Burnham has won. More turmoil?

Now Burnham has won, it will trigger a leadership contest, and if he wins, a new chancellor of the exchequer.

Surely this cannot be good for the country, or its finances?

YABU - Burnham is a true leader who will improve the UK for everyone and be a competent and respected leader.

YANBU - FFS, here we go again.

Yet still the country wasn’t as divided as it is now.

I would argue that it was just as divided. There was a real distinction between the haves and the have nots; and of course if you were black, gay, a woman, working-class....you wouldn't have thought you were living through halcyon days in the 80s.

Why are you talking like I’m a massive fan of the tories?? I’m not! Do you not think I disagree with what they did either. But as I’ve pointed out earlier. It took them 14 years to lose popularity. It’s taken Starmer less than a year. I think a lot of people wanted him out after his first 12 months and that’s a record. Liz Truss was not elected by the public. Starmer was.

When did I say you were a fan of the Tories, I don't remember typing that at all?

I was merely challenging your sweeping statement (again) that Starmer is the "worst PM in history" and cited two PMs with poorer track records who just happen to be Tory Prime Ministers.

I don't think Starmer has done enough bad things to be called the "worst PM in history" not by a long chalk.
Before the dreadful, illegal war in Iran was started by Trump the economy was actually starting to get back on track.

Forty years ago we were in the thick of Thatcherism. There were strikes as the government radically reformed society, de-industrialising and de-unionising. Section 28 - anti gay legislation - was in force and homophobia was rife. Thatcher was refusing sanctions against South Africa, racism was normal and commonplace in the UK. The Broadwater Farm riots had recently happened. Women faced gross misogyny and rape victims routinely disbelieved. Unemployment was high, as was inequality which dramatically widened in the 80s. Let's not look at that period with rose tinted glasses.

This sounds strangely familiar. Some of it at least.

So…. Look at how the country was 40 years ago. I seem to remember it not being so divided. Morale was nowhere near as low as it is now.
Starmer labels anyone who speaks out against him as far right. The digital ID thing… dressed up as banning kids U16 from social media yet adults have to verify their age via digital ID to prove they’re adults.

I'm not sure I understand what you say. Do you mean that a left wing government or left wing movement is trying to pit people against each other on the grounds of whether they're concerned about immigration? What benefit would that bring?

I'm not aware of the government wanting to control the population as a whole. Again, to what purpose? There isn't a plan for mandatory digital ID; that was dropped as compulsory ID schemes tend to be, no matter what shade the govt. that suggests them.

I guess I'm just interested less in the how you think the left is trying to create division and more in the why.

I’m sorry, but this is nonsense. I’m not sure where you are getting your ‘viral videos’ from, but its clearly not what the rest of us are seeing.

Social media algorithms have a lot to answer for. You like a particular video, they give you something similar to look at. Soon you see nothing else. A lot of these people never look at any of the traditional news sources which are regulated and accountable. God only knows who's funding a lot of the nonsense that's pushing people towards the various extremists at both end of the spectrum. Nobody who has the interests of the ordinary UK population at heart, that's for sure.

What unlimited mass migration are you talking about?

Maybe go and check out the latest figures.

Oh ffs 😂😂😂😂

Locutus2000 · 19/06/2026 18:46

No. Some people would label you racist for voicing concerns in a racist way. Big difference.

Why can’t you accept that there are some people out there who do call people ‘racist’ in this scenario? Just because you wouldn’t, doesn’t mean there aren’t people out there who do.

ClarkeandNewman · 19/06/2026 18:47

Sidebeforeself · 19/06/2026 18:41

Well I'm.sorry but the question was quite daft! What about before austerity? Different policies! What about before the second world war? Not the second world war. 🤷‍♀️

Flyingintotheunknown · 19/06/2026 18:45

Oh and no you’re wrong. Myself with a foreign national ex and 2 kids of mixed race has been called racist for speaking up about unlimited mass migration on these sort of threads. Go figure

Some people would label you a racist though if you voice concern about immigration levels. It’s a way to shut down debate.

You are either being wilfully obtuse, or are too dumb to bother with. Good day.

Is that all you e got to give! Nice to try and shut people down with a bit of gaslighting isn’t it. Doesn’t wash sorry 😂

Locutus2000 · 19/06/2026 18:42

Because people are concerned about the high levels of mass immigration yet call everyone who speaks up about it ‘racists’. It’s like they are creating a them and “us” scenario.

I'm pretty sure the only people who get called racist are the many obvious racists.

The government seem to want to control everyone by whatever means possible. Pushing digital ID while claiming they have a “mandate”. Nobody gave them a mandate for that. I’ve never known the country in such a state that it’s in now. Everyone is divided. Wasn’t like this 30/40 years ago. The country is divided under this government. Never known anything like it.

Nope! Don’t give me that shit! Apparently according to the left racism means anyone who speaks out against mass uncontrolled illegal migration is a “racist”. You however, chose to target a specific skin colour - white men! Can’t be racism when it suits now can it!

He isn't the "worst PM in history" at all, he was just given that label by the right wing press and it is then parroted by people like you.
How can he possibly be worse than Boris Johnson & the way he dealt with the pandemic or Liz Truss & the way she almost single handedly bankrupted the country?

You know it's nonsense and you clearly don't like people not letting you get away with your sweeping statements that have no real basis in fact.

Youre really not that impressive either tying yourself in knots trying to defend a failed PM. Rated the worst PM in British history in fact. But let’s agree to disagree because we are just going around in circles.
