Burnham has won. More turmoil?

Now Burnham has won, it will trigger a leadership contest, and if he wins, a new chancellor of the exchequer.

Surely this cannot be good for the country, or its finances?

YABU - Burnham is a true leader who will improve the UK for everyone and be a competent and respected leader.

YANBU - FFS, here we go again.

It’s good as the right will realise their mistake and hopefully by the time of the next election there will be more cohesion and Labour will be gone. Although the layabouts with their cushy 9-5 public sector jobs and pensions or even cushier benefits will continue to vote for them regardless!! The rest of us need to really come together. I believe it should be about encouraging and incentivising work, you should subsidise those who need it, but not keep them ‘better off’ through no hard work and progression which is good for no one (apart from Labour itself of course, and also increasingly the Greens).

Yes, those police officers, nurses, firefighters and paramedics with their cushy 9-5 jobs...

Even my glorified pen-pusher public sector job involved working evenings sometimes, and I've never met a teacher who doesn't work well after school hours.

Lisa Nandy as PM material ?😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Shaba Mamood I could definitely get behind as PM but it would never happen because unfortunately, in Labour Party land women are not seen as leaders.

I disagree. They have had deputy leaders who have been female. Yes they probably do need to have a female prime minister otherwise silly billies will keep banging on about the fact that they don’t like women because of it!

But also think sex is not the most important factor in electing a leader. Competency and policies are more important - look at the mess that was Liz Truss.

We've always voted for a party to govern us and the members of the party pick their leader. Nothing new in changing PM mid-term. Wilson > Callaghan, Thatcher > Major, before we even get to the post-Brexit merry go round of Tory PMs.

Eden and Macmillan were both replaced mid-term, too.

Well......
Let's not buy into excuses, please. I had not heard this Mandelson knowing about any bodies one..... that is a new one .
But, the idea that UK PM should promote an individual who has been close enough to a murder to know where bodies are, instead of handing him to the police? And get it all properly settled and taken to court?
And blackmailing a President of another country!!??
Mandelson was always bad news, interested only in his pocket. And he has brougth zero positives to UK.

It's a turn of phrase - not literal bodies for God's sake?

Oh come on! What Labour members have said time and again is that their numerous female MPs are somehow not quite good enough to lead them. Not quite as ' statesmanlike' as giants like Jeremy Corbyn or Ed Milliband. It goes deep. It's nothing to do with policy. We don't have a Presidential system. It's the Labour Party and the bias they largely seem to have. The problem Labour have is that they never look at themselves, their infighting, their endless purity spirals, their obsessions with how terrible everyone else is, patting themselves on the back about how ' progressive and non racist they are etc. They are the Guardian of political parties. Spouting on about their moral righteousness while being sued for unfair dismissal and racism and hounding staff out of their jobs.

Edited

You seriously think any of the other political parties are any better?

I was addressing the point that there are female politicians that could do the job. Whether or not the members vote for them is a different issue. And many are now of the view that sex of a leader is not the most important issue but competency and frankly I agree.

Can't say I'm enthusiastic about the Labour Party electing yet another white male leader.

What a totally racist comment. Do you think that would be acceptable to say about anyone else with a different skin colour?

Whataflippincircus · 19/06/2026 09:55

I’m relieved Burnham won. The thought of the misogynist reform candidate getting in was very concerning!

Now to get Starmer out. The man is hopeless and unfortunately he can’t see at all how bad he is. He’s completely delusional.

What choice do they have? They have woven denial of sex and sexual orientation into their concept of the world and they have an anti Semitism problem and you know, who is left?

leli · 19/06/2026 09:29

What utter hatred from you? I don't understand your position at all. I see Burnham as the narcissist.

I’m a historic Labour supporter(no longer due to Starmer) and I agree that Starmer is a narcissist and totally needs to go. He is slowly Labour Party and if he stays, it may well be irreparable. Andy Burnham is a much more capable leader and is supported my many more MPs than Starmer.

Flyingintotheunknown · 19/06/2026 09:51

ClarkeandNewman · 19/06/2026 09:48

Have a look at historic polling from about 2016 onwards.

Yes I agree… however, they didn’t get as unpopular as Starmer and certainly not so unpopular within their first 12 months. They won the biggest majority in a hung parliament in 2010 and formed a coalition with the Lib Dems, then won 2 further general elections before being voted out in 2024. Even the Blair/ brown government lasted 3 terms too before the point of becoming so unpopular. KS has managed it within record time. Thats what I’m saying.

I demand a recount!

😂

It's yer family voting innit?

I genuinely don’t understand how a single person votes Labour. I can only assume they are supportive of others subsidising them. There is no other rational answer. They simply have to be economically selfish.

We’ve become deluded with illusions of fake wealth. There’s about 20% of the population who will benefit from non-labour policies

ClarkeandNewman · 19/06/2026 09:48

Flyingintotheunknown · 19/06/2026 09:04

The tories took 14 years to become unpopular! Starmer has trumped that by becoming the most unpopular PM ever and he did that within his first 12 months of his premiership so nice try

Have a look at historic polling from about 2016 onwards.

DogAnxiety · 19/06/2026 09:46

The most serious problem facing this country is the political manipulation of social media algorithms and the (probably partially foreign) funding of bot farms, coupled with the inability of people to critically and independently appraise actual evidence on politicians’ and governments’ performance.

BIossomtoes · 19/06/2026 09:46

june35 · 19/06/2026 08:49

This was an extremely safe Labour seat, and a possibility to get out a quite unpopular prime minister. It wasn’t about Reform.

It wasn’t extremely safe, the majority was 5k. It is now - Burnham’s doubled that.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/06/2026 09:45

Loopylalalou · 19/06/2026 09:07

Perhaps Burnham got the majority as people voted primarily in a belief he’d get rid of Starmer.
Perhaps Reform achieved around a third of the vote as people wanted to signal and unhappiness with the established parties.
Perhaps that’s why Conservative received just over 2% and the LibDems 0.36%.
I don’t take this as any endorsement of Labour policy at all.

Obviously Aberdeen South was a special case, since it’s gone from Oil Boom Town to a long way from that. The promised renewables jobs have apparently not materialised, while we still need to import energy. Hardly surprising that Miliband and his Net Zero, and therefore Labour are the enemy.

IMO Miliband has been a disaster for this country anyway, starting way back, from his aligning himself with the Labour Left, against the IMO far more electable David M.

IMO if not for Ed M’s arrogance in imagining that he was PM material, we’d v likely have had David M as PM - we wouldn’t have had Cameron, and we probably wouldn’t have had Brexit.

I dislike his policies about giving more powers to local Mayors and local authorities. A recipe for corruption if ever there was one. And it also diverts accountability for policies from Westminster. Makes life easy for them. No. They stood, they can decide things, they can be accountable. And a bit rubbish if you vote one way and have a Mayor and Council not of the colour you voted for in a GE. The whole point of a GE is to get the party in who make policies nationally. Not one that say oh, we are handing all the powers to the locals so red rules apply here, yellow over there, light blue there etc.

Totally agree. It’s happening in my area. And it just creates more bureaucracy and wastes more money. It doesn’t actually make things more democratic at a local level.

JuliaBraverman · 19/06/2026 07:39

I’ve heard it all now! Oh it wouldn’t be Starmer’s fault would it… no it must be Trumps!

Hahaha… 🤣 Labour voters deserve their leader.

PrettyDamnCosmic · 19/06/2026 09:29

It's the parties who spend most on campaigning etc. And that is not taxpayers money.

Each party can spend up to £180,050.

The cost of the upcoming Manchester mayoral by-election could be up to £5 million.

Who pays that 5 million ?

You may use the name you want, of course. But it makes you appear unintelligent and contributes to a process resulting in populism and exactly the kind of division and low standards we see in politics today.

Language matters, as does reflexivity.

You seem a bit focused on a name over Starmer’s major issues. And again if that’s what you think, who cares? Your opinion written like this means nothing to me.
