Burnham has won. More turmoil?

Now Burnham has won, it will trigger a leadership contest, and if he wins, a new chancellor of the exchequer.

Surely this cannot be good for the country, or its finances?

YABU - Burnham is a true leader who will improve the UK for everyone and be a competent and respected leader.

YANBU - FFS, here we go again.

Let's wait and see, he is not PM yet and a lot can happen.

I hope if he does become prime minister he will be given more of a chance than Starmer. The minute Starmer arrived the media was out to get him, they were relentless. So much personal hate generated towards him which is really not fair.

That's what being PM is all about - accountability. Anybody, no matter what party they support should want that. He talked a good fight but hasn't delivered.

Tickingcrocodile · 19/06/2026 07:15

I can't actually see what Starmer has done that makes everyone dislike him so much. The country is in a dire state due to multiple factors from the past (never really recovered from the financial crisis of 2008 and the appalling Austerity politics, Brevity, covid) and global issues. Many other countries are facing the same problems as us in terms of expensive housing, poor wage inflation etc. There is no easy fix to it all.

If the Labour Party really wants Burnham to take over then I think the best way would be for Burnham to work alongside Starmer for a year or so and then have a managed handover.

Tana433 · 19/06/2026 07:15

I feel hopeful for the first time in a long time. For years during a Conservative government i was saying 'We need to get Keir Starmer in and give him a chance to turn things around' but unfortunately he has been a massive dissappointment. I feel with Andy Burnham in charge (i realise this is not yet a given) we have real hope of a better country otherwise inevitably Reform will get in next time and i dread to think what will happen to the UK then.

Iwantaircon · 19/06/2026 07:14

I like both of them. I’d rather starmer stayed , I think he’s decent and steady, and then Burnham lead labour at the next election.

Pinkandpurplehearts · 19/06/2026 06:37

If by ‘the rich’ you’re including those working long hours in stressful and difficult jobs to earn a good salary, then yes, it is economically selfish (and greedy!) to think you can help yourself to more of their earned income. It’s their money! What makes you think you’re entitled to it? Go and earn more yourself….

What makes you think that people who believe in higher taxes aren't already higher earners?

If you are unable to even imagine that some people might vote against their own self interest because they want a fairer society, then doesn't that make you the economically selfish one?

This is driven by Burnhams ego. I’m really sick of this male machismo shite.

I agree. I cannot stand the smug look on his face.

Honestly some people just spout utter nonsense like this with no evidence to back it up
Could be a Daily Mail journalist, their articles are like this - just overblown vitriol and grandiose statements with no real truth behind them.
The Daily Mail started the idea that Starmer is the "least popular PM ever" by just saying it over and over again.

Why do you assume that anyone who criticises Labour is a journalist? I'm actually a doctor and business owner but do feel free to carry on throwing insults around. I'm quite happy sitting back and watching the Labour party implode.

Which public sector layabouts do you have in mind, the ones who empty your bins, or who teach your children, or those who try and support vulnerable older people to remain independent in their own homes or with insufficient funds to do so?

Or perhaps all these 9-5 junior doctors and nurses who’ll save their life when they get rushed to A&E?

Superhansrantowindsor · 19/06/2026 07:10

When I look at the cabinet I think about what a really difficult and important job they have , yet our political system means you can get one of these jobs with very little or no experience. The same is true with PM. Starmer is obviously intelligent but how much political experience does he actually have when you consider he has the most important job in the country? Same with Philipson. In charge of the countries education system with what qualifications? At least Burnham has his mayoral experience. I’m trying to be optimistic.

the80sweregreat · 19/06/2026 07:09

What will a new PM do about so many things that are wrong with this country? I wished I knew, the Tories did that and nothing much changed. Best one they had was Rishi sunak and they hung him out to dry and I say that as someone who isn’t a conservative voter.
This split in the LP and in fighting is more akin to how the conservatives were for years. A new leader needs to unite people and I can’t see AB doing that.

EdithBond · 19/06/2026 07:08

NetZeroZealot · 19/06/2026 06:50

Starmer isn’t a proponent of trickledown economics either.

Thats always been a Tory policy.

‘Build, baby, build’ approach to solving exorbitant rents?

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 19/06/2026 07:07

Where did Count Binface come? Did he beat the Tory?

Evaka · 19/06/2026 07:06

I like Burnham but prefer stability. Leaving the EU has ironically turned the UK into Italy in the 80s.

Quite why anyone even believes that the Government are running things anyway baffles me.

They are owned and run by the banks who run and own us.
They don't stop the energy companies from fucking us over, don't protect us from any of the onslaught of men pouring into our country to rinse it and have fucked over the youth by making them unemployable.

They have fucked small business by making it so ridiculously expensive to employ people so businesses are being forced to shed staff to keep going.

They spin everyone into a frenzy dividing us all while screwing us over removing our freedoms yet are toothless when girls are raped and men are stabbed.

This country is bankrupt and so is the rest of Europe.
If people think Andy Burnham is the answer when all this is, is another fucking male popularity contest and more smoke and mirrors to distract everyone while they push through digital ID.

In France when electricity and gas became cheaper they immediately passed the savings onto the population, reducing energy costs in the evenings by 60% and when the fuel prices came down last week they insisted the savings were immediately passed onto the population so they could pay less.

In the UK we are paying so much more and getting so much less.

People here are far too concerned with Palestine etc and not concerned enough with making the Government sort this country out.
Anyone who does is labelled as far right to shut them down.

We should ALL be taking to the streets to protest the state of this place but unless people can virtue signal about a country on the other side of the world they aren't interested.

We are all being played.

Andy Burnham won't change shit. This country is bankrupt.

It wasn’t Labour who caused the UK to lose 6% of its economy via Brexit.

TheOliveWriter · 19/06/2026 07:04

Wishing14 · 19/06/2026 06:41

It’s good as the right will realise their mistake and hopefully by the time of the next election there will be more cohesion and Labour will be gone. Although the layabouts with their cushy 9-5 public sector jobs and pensions or even cushier benefits will continue to vote for them regardless!! The rest of us need to really come together. I believe it should be about encouraging and incentivising work, you should subsidise those who need it, but not keep them ‘better off’ through no hard work and progression which is good for no one (apart from Labour itself of course, and also increasingly the Greens).

Which public sector layabouts do you have in mind, the ones who empty your bins, or who teach your children, or those who try and support vulnerable older people to remain independent in their own homes or with insufficient funds to do so?

That was purely and simply Trump's deranged and senile inability to use or recognise normal social cues. 🤷

Yes, they watched the thousands of death in Italy, slowly spread to the rest of Europe and watched zero in NZ and they shut down being an Island

But Mandelson only existed again because of Trump and his ridiculous tariffs & general unhinged nonsense & because of our over-reliance on America post-Brexit.
Clearly Mandelson knows exactly where the bodies are buried regarding Epstein and so he was trundled off to deal (blackmail?)with crazy Trump.

But Starmer was naive to believe that the correct due diligence had been done by McSweeny and co regarding Mandelson. He was clearly lied to about the depth of Mandelson's involvement in Epstein sh*t otherwise why would an intelligent man put himself in that position?

Well......
Let's not buy into excuses, please. I had not heard this Mandelson knowing about any bodies one..... that is a new one .
But, the idea that UK PM should promote an individual who has been close enough to a murder to know where bodies are, instead of handing him to the police? And get it all properly settled and taken to court?
And blackmailing a President of another country!!??
Mandelson was always bad news, interested only in his pocket. And he has brougth zero positives to UK.

It would be the private school fees issue. Some MN froth day in and day out about this. They feel the future of the country as a whole hinges on a teeny tiny number of rich people having to pay VAT on their private school fees.

What absolute rubbish.
Starmer is not a "laughing stock" on the world stage at all.
The man who stood up to Trump and didn't let us get dragged into Trump's ego war in Iran back in February? When both Badenoch & Farage were vocal in their desire to plunge right into the mess? Just imagine if he had done that?
Trump is now scrabbling like mad to get out of a war he created and in which Iran are going to emerge the winners.
He is the laughing stock on the world stage, not Starmer.

I genuinely don’t understand how a single person votes Labour. I can only assume they are supportive of others subsidising them. There is no other rational answer. They simply have to be economically selfish.

It doesn't take long to turn from "We should listen to the working classes, respect their opinion and not see ourselves as superior to people who we disagree with" back to a "bunch of selfish, work shy scroungers" does it?
Mask slips very quickly when the ordinary people aren't being useful.
