To think if Keir Starmer is ousted there should be a general election

I think the set-up should be changed and if the PM is voted out by his party then there needs to be a general election. I didn't vote for very left wing policies which will happen if Andy Burnham replaces the PM. And neither would have I ever voted for the dreadful Liz Truss who must be the absolute worst PM we've ever had.

I don’t understand your point.

It’s pretty clear isn’t it, there’s a screen shot from Rayner with that post.

You'll probably be disappointed to learn that Reform led Staffordshire County Council ended 2025-26 with a surplus of £6.69 million. Very different to Labour led Bankrupt Birmingham.

By savings made on the adult social care and safeguarding budget and inclusive education and learning.

I know perfectly well what the system is. I think it's wrong. I wouldnt have voted for a Labour party with Jeremy Corbyn in charge. And I probably wouldn't vote for it if Andy Burnham is PM. So why should I be stuck with him leading the country to the left.

You wouldn’t vote for them anyway so stop pretending it’s about Burnham. Most of the Mumsnet regular posters know your views because you’re always moaning about benefits scroungers and council housing etc 😂

Do you think the same of Rayner?

I don’t understand your point.

Very different to Kent CC as well where they’ve raised council tax and are dipping into reserves.

Given your fundamental misunderstanding of how our political system works I think I’d rather you didn’t vote at all.

And Americans don't elect a president ....

Yes they do with a direct (albeit via an electoral collage) presidential election. Congress and the president have separate mandates.

Viviennemary · 19/06/2026 17:22

Apparently Andy Burnham has given KS 72 hours to resign or he will launch a coup. It's no better than a 3rd world dictatorship. They are a disgrace.

Your ignorance knows no bounds. I really hope you are a Russian bot that at least might save your blushes.

Maybe we can start with calling for a by-election every time an MP or councillor changes party.

I disagree with the OP but that I do agree with.

I wouldn't even advocate one for Robert Jenrick. Only if he faces the corruption charges I think he should face and is convicted.

As long as AB sticks to manifesto pledges no need for GE. If he beers far to the left and brakes manifesto pledges maybe a case can be made for a GE.

GotTheIckWithMe · 19/06/2026 06:57

No - definitely not. Reform need enough time in local government to mess it up before the next general election , if it’s too soon they will win which will be a disaster for the country.

BeardySchnauzer · 19/06/2026 18:27

OPs alternative approach is clearly to make it so that if you change leader you have to have a general election

not saying I agree or anything

SerendipityJane · 19/06/2026 18:25

BeardySchnauzer · 19/06/2026 18:19

Whatever people thing of OPs view it clearly says ‘I think it should be changed so that…’

so the thread doesn’t really need to be filled up by people telling OP that’s not how it works because the OP is about changing the status quo

have to say if you end up spending most of a year in leadership battles instead of governing it’s not great but I really hope the current spate is not going to become the norm!!

A suggestion of an alternative approach would help ... Any fool can get behind "Wah ! I don't like that". It takes wisdom to add "... we could try this ...."

As others have said - we don't elect a PM, we just each elect an MP. They then organise themselves how they wish.

However I am royally pissed off that manifesto and actions dont line up.

Assisted dying for instance has been fineagled in via private members bills and digital id was nowhere in the manifesto. Add to that the attitude regarding the EU compared to the manifesto commitments its fairly shocking.

If we had that kind of accountability with some leeway for unforeseen events, then PMs could change but a significant change in policies would require a GE or some kind of public validation

... and it clashes with the subset of people who despite knowing full well how things work, find it helps engagement if they pretend they don't.

It's amusing how the rise of "AI" correlates with a rise in the number of people who believe the UK somehow elects the Prime Minister.
