I need a rant about millennials

Okay, I may offend millennials but hear me out (and please, millennials, offer me an explanation as to why your generation do this)...I've just had a discussion with a millennial on a thread for a social media post showing the Tartan Army having a blast in Boston, her comment was about how it was "healing the millennials". I replied saying it's lovely for all generations to watch given how divisive the world is, and she said due to 9/11 millennials crave the world healing more. I get this a lot with millennials - like they think every cultural experience is about them or for them - even taking things that are from other generations and claiming it as their era - and they act like no other generation has had any big events to deal with. I argued the Lost Generation (world war) and Gen Z (being children/early adults when the whole world stopped) have had it worse out of all the living generations (in my opinion).

For context, I'm a British Gen X, also I have a lot of close millennial friends so it's not personal, it's about them as a collective. Also, this person was American - I think maybe the American nationalism adds to it (more so than with Brits of this generation).

The only people who would legitimately be saying they're particularly impacted by 9/11 would be Americans and Afghans...theres a whole other world out there with their own challenges and hapennings and I'm pretty sure 9/11 don't appear high in their list, tragic as it was.
Also this labelling of anyone round the globe from the same year range sounds a bit like astrology. Sure geopolitics of the times impact everyone and there are broad issues like climate change etc but saying every whatever x gen is a snowflake, like any other broad brush labelling, is silly at best discriminatory at worst.

YourBlueShark · 22/06/2026 17:07

American Millennial (and local to Boston) - I haven't heard anyone say this nor do I think it myself.

Millennial here - I've never heard anyone use 9/11 as a reason or excuse. Is this more of a thing in the U.S. or something?

No idea. I'm American and I've never heard this. FWIW, the largest generational group to die in 9/11 were Boomers.

Can't say I've noticed this but then, I am not the sort of person who lumps people into labelled groups. This country suffers from too much (largely made up) division - please can I ask that you contain your hobby to the 'Let's bleat about how awful (insert preferred generation here) are' to reddit. Alternatively, you could try generally broadening your horizons.
People are not lumpen masses.

The eldest GenZ is 30!

Thank you. My gen z DD is nearly 29 remembers dial up internet and is laden herself with student debt to gain a nursing degree which the final year in my opinion she should be given a refund for as she stepped up as a nightingale nurse.
But who would pay for that refund her great grandchildren if the future exists?

Gen X has the AIDS crisis

Huh? I'm a Boomer - still paying rent by the way - and remember the Aids crisis well. Still around as well.

All this trying to fit people into pigeon holes by giving it labels does us no good.

Nobody is claiming the AIDS crisis was exclusively experienced by Gen X. Unlike certain Millennials claiming to have been the only generation to live through the development of the Internet.

Wingingit73 · 21/06/2026 08:05

Im gen x. What are you talking about? This just didnt make sense?

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 21/06/2026 07:11

It's a good job this person did not live through the the decades when there was a genuine threat of a Nuclear War.

She wouldn't have lasted five minutes.

Do these people ever have any type of enjoyment or happiness?. As they say Misery loves Company. Lets get upset on somebody else's behalf.

SweetnsourNZ · 21/06/2026 05:05

Maybe it sounded weird to you, but I suppose every generation has it's challenges and instead of this war of words between us maybe we should start listening to each other. As a generation Xer I remember the cold war and anxiety about the world ending in a nuclear explosion. The older generation who had already been through WW2 would probably have thought we were neurotic.

garlictwist · 21/06/2026 04:54

Surely most millennials were teenagers for 9/11 and won’t have been massively impacted, in the uk at least.

There is a theme on social about “Millenials living through another disaster” but your friend sounds like a self absorbed pillock.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 21/06/2026 02:50

I had to vote YANBU just because what your friend said sounds so annoying!

I don’t have any experience of millennials in generals acting in this way personally but it would have irritated me.

What the hell is generation X & Z??
obv millennials is year 2000… but 2000 til when?
How did 9/11 affect them more than older generations? I mean they were too young to even remember it happening!! The only millennials 9/11 affected are surely the ones loosing a parent in the attack? Older gens actually lived through the horror!

Millennial aren't those born in 2000, but those coming of age around the turn of the millennium (with a fairly generous margin for 'around').

Lovethystupidneighbour · 21/06/2026 01:45

Honestly the only thing I’m pissed about is the fact that it feels impossible getting on the property ladder/stagnating wages vs house prices etc. I’m sure every generation had a difficulty though.

Other than that, I’m grateful we weren’t around during the world wars, and I’m grateful I’m not growing up in this new world.

I’m not sure millennials claim things that happened to other generations but just that they span a lot of lived experience.

I was 16 when 9/11 happened and my husband (also 16) joined the army 1 week earlier so this echoes widely in my memory and the implications of the following fall out (war) for us. There were 3 at war in Afghanistan on the same street in a small rural town - only my husband wasn’t sent home shot. However it is no exaggeration that his nerves (as the old people would say) are shot to this day.

I remember the troubles in Ireland / Northern Ireland as my cousin served in the British army in the height / a particularly troublesome period and my husband then also served.

Conversely I can sing lots of British wartime songs because my grandfathers served in ww2 (we are all late reproducers).

I finished uni at the height of the 2008 financial crisis.

I cared for an immuno compromised disabled friend (she needs carers and so it wasn’t safe) and shielded in the pandemic. Also home school (oh joy).

I feel we genuinely live our lives anticipating the next disaster.

It is claiming or making things about themselves. It’s just a shared long term oral history / lived experience.

I am an older millenial and didn’t really access the internet to age 12. So not sure if this makes any difference 🤣

Most of those are shared experiences across many generations though, not exclusive.

And singing wartime songs is singing - not lived experience. Performing Handel's Messiah doesn't mean I lived through the War of Jenkin's Ear.

I am a millennial and I can confirm this is something every single one of us thinks.

I am a millennial and I can say that every single one of us doesn't think like that because I don't.

Mumofthreeteenagers · 20/06/2026 23:51

What a load of twaddle! One event in America defines a world? No, I dont think so!
You're batshit to think you have/had it worse. It's not a bloody competition. There are awful events in everyone's life. Generational defining changes etc. And blaming others you have it harder - well, my mind boggles! Get over yourself. Respectfully, you are very self indulgent.

ByCyanMoose · 20/06/2026 23:50

As a millenial, I did not, in fact, hear you out. You are welcome to try again tomorrow.

In2mindsss · 20/06/2026 23:50

Im a millennial and I think we're awesome.

I think you give Gen X a bad name - Gen Xers also tend to be a cool bunch.

You sound more like a boomer describing a Gen Z tbh. Maybe you need to have some Avocado on toast and chill the fuck out dude

FWC2026 · 20/06/2026 23:38

scoobysnaxx · 19/06/2026 10:37

I am a millennial.
of course other generations have been through their own trials and tribulations and seen many world changes.
but for us, there is a real mourning attached to it. There is a very VERY stark contrast to life as we knew it as kids and the life we expected we could achieve, compared to what it is now. It’s really sad. Of course life for any generation becomes different when you reach adulthood. We are the first generation to know and remember and appreciate life before and after social media. 9/11, COVID, recessions. Have all completely changed the life we expected we could achieve. It has been really disappointing in some ways. I worked really hard, have multiple degrees and a good professional job with a decent wage. But I am not where I thought I would be. It has been so hard to get the things I wanted to have and in turn to give my children. My dad is late 70s and he is disappointed at the state of the world for me and my kids. Nothing to do with not working hard.
so yes there is a real mourning.
of course I know other generations may have their own feelings of loss/nostalgia/hardships.
I think it’s because we are the last generation before the internet really. My kids have a totally different life to what I had as a kid. Everything was so simple back then. Well simpler.

It's late. I had no sleep last night & im tired, so possibly shouldn't reply to you...
but... I'm 57, born in 69 & could have written your post?!?! I FEEL my millenial family members have less of a contrast than I do.

HeyThereDelila · 20/06/2026 21:41

I’m an old millennial and don’t think like this, nor have I ever used the expression. I think you’ve just encountered a lone American idiot who spends too much time online.
