To think life is more of a pain in the arse than it's worth

Another day another random assortment of hassle and pain

And this is pretty much the best it's ever been (ok the 00s were better)

Aibu to wonder why this is a secret truth?

Well because if you say this is shit eh you get either performative Concern pathways or social opprobrium. So like parenthood there's a serious taboo ceiling for candour.

Nailed it. ‘Serious taboo ceiling for candour’ is something I feel daily.

What a brilliant illustration of my point-thanks!

You do understand that to state that everyone that doesn’t agree with your pov is in on a conspiracy is a fallacy right?

Do you genuinely think every other adult you encounter is suffering silently and unable to voice it?

I’m sorry if your life isn’t enjoyable to you. I genuinely am. That’s really sad. But many people’s lives are. And they’re not extraordinary or purposeful. They just find fun and enjoyment in living.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 18/06/2026 23:36

I really don't get this perspective.

I have had a spectacularly shit day. The chain on my bike snapped this morning while cycling to work. I got to work to find out we're likely not going to exist as a company in a month's time. The car is making a worrying noise. The cat tried to murder me. Dinner was minging.

But even on a shit day, the mars bar I had earlier tasted lush, as did the feel of the sun on my skin. I solved a problem in work I'd been struggling with for weeks, and it felt practically orgasmic. My book got to a really good point. I watched an episode of Firefly that made me feel warm, and cosy, like I was tucked under a blanket. I felt love towards DP, and DD, and DD said something that made me feel really proud of both her and me and DP as parents. I overheard a conversation between a bunch of 80 year olds that made me laugh like a drain. And walking home just now I saw a pair of legs that were almost a religious experience.

Yes, life is a series of repetitive, boring tasks that continue until you die. But the bits that filter down in between them are fucking glorious, and worth every second.

@SquirrelGG Life is what you make it.

Well no, because you can be hit with unexpected events that make life a lot more difficult, or you could be abused by other people.

They keep bringing children into the world because people get to a certain age and think "is this it? There must be more to life, better have a kid". Plus raising them kills a good 20 years. Then the cycle continues with the next generation. If life was so amazing no one would need to create a whole new being to elevate the boredom/give their life meaning, whatever. Parents justify it to themselves by gaslighting everyone that everyone normal loves life and if you don't there's something wrong with your brain.

But they ignore the fact that saying you wish you'd never been born or that life is terrible is massively taboo so no one would be honest about it even if they did feel that way.

Being brutally honest, yes, life is mostly sh*t. I’m in awe of people who love life. I don’t know whether they’re lucky, or insensitive or just blessed with a naturally cheerful personality. Maybe it’s all three. Some people have a gift for happiness. They’re good at it.

Personally, I have found life staggeringly awful. It genuinely amazes me that people keep bringing children into the world. Are they in denial about the reality of this horrible sh*t? Have they never watched anyone get old and ill? Or die of cancer or dementia? Have they never worked a boring, stressful job? Didn’t they go through puberty and bullying? There is a sort of conspiracy of silence about how horrible life is. Just as there is a conspiracy of silence about hard marriage really is, or how awful it can be to raise children. We have to pretend life is great or we’d all give up and everything would fall apart.

My DH died 18 months ago, very unexpectedly. My whole life is completely different. We did a lot together. I used to enjoy cooking for us both. Now everything feels pointless.

OohOohOohAhh · 18/06/2026 23:23

I get it OP. And I’m not suicidal. Sometimes you do just end up in a life that seems far more hassle than it’s worth. And that can be completely normal. We don’t all have to be maximising the most of every minute of every day to try to fight against that feeling. It is what it is. And shock horror PPs, sometimes or a vast amount of the time it’s quite shit. There are those of us who can’t change that at all. I’m firmly seated in the daily survivor of a shitshow position. It’ll most likely stay that way. Fuck all I can do about it. I’m not going to bemoan and detail why. No one should have to. Genuinely good for all you who have a great life. Don’t be a dick and use negative terms to berate OP. It is what it is, accept that people have a different lived experience from yours and don’t require your unasked “kick up the arse” responses.

I’m not in denial! Life is amazing and I’ve always felt incredibly lucky to have decent parents, a safe home, food and the other basics, an education and to live in the UK. I have a dull job , a small house and am single but feel very fortunate every day.
I could have been born in Afganistan under the Taliban. Or in hideous poverty somewhere.
I think to be born with good health and in the UK is like winning the lottery. I try to make the make the most of every day as so many are not as lucky. Millions can only dream of the opportunities we have here.

My life was much better I was younger, I know it will be great again. Being in midlife with kids and other responsibilities is relatively bullshit, but it’s part of the ebb and flow

Exactly. As I said, the 00s were shit. For me.

The 1970s and 1980s were much better. No responsibilities, no debts, no bills, free as a bird, lots of friends, big family get togethers, really close communities, cheapers housing prices, a family could live on one wage, the glory days.

The 00s were NOT great.

So it's all subjective.

I think it sounds like you need a higher purpose...whether that's spirituality/ a job that gives you a huge sense of purpose/ volunteering/ something that gets you feeling like your life has an important purpose

Some people do seem to need that. I don't understand it myself. I'm very happy and fulfilled with no higher purpose than just living. But yes, maybe OP is someone who just does need this?

ThatJadeLion · 18/06/2026 23:17

But that's the funny thing I have always found in my life.. I have weeks, sometimes a few years of unhappiness due to life situations or awful things that have happened in my life. Then I have had the best years ever, achieved things and felt genuine happiness. It's a rollercoaster for me, but the high bits of your life really make you feel glad to be alive and keeps me coming back for more each day.

Why the hell not? I am facing 80. Survived cancer, and am now sitting outside my campervan on a site in southern France, enjoying a hot evening, with a glass of rosé to hand. And many more such evenings to come I hope.

I love the south of France and have had some wonderful holidays there. Very jealous!

The pointlessness dies not bother me in the slightest. Why is there any need for a point to life? I'm alive. Life is good. Food. Music. Nature. Friends. Partner. Child. Work. What do I need a meaning or point for?

Of course there’s no point or meaning. Why would there be! So live life and have fun!!

Bebeemerald · 18/06/2026 23:12

Yes. There’s an awful lot of depressive illness on this thread masquerading as ‘that’s life.’ It’s not. And I’d urge all of you feeling like this to get help

basoon · 18/06/2026 23:11

RaininSummer · 18/06/2026 22:50

I think you can be happy in your life and still acknowledge the pointlessness of it all. It doesn't make me suicidal to note that the world, on the whole, would go on exactly the same without me in it although some people would miss me and me not being there would have a small impact on them.

Mate. Not everyone feels like this. There is no conspiracy. We’re not all pretending, however much you want that to be true. I like my life. A lot. I’ve loved having my child. My marriage didn’t work out but, meh, that’s ok too. Feeling so down isn’t the norm.

Edited

People who say that life is objectively shit have something wrong with them chemically, I think. It's an imbalance in the brain.

Violinorbanjo · 18/06/2026 23:10

You are making an amazing observation for which I thank Jesus who said: we are not of this world and are citizens of Heaven and the life we live now is just a prelude for the real life in Heaven

DysonHoover · 18/06/2026 23:10

In the words of Robbie Williams....

I don't wanna die
But I ain't keen on living either

Well it's one or the other, and while we're here we might as well make the most of it

Life can be hard for many but id like to think there's the odd ray of sunshine.
Life is worth it probably because I'm not a fan of the alternative.
