give me the ick, let alone all 3.

Edited

‘Formally belonging to a dead person’ is a weird objection. I wear socks and a hoodie that belonged to my mum and dad respectively, both now dead. They weren’t wearing these specific clothes when they died if that helps?

corblimeygvnr · 20/06/2026 17:11

Yes 🤢

You've never stayed in a hotel then?

Happyjoe · 20/06/2026 17:49

No, I'd hate it, pants, no! My partner uses his dad's bathrobe, his late dad's bathrobe and I hate that. Can't explain why because I have a cardigan of my late mums.

No logic in any of it, it's emotions.

Well anyone would borrow a jumper or a jacket from their dad while he was alive but never his underwear. So same when dead.
I have sisters. We swop clothes, borrow, give away etc but never knickers. That's a step too far. Even the fact you can't return underwear after you try it on and remove the protective sticker.

Even the fact you can't return underwear after you try it on and remove the protective sticker.

Isn't that mainly because people wouldn't bother to wash underwear before returning it - as washing it implies having properly worn it (so they can no longer sell it as new) and thus they will refuse the return?

It's not comparable to underwear that belonged to a family member and has been obviously used but thoroughly washed.

AgnesX · 20/06/2026 17:45

As much as I loved my mother I wouldn't wear her underwear especially her knickers. I'm not sure why as I was used to wearing hand me downs growing up. Change in the times I suppose, they now seem like very personal garments.

PS YANBU

Negroany · 20/06/2026 17:44

I wouldn't wear any pre used underwear, nothing to do with whose it was.

Better to rip up and pass to charity shop that takes "rags" as it can still be reused, usually shredded for stuffing or something. Check first as not many places do take it.

CoCoJones26 · 20/06/2026 17:44

Noooo! That's too weird. I'm generally happy to wear anything second hand but pants are just wrong!
