Burnham has won. More turmoil?

Now Burnham has won, it will trigger a leadership contest, and if he wins, a new chancellor of the exchequer.

Surely this cannot be good for the country, or its finances?

YABU - Burnham is a true leader who will improve the UK for everyone and be a competent and respected leader.

YANBU - FFS, here we go again.

No I think Truss and Boris both need to argue over that crown. It’s hysterical you think Starmer even comes close to those buffoons.

Could you explain why?

Happy to take the knee for the King of the North. Burnham's steady, fiscally competent and doesn't suffer fools gladly, which is extremely useful in Westminster. If he can steady the ship, Labour just might not cede to King Joffrey Farage and his Reform party in the next General Election.

😆 🤣 fiscally competent. Yeah, when it's appeasing trade unions then it's a free for all.

Dragonscaledaisy · 19/06/2026 06:03

That expectation was set by Labour themselves. Unless you voted Labour in the last election, you have no need to be embarrassed. The current shambles is entirely of Starmer's own making and sums up his entire short premiership with the party lurching from one psychodrama to the next, creating ongoing instability.

Not particularly a shambles in reality though.

Just in the hysterical media

What absolute rubbish.
Starmer is not a "laughing stock" on the world stage at all.
The man who stood up to Trump and didn't let us get dragged into Trump's ego war in Iran back in February? When both Badenoch & Farage were vocal in their desire to plunge right into the mess? Just imagine if he had done that?
Trump is now scrabbling like mad to get out of a war he created and in which Iran are going to emerge the winners.
He is the laughing stock on the world stage, not Starmer.

He is an absolute laughing stock and if you can’t see that then it says more about you! He is a laughing stock for the very reason the world leaders can see his letting his own country go down the pan in favour of some made up dream of “fame” he has of being seen to be the one and only on the world stage.
Trump has also made him feel so small on the world stage many times too while the other leaders laughed on.

If you think the only good thing about him is for him to look good on the world stage while he lets our country and the people of our country go to shit then it really shows just how low your bar is for what you’ll accept from a government! Should be country first before world stage, not sell your country out to look like a big tough guy on the world stage. He looks ridiculous!

Whatabouterry · 19/06/2026 07:37

The absolutely last thing this country needs is even more instability.

None of the Labour government seem to have any decent strategies to promote growth. They all just want a fairer country and seem to think that business and taxes can fund their vision.

The reality though is that running a business right now is tough - it’s a challenging economic climate and Labours policies have made it even harder. Creating even more uncertainty is going to make things even more difficult. You need businesses to remain profitable if you are reliant on their tax revenue and you need stable governance to inspire confidence of investment into the UK.

I’m quite an optimistic person usually, but I’m extremely pessimistic about this.

And?

This tired defence from Labour supporters trotted out any time anyone dares to state what a mess they have made and how everything is now even worse is so futile.

I am not a Labour supporter nor a Tory nor a Reform voter.

Yes, and they are meant to be the grown ups. They were happy to dish out shit every week on here when the Tories were in. Different ball game when your party have got to make tough decisions. If it wasn't for the serious matter of the country's interests at heart, I'd be getting my popcorn out for the leadership challenge.

FlyingApple · 19/06/2026 07:36

We need stability, not leadership changes. I'm really annoyed at labour and Andy.

If by ‘the rich’ you’re including those working long hours in stressful and difficult jobs to earn a good salary, then yes, it is economically selfish (and greedy!) to think you can help yourself to more of their earned income. It’s their money! What makes you think you’re entitled to it? Go and earn more yourself….

Do you think it’s only the “rich” who have difficult and stressful jobs? How ridiculous. I work long hours in a difficult and stressful job but I’m not rich - dh earns significantly more than me but doesn’t work the hours I do. The utter bullshit that the more you earn the harder you work is such a fallacy. Tedious and ignorant 🙄

Iwantaircon · 19/06/2026 07:14

I like both of them. I’d rather starmer stayed , I think he’s decent and steady, and then Burnham lead labour at the next election.

It takes time to get ready for that. If you want Burnham for next GE you’re better to swap now.

It wasn’t Labour who caused the UK to lose 6% of its economy via Brexit.

It will be a massive relief to get rid of Reeves but not if she's replaced by Milliband. Another ego, whose sole interests lie in his own pet projects.

Why are they all so awful? 🥴

Try watching the video. Starmer is not a leader, he’s a silly sausage. Time for him to go. He will go down in history as being one of the worst PMs ever!

I quite like Streeting and thought he did a reasonably good job as Health sec. He's also more to the right of Burnham but would bring a more centric approach that I think Labour need. Socialist Burnham isn't the answer. He's going to sink us further with giving trade unions what they want. It's going to be a period of more misery on middle income earners until Burnham is inevitably ousted. I want to see what he will do with the defence budget.

Agree Streeting did a decent job as health secretary and would bring a more centrist approach to Labour.

He could do for Labour what Kemi is doing for Conservatives - appeal to a broader base. Think it will be Burnham for PM though as Labour still seem to think they should go more left wing despite evidence to the contrary.

Hoping to see KS, RR and BP resign, it is labour’s
last chance, even given circumstances they’ve shown no ability to connect to people.

Ugh - I feel really down about this and I actually don’t agree that it’s better than reform winning - I think it makes Reform more likely to win in the next election because on top of the people who think Starmer (in less than 2 years) should have been able to fix decades of issues that have built up under several governments and a very unstable global economy over which he has very little control, we’ll now get the ‘he wasn’t voted in by us so has no mandate’ voices too. I find it utterly depressing. No one from any party would have done any better - the problems that we have cannot be fixed in less than 2 years and no one has anymore idea than Starmer (well I certainly haven’t heard any other party put forward any workable suggestions anyway) as how to fix all of this given the causes. I blame Streeting, not Burnham though for triggering the start of it all. The country desperately needs some stability and those two idiots are about to take it away from us in a depressing leadership contest where what we need is sensible. Once that has happened, all those they that seem to think someone can magically fix all of this, will bay for an election for the next 3 years because yuh know, we didn’t vote for Burnham so he has no right to make decisions in my name blah nonsense. I had hoped the World Cup might bring the country together over the next few weeks but no, we’re going to have to suffer through this now.

It’s the flip flopping and cowering to back benchers.

he could have changed benefits reform and didnt
he shouldn’t have cancelled the Rwanda deal unless he had a solid plan to ‘smash the gangs’.

he shouldn’t have accepted freebies.

That's a bit sausage-ist.

Noras · 19/06/2026 07:30

Th3 issue is that Starmer cheated the electorate because he promised a central government but did not deliver that. He promised welfare reform, investment and increased productivity.Instead his back benchers stopped welfare reform, gave more welfare in the for, of lifting the 2 child cap and he took away the winter fuel not in his manifesto. He also attacked the farmers and I think misled as he increased taxes on working people who get dividends etc. They failed to smash the gangs. All they did was introduce the easier policies to gov3 money away - not their money I might add but the employers / tax payers money.

Now Labour ironically thinks that a lurch further left is the right thing to do. It’s the complete opposite. They need to listen to the floating voters not the rigid Labour voters. They want stability, productivity increase and growth not the spend spend.

This is a disaster as they will lose the floating voters and it will be carnage. Their future policies will crash the economy as borrowing is already up.

Absolutely agree, conservatives destroyed everything for their personal selfish gains. It’s ridiculous to expect that undone any time soon!

Selfish personal gains - you mean like running in a by election so you can become PM?

Who would want to be mates with Starmer! 🤮

Well who else have they got?

Quite. But it really is remarkable that almost every other political party in the UK, even the DUP FFS, has managed to elect a woman to lead them and the Labour Party, supposedly the main voice for equal rights, equal opportunity etc, never has. I should add I've never voted Tory in my life and probably never will. I've mostly voted Labour. In recent times it's because they were the least bad option. God knows what I'll do at the next GE.

HighHeelsRedLips · 19/06/2026 07:27

InterestedDad37 · 19/06/2026 07:02

That was purely and simply Trump's deranged and senile inability to use or recognise normal social cues. 🤷

Or perhaps all these 9-5 junior doctors and nurses who’ll save their life when they get rushed to A&E?

And are there no 9-5 jobs in the private sector 🤔
