AIBU to object to my partner wearing his late father's underwear?

As the title says, am I being unreasonable to object to my partner wearing his (late) father's underwear?

His father died a few years ago, and his mother gave him lots of quite nice clothes of his father's to have. I recently discovered that he'd also inherited his father's underwear which he is now wearing! He claims it has been washed countless times and is in good condition, so he doesn't get why I would object. But, I do....! Would you??

Unless you are secretly wanting to wear them yourself then I cannot find any reasonable objection. 😂
Why is it worrying you?
I personally would not wear cast off underwear, but would not be concerned at all if others did.

I’m guessing she’s still alive tho so that makes it less weird I’d say?

But she too will be dead at some stage in the next 100 years! We're mostly talking here about re-using pants where the previous owner was still alive when they last wore them, so what's the real difference?!

AWeeCupOfTeaAndAnIndividualFruitTrifle · 25/06/2026 08:01

My SIL isn't a MNer, but she would doubtless chime far more with the MN hive mind than me.

When her children were very tiny, whenever they had any 'code brown' accidents in their pants, she would clean them up but bag up and throw the pants away in the bin, rather than washing them.

Then again, we used re-usable nappies for our DS - so we were well used to the concept of potentially pooey clothes going into the washing machine; although they always came out lovely and clean... because our washing machine worked as standard.

Ahem. It might seem quite reasonable to wear someone’s used (but clean) pants but in practice I have seen how underwear wears differently in the - ahem - gusset area.
Specifically, the area can discolour over time and, while still clean, can take on a somewhat yellow-ish hue. To be fair women’s pants can also discolour but perhaps not to the same extent.
So it’s not unreasonable that people might find this off putting…
Apologies if TMI.

I don't know about OP's case, but a large proportion of commonly-worn men's pants don't really have a gusset at all. It's just effectively a curtain of fabric that shields the free-dangling dangly bits, with a bifurcation some distance below them.

Not really.

I was recently wearing and binning pants because the heaviness of menopausal bleeding, the size of the clots, blood through tampons, pads, knickers and trousers in one gush...
Mum had a clearout and gave me a load of her old pants.

They were clean.

I’m guessing she’s still alive tho so that makes it less weird I’d say?

Youhavereachedyourdestination · 22/06/2026 07:52

For me it’s because it’s the clothing on my husband immediately cradling his cock and bollocks and is the item of clothing I pull off him to have sex.

It doesn’t matter that they’re clean. I don’t want to be faced with his dad’s pants when I’m feeling frisky- obviously. What about if he wore his mum’s pants, I mean it’s all just fabric and it’s clean isn’t it? What does it matter?

It matters because they are a couple and underwear is an intimate thing. If the marriage is sexless and platonic, well crack on wearing dead relatives undercrackers I guess.

I prefer knowing that my husband’s pants have only housed his bollocks and no one else’s thanks.

Haha yes, to be fair that would be odd. I don't have a partner to contend with.
I'd find it weird if my Mums old pants turned him on 🤣

I wear some of my mums jewellery and me and my sister have some of her handbags and accessories but definately not knickers and bras’s that is beyond weird!

Spot-on @AWeeCupOfTeaAndAnIndividualFruitTrifle- it’s illogical! To be fair, a couple of posters have acknowledged that it isn’t logical but that they just don’t like the thought of it.

But many don’t seem to realise that there is no difference between using cutlery/sheets/towels in a hotel or hospital, and wearing laundered underwear that someone else has worn. Can’t imagine how horrified they’d be that I used second hand cloth nappies for my first DC (I wanted to try different brands to see which suited our DC best before buying a load of new ones.) I await now some posts telling me that was disgusting and feeling sorry for my poor baby 😂 I did eventually treat her to some brand new ones once I’d found out which brands were good.

Totally agree with you. The days of wearing hand me down knickers from family members will appall the ones who didn't have to live this as normal. Guess what, we never caught any diseases, thay were boil washed in higher temperatures than a washing machine cycle now.

Allonthesametrain · 24/06/2026 22:20

Well if it makes him happy, what's the problem? At the age now when DH and DS mix up their underwear, what's the difference?

Please stop being so hard on him, let him do it.

cornflakecrunchie · 24/06/2026 13:47

That would give me serious ick..

The only thing reassuring here is that rudely speaking is his fathers balls and willy once in there. But other than that I am very peculiar about underwear.....it is like I am sleeping with his father

DugnuttEyeBoogies · 22/06/2026 21:40

Overworkedandknackered · 21/06/2026 12:25

Aye but those towels will have been boil washed and probably haven’t been right up inside the crack of a someone else’s arse.

Having worked in hospitality, I can assure you those towels will have seen and done some things that would make you scream …… 😂

toiletpaperthief · 22/06/2026 21:36

Gross. Why would you wear someone elses underwear?

Have you thought of taking them to Pantiques Roadshow?

Excellent

whyohwhyisitalwayswet · 22/06/2026 08:45

Yeah, that's where I landed on this. Strange but not going to overthink it! My passing thought that it was odd (and consequent post) has spurred a lot of strong views on MN, some even suggesting I rethink my entire relationship 😂.

hahaha! Typical MN conversation with so much drama for no reason 😂😂

Skyflier · 22/06/2026 11:33

I mean in theory it should be fine but something about him wearing his dead father’s undercrackers is a bit icky!

As long as he respects your request he doesn’t wear when seeing you… all good 🤷‍♀️

whyohwhyisitalwayswet · 22/06/2026 08:45

abbynabby23 · 22/06/2026 08:41

I would find it equally strange but let’s be honest guys don’t overthink 😂

I mean, I wouldnt want my parents underwear whether they were alive or dead, or anyone else's for that matter but I have put YABU because if my husband wore his father's underwear then I wouldnt object, its surely a purely personal decision, its not me thats wearing them!!

Fallbuy · 22/06/2026 08:23

I still wear my great grandmother’s bloomers, just as my grandmother and my mother did before me.

ViciousCurrentBun · 22/06/2026 08:18

To quote Paul Calf in Paul and Pauline Calf’s Video Diaries ‘I’m not wearing dead man’s pants’.

One of the worst things I have ever witnessed was the departmental cricket box, passed from one player to another. I knew future DH was a gent when he declined it as had his own.

Waitingfordoggo · 22/06/2026 08:03

Fair enough @Youhavereachedyourdestination- like I said, for some people it’s the thought of it. That’s a valid reason not to like it. No one has to justify why they don’t like the idea.🤷🏼‍♀️ But the posts suggesting there is some sort of hygiene issue are incorrect IMO.
