Did my DH’s comments to a stranger cross the line?

Local retail park - there’s a gym by the car park. Walking back to the car earlier, DH makes conversation with a man (early/mid 20’s I guess) and says he’s in good shape (he had a vest on and was muscly) and that he wouldn’t trust him around me. Jokey tone, the guy laughed. He then said ‘she’d eat you alive, son. She’d probably teach you a thing or two’, again he laughed and we carried on walking.

DH is a bit of a cheeky chappy and always makes conversation with strangers, but I felt this was a bit off.

Sounds like he was jealous of the muscly young man, tbh. Calling him "son" and making out that he was so clueless that his wife would make mincemeat of him and teach him a thing or two. I really think this is the male version of when a woman gets jealous of a beautiful woman.

Agree! Your husband sounds insecure and threatened by hot young men!

The older I get the less I can stand “cheeky chappies”. Usually because it’s code for “unfunny bellend with shit banter”. This example proves my point.

😂

Very awkward but then I absolutely detest "cheeky chappies" 😬 sorry

Me too

aurynne · 20/06/2026 17:17

Are you sure your DH is not secretly gay?

It’s not my humour at all and I’d be very embarrassed if I was with him. It was supposed to be a weird compliment towards you (that he wouldn’t trust the man to not want to have sex with you, and that you are good at sex so could teach him things) but I think talking to random men about them having sex with his wife is very weird and objectifying of your DH. Why can’t he just say the man looks fit and leave it at that? Is he insecure about something?

sittingonabeach · 20/06/2026 17:09

So grim.

TofuTuesday · 20/06/2026 17:07

So your dh just randomly compliments a man ‘oh you look great. I wouldn’t trust you near my wife’ the man laughs. Your dh says ‘son, she’d eat you alive and teach you a thing or two.’
what a weird world.

I agree with your analysis, but I think a better analogy would be male gorillas scrapping for supremacy. 🤮 Women don’t behave like this.

Oh come come. Women do compete with other women, get bealous of other women, make catty comments and possessive about their partners, sure it’s not identical but it’s the female version, let’s not pretend otherwise

Are any of these weird conversations actually true? We’ve had the waiter one, the builder one, I have never met anyone who talks like this.

There's one in the pub we used to go to. The chippy got a new, young woman and it was jokes about his battered sausage, until one of the other men shut him down. We are older and a lot of the drinkers have gone onto alcohol free Guinness, prompting comments about "it'd be like reading porn". He comes out with these things in shops, the street. One time in the shop a younger man asked him if he wasn't getting any, because he seems obsessed, but it hasn't stopped him. They are the embarrassing pervy uncles of yesteryear.
OP, tell him to leave you out of it, before you are looked at with pity.

This is a dick move, you know full well they meant as well.

Bristolandlazy · 20/06/2026 17:01

Is he implying you're not to be trusted or that this man looked like a rapist? I don't find either version funny, both are insulting. I hope this didn't really happen, if it did your husband should stay away from the general public as he can't be trusted not to make inappropriate "jokes".

Thebigonesgetaway · 20/06/2026 16:58

How icky. I am assuming you’re both swingers or he wishes to be.

So do I. I find them very juvenile and boring. They try to make themselves liked at everyone else's expense. Tedious thick idiots.

No matter what you say to DH, you'll be blowing it out of proportion, he was only joking, it was a joke, my god woman are you still going on about it, I didnt mean anything, cant you handle a joke....

Hes a dick, you'll not get anywhere but you need to correct him.

Does he always find he has to fill the silence, by making derogatory comments about his wife to strangers?

So what did you say?

I didn’t want to make a scene in front of the poor lad but once we walked on I tore a strip off him.

You’ve known and been married to this man for what, years? and he has never said anything like this, yet suddenly today, out of nowhere, he comes out with that comment?

He’s said some close to the edge things before, but never in reference to me.

I don't understand why some posters think the OP is lying?

notanothernamesurely · 20/06/2026 16:50

Your husband said ‘she’d eat you alive’ to a stranger …. About you?!
