Burnham has won. More turmoil?

Now Burnham has won, it will trigger a leadership contest, and if he wins, a new chancellor of the exchequer.

Surely this cannot be good for the country, or its finances?

YABU - Burnham is a true leader who will improve the UK for everyone and be a competent and respected leader.

YANBU - FFS, here we go again.

I don't agree that he isn't relatable, he strikes me as a normal person, probably an introvert. Nothing wrong with that. I think it's childish to expect the prime minister to be like your best buddy - we shouldn't choose leaders on that basis. Boris Johnson, anyone?

But I agree that Andy Burnham appears more charismatic and he is certainly coming out fighting, so if people respond to that, so be it.

Boris, Trump and Jacinda should have taught us what happens when people vote for a Big Personality.

I won't vote coz I don't live in Britain. But was over last week for a visit. My sis and bil are happy enough with Starmer, they like that he is boring. And they say things are slowly improving. They run a small promotions business so pay attention to stuff like inflation.

Having said that I think the main problem with any change at PM will be the Tory press as per usual. Eden replaced Churchill to widespread indifference. MacMillan usurped Eden , yawn. Douglas Home dislodged MacMillan, whatever. Major pushed Thatcher aside , phew. May , Johnson, Truss , Sunak , wake me up when it's over.
But if it's a Labour guy the case is altered suddenly - he has no mandate ! Immediate election or it's the end of civilization as we know it.
You can just see Chris Mason , Kuennsberg et al ramping up the faux outrage , to say nothing of GBH news....

Yes to all of this. I just want boring and reliable with change going in the right direction. Exactly what the right wing owned press hate.

Starmer is definitely not relatable though it’s why he’s going, and other reasons. Your earlier android description fits Starmer way more, hence the party ousting him.

Burnham might have more of a chance to connect.

How funny to see you call out namecalling 😂

Enjoy. Ik you’re following closely.

Are you appreciating Starmer going?

Mcdhotchoc · 19/06/2026 12:11

At least Reform didn't win.
Labour clearly need to go with a popular vote and someone with more personality. Let's hope it's enough to consolidate the vote away from the far right.

Smeuse · 19/06/2026 12:10

EasternStandard · 19/06/2026 11:43

Yep. Better than the rewriting of her last name too on some threads. I like her, and it looks like others do too going by her polling. She polls above the others and a smidge away from being the only leader with a positive net rating.

And I still think Labour have a better chance with Burnham not Starmer. If Labour MPs are feeling hopeful today which I’m sure many are then get him in. They’d be mad not to.

Why? Because she's a woman? Because she is 'common'? Because she's been photographed, no, papped smoking or on a boat?

Because she comes over as confrontational and thick as pig shit.

Can you really imagine Angela Rayner as PM? Representing this country on an international platform? God help us...

And it's not really a question of 'liking' anyone in particular, I support what Labour stand for and are trying to do in a difficult political, national and global climate. They may not be perfect but I do not agree with any of the other parties' stance, statements or policies.

Happyjoe · 19/06/2026 12:05

Speakeasier · 19/06/2026 11:13

I know. How can we still be believing that the Tories are the party that champions the economy when they presided over such a decline in this country this century plus the economically disastrous Brexit. Just because it may benefit you short term with e.g. lower taxes, it doesn’t long term with crumbling infrastructure and a crumbling economy.

The press! It's down to mainly tory owned press. Shocking state of affairs.

She seems so down to earth. 😂

This brings to mind a quote by some wag or other describing a Tory MP thus: "Something about him suggests a mother planet other than Earth."

I like Kemi too. She seems so down to earth. The problem is she’s a leader of a party that now has a seriously bad reputation and it’s going to be difficult, if not impossible for her to fix. She would probably be better off starting her own party at this rate. But the more I listen to her take on KS in the PMQs the more I like her.

LOL at women relating to political android Kemi Badenoch on a human level.

Obviously, she gets loads of support if not on mn. Who do you relate to? Starmer?

incidentally · 19/06/2026 11:53

Stardustnush · 19/06/2026 11:37

Eh? Makes the poster look unintelligent? Populism!?! What on earth are you on about?

Maybe it's worth considering that people like calling Kemi "Kemi" as it's the woman's name? It rolls off the tongue and frankly speaking many women in particular relate to her on a political and human level. I allow my kids to watch some PMQ and political debates, interviews etc and they like "Kemi" above other politicians...

I would just be happier if both the Labour Party and indeed the Conservatives stopped chasing Reform and their regressive agenda.

Look at who Reform and who they thought would be a good candidate for Makerfield. A foul mouthed man who is happily sexist. That was their choice.

If Labour or the Conservatives cannot beat a party with that sort of low rent and nasty attitude then we are in trouble. All of us.

You may use the name you want, of course. But it makes you appear unintelligent and contributes to a process resulting in populism and exactly the kind of division and low standards we see in politics today.

Language matters, as does reflexivity.

Or I am happy to subsidise others who I believe need it.

The problem is when you subside things it puts the cost up for everything.
