To refuse coffee someone else rejected?

36Camelliasandcounting · 19/06/2026 07:34

It’s happened several times recently. The barista has made a drink that wasn’t the right specification for whoever ordered it. One of those things right? It happens.

Except several times recently, the barista has then poured that rejected coffee into a takeaway cup from the ‘having in’ mug and tried to serve to me. I’ve refused and been met with a fair bit of eye-rolling. Most recently I just asked for a refund and after I left a review online stating the incident had happened several times recently including twice that week and as a result I wouldn’t be going back.

The manager has since replied stating it’s policy and widely appreciated by customers to minimise waste?!

AIBU to think no one wants someone else’s rejected coffee?

YABU: I’m happy to take other customers rejected coffee.

YANBU: No. Even worse if the coffee isn’t the right spec and/or has been stood on the side whilst the original drink was remade so is then cold when presented to you.

I’ve stopped going to my usual cafe because the baristas apparently have better things to do than make a proper coffee (for £4.50). Like pour one they mistook the order of into another cup (what happen d to the temperature/ froth?!)/ update their phone/ sit down sulking. It’s saved me a lot of money and bad vibes.

I like HOT coffee

RaininSummer · 19/06/2026 11:50

If it's untouched and still hot what is the problem? Might be nice if they gave a discount though as you have saved them waste.

Yes I'm female and no not an invisible age 😂 I just don't feel the need to look at every situation as some form of discrimination , it's just rubbish service. Move on and find a new coffee shop it's not difficult

It is worth analysing patterns and finding reasons why
I am not talking about individual paranoia.
A choice not to be passive.

It's simple though really isn't it... The person has had a poor experience on more than one occasion. Yet keeps returning? Why would you keep going back for what you feel is substandard service? Just get a new coffee shop and move on. It's not that deep

It is substandard service. Not a feeling.
Customer can raise it with management if the coffee shop otherwise suits her.
Employees damaging or letting down the business need to be retrained or let go.
Standards run deep.

Gender is never an irrelevant factor in how people are treated in public.

Are you female? Have you reached the age of invisibility?

Entitled is not a bad word.

I agree that customers are entitled to have the fresh drink they requested and paid for. They are not recycling receptacles PAYING for the privilege of the slightly cooler, sniffed-at, maybe different drink.

The staff can drink it themselves if they are so keen.

What is ridiculous about it?

OP was being dismissed, guilt tripped by the employee, then by their manager for a substandard premium cost service/drink and just wanted some second opinions. Nothing wrong with that on a casual chat forum.............

If you are looking for a ridiculous post maybe look at your own 🤔

If my order was a skinny latte and the rejected coffee was a skinny latte, I'd just be pleased I got my coffee a bit sooner tbh.

It's not like the previous customer took a sip out of it and then refused it 🙄

I would assume they had sipped it or how would they know it's wrong

Holdonforsummer · 19/06/2026 07:35

If it is the same order as yours, or even something you like, whyever not? Or should we all just kill the planet a bit more?

The barrister could just make the correct drink for each customer at the time they order it - so that each individual is receiving the drink they have ordered; fresh, hot and exclusively because they ordered it.

Not be given something they don't know how long it's been sat on the side for. Was it given to a customer before them? Tasted? Contaminated?

This isn't unreasonable expectations. The responsibility of ensuring that it is correct and not wasted is on the barrister, not the customer.

TheRealMagic · 19/06/2026 11:21

Well, they do have to make two drinks, as the original person presumably gets a new one. It's just that the OP, or anyone else in this situation, gets charged full price for a reject.

Yes, so they have charged twice for the one drink.

If offering seconds, waive a new charge.

ChipswithMayonnaise · 19/06/2026 11:23

Shewhoshallnotbenamed91 · 19/06/2026 11:17

Gender is entirely irrelevant to this. I'd hardly imagine it's been sat there long enough to go cold either like the OP stated. It's very much " entitled"

First world problems and all that hey 😂
Would I want a drink that has been touched by someone else? No... But if it was made hadn't been touched and it was the same order as mine I can't see the issue? Seems a bit dramatic

So the company charges twice over for one, deteriorating drink?

Do men or sharply dressed people get offered seconds so often, or is it just 'ordinary women' targeted as paypigs for slops?

@EveningSpread the coffees aren’t hot. By the time they’ve come back from the table, waited in the cup for the right drink to be remade, the right drink served and then it’s been filled into a paper cup for me they’re stone cold.

That’s also not the point. Tipping a coffee from a proper mug into a paper cup changes the texture of it - the cappuccino loses all the fluffy foam and just turns the regular milk. So it’s not the drink you ordered. And even on the rare occasion it is hot, it’s bloody disgusting because the texture is wrong - it’s no longer creamy but just like drinking tea. I’m not paying £4.50 for that!

You're not wrong.

The manager should be retraining the staff and the customer should be given the choice AND offered a discount because its their literal waste.

Rather than guiltily the customer because of The Planet they should take responsibility for getting it right first time (never mind my eye roll that they talk about The Planet whilst presumably chucking away the takeaway cup that was used for five minutes amd can't be reused due to allergy risk 😑)

Gymnopedie · 19/06/2026 11:20

And I'd be wondering how that table had determined that it was the wrong one. Had a mouthful and then realised?

There's a clear difference between an espresso and a cappucino, but if it was less obvious?

Don't go bringing common sense into it, ChocolateApples!! Grin

This constant "we're doing it to avoid waste/save the environment" makes me irritable - not because the concept's wrong in itself, more that it's an all too useful excuse for incompetence

I also find it so irritating when companies dress up things that save them money as eco-friendliness. 'We're not going to change your hotel room towels everyday to save the planet'.

I avoid Pret, Costa, and Starbucks for ethical reasons, and have a reusable stainless steel cup.

It won't save the planet much more to reject someone's cooling, repoured, random.coffee.

They could save it to water plants or add to compost, if it isn't milky. They should be saving the coffee grounds for this, or to redistribute to local people who make beauty treatments from scratch.

YANBU, OP.

If the café is so keen to save on waste they could offer it to you for free. Then everyone gets to feel they are winning.

This remeinds me of one time I was at a food van and asked for Thai green curry. The previous person had been given the wrong thing (sweet and sour chicken) so the bloke replied "do you want sweet and sour chicken?!" Thinking I'd take the incorrect thing he had dished up. I didn't of course

🤣 honestly, some people don't deserve to be in business

anotherside · 19/06/2026 10:53

I’m with OP. If I’m paying £3-4 quid for a coffee I expect it to be made correctly and at right temperature etc. Not thrown around between different cups. If it was £1.50 from an icecream van stall then fine whatever. High prices come with the expectation of good, professional service.

Autumngirl5 · 19/06/2026 10:51

If it is freshly made then why not? It minimises waste.
