To think if Keir Starmer is ousted there should be a general election

I think the set-up should be changed and if the PM is voted out by his party then there needs to be a general election. I didn't vote for very left wing policies which will happen if Andy Burnham replaces the PM. And neither would have I ever voted for the dreadful Liz Truss who must be the absolute worst PM we've ever had.

Tbh this thing about nationalisation is real. It will be hard. But I think it can be done. And perhaps if Starmer had been less timid, he might have started it. Anyway, I think it will come, and how it happens will surprise a lot of commentators in the press. They know little. I’d be looking at the FT keenly

Just listened to Andy Burnham. He's going to change the country. Arrogant pig headed and power mad. He thinks he knows what's good for us. It's a total insult to voters. Did anybody vote for Andy Burnam's leftie agenda. I didn't.

What's left wing about it? Renationalising water? Tick from me. Renationalising energy? Tick from me. Sorting out public transport? Tick from me. Devolving more power to the regions so they can do what's best for them? Tick from me.

None of those things are left wing. What he's about to do is finally, fucking finally, wrestle the country back from the cunts who stole it from us, so the money we pay for the essentials we use is kept in the country and used to benefit us. Not fucking foreign shareholders and pension funds.

And no doubt you were raging on Mumsnet about Liz Truss coming in without a GE and trashing people's mortgages... You did, didn't you?

OttersOnAPlane · 19/06/2026 11:51

You don't seem to understand how our democracy works. They don't change the rules to suit your personal preference.

Given that the tories changed PM more regularly than most people change their knickers, no.

EasternStandard · 19/06/2026 11:47

I don’t think so. Get Burnham in and see how it goes.

Yes. Look at him in his football shirt sipping pints. Pink trousered man of the people he is

Funny it did not happen for May, Johnson, Truss or indeed for Sunak. We vote for local MPs not party leaders, unless you are a member of the party.

Nor Brown, Callaghan nor Ken Livingstone the first time he ran the GLC.

Edited for typo.

4 changes of PM on the last Government. You vote for the politics of the Party. It shouldn't be a cult of personality otherwise you are in trouble.

Isn't Nigel Farage a cult ?

BeardySchnauzer · 19/06/2026 11:35

Burnham is saying he wants to lay out a new path for Britain. That suggests he wants to diverge from the manifesto. So I do think another election is necessary. Just as there should have been when truss took over (not so much May and sunak as they did broadly follow the manifesto and May and Johnson did eventually concede an election to attempt public support for their own manifesto)

but I would prefer parties to actually have some cohesion and work as a team tbh. The last 10 years have been a farce and Labour seem determined to join the party

ByGraptharsHammer · 19/06/2026 11:25

Good luck! We vote for parties, not leaders, and that’s been the system for 250 plus years. Nice that you think it should change to meet your requirements now, of course

AImportantMermaid · 19/06/2026 11:24

Well we didn’t vote for Rishi, Boris, Liz, Theresa (the first time), or Gordon. The party votes for the PM, not the electorate, so there’s no need for a GE. Elections cost millions and millions of pounds and cause a lot of disruption, and the party has only been in power for two years - barely enough time to get many of their policies rubber stamped, never mind implemented.

hay5689 · 19/06/2026 11:16

Absolutely not. I didn’t vote for labour but that’s not how our system works, we vote for the party not the leader.

Dontcallmescarface · 19/06/2026 10:58

The party elects the leader, the country elects the party, it's really not that difficult to understand.

Sunandsunshine · 19/06/2026 06:44

You must be a total masochist OP.

Do you REALLY want to put us through the total hell of another General Election?

With the likely outcome of Reform?!

Noooo

Viviennemary · 19/06/2026 09:17

I know perfectly well what the system is. I think it's wrong. I wouldnt have voted for a Labour party with Jeremy Corbyn in charge. And I probably wouldn't vote for it if Andy Burnham is PM. So why should I be stuck with him leading the country to the left.

Because this country isn't run on the principle, 'what would Viviennemary be annoyed about being stuck with'

Level1469 · 19/06/2026 10:54

Without robust anticorruption laws, proper punishment for corporate and political fraud, a functional criminal justice system and proportional representation there's no point having a GE. It'll just be crooks of a different political colour running the show.

GasPanic · 19/06/2026 10:52

I think people vote for a leader, even if they don't technically.

But more so a lot of people vote for a manifesto. So essentially what the leader says during the campaign, even if they don't read the manifesto.

So if Burnham sticks to Starmers manifesto then fair enough. But if he wants to change considerably from that he will probably need to hold an election, and if he does change but doesn't hold one, the public pressure will get significant enough to force it.

Since Starmer hamstrung himself by commiting to a lot of things he didn't need to in the manifesto (ie tax rises) unless a new leader deviates from the manifesto significantly there is not much they can do in terms of changing the direction of government.

So either Burnham will be the same old old with the old manifesto, or will call an election to put a new one forward. IMO anyway.

nutbrownhare15 · 19/06/2026 10:49

Do you really want a general election every 1-2 years? I don't.

PenelopeAsks · 19/06/2026 10:15

That’s how it works @Viviennemaryand though not always palatable it is what we have.

TBH I think that political parties who renege on their manifesto promises are more troubling (that’ll be all of them) and an unelected upper house should cause you more angst

The OP is a Reform supporter so won't be too bothered about an unelected upper house (and would probably quite like an unelected lower house).

In the US they don’t even have a new election when a President dies. They just appoint the Vice President and if he or she dies, they work back down the line of “succession”.

Edited

You are right, Gerald Ford became president when Nixon resigned. He became VP when Spiro Agnew resigned. So never elected. Neither was Nelson Rockefeller who he appointed VP.
