Not all men, but always men

Driving home from work tonight to the main news stories on the radio being 1) man tortures adopted baby to death and 2) man arrested after child ends up in crocodile enclosure at zoo.

I am absolutely sick of the daily onslaught of problematic men, monsters, committing outrages. That’s all, no suggestions, just AIBU to be sickened by this constant stream of beasts who live amongst us (Gisele Pelicot’s husband, recent terrorist attacks, daily murders of women by men) combined with personal experiences of men who ‘you wouldn’t have thought it to look at him’ turning out to be sex pests and paedophiles is putting me right off them as a sex class. Not your man, not your son, not my (lovely) Dad, but all the other men… how do we know which ones?

Its hard not to conclude it’s a man problem.

When you control for which sex spends more time in the presence of children, the number of men who abuse children is significantly higher than women doing likewise.

It's not just that either. Women who have murdered their own children do it for different reasons as a whole. Mental illness, stress. Men do it more often for spousal revenge or domestic abuse. Even the reasons behind it tends to be more violent with men.

What can done? To my mind, early intervention in mental health problems would be good. But you know how underfunded those services are in the UK. We need a vastly expanded mental-health service. We also need more and better access to de-radicalisation programmes. Formerly, those were mostly about saving young men from religious fundamentalism, but now it's also about saving them from the manosphere.

It would be really good if there was expanded access to activities for boys. Youth clubs, boys' clubs, outward bound stuff, Scouts, Duke of Edinburgh...I do think that National Service used to help with a lot. Although we probably don't want to go back to the days when it was mandatory, maybe older boys could do it on a voluntary basis.

I just think there should be more things to keep disaffected boys busy and give them a sense of achievement. But it all requires funding...

I agree with this. I think we’ve tried to inadvertently feminise the issue by talking a lot about issues and making it feelings focused rather than providing non toxic environments where males encourage other males to conduct themselves with decent behaviour.

I do wonder if this is why the manosphere is picking up so much popularity, it’s toxic and vile but it gives men a community and a sort of religious doctrine to follow from their false idols. Most men are pack animals by nature and respond to an alpha (hence the army usually working for absolutely feral boys). Very simplistic view but it’s how I see most men.

I’ve never agreed with a lot of male only clubs like scouts or man sheds including women. We want our own spaces, they need theirs.

LaRosbif · 18/06/2026 23:19

Some men are awful but they always have been. I grew up in the 60/70’s and sexual harassment /abuse was open and rife. I feel that it’s getting the same way again but it’s being magnified by social media eg incels, sites for drugging women, men pimping women on the internet etc etc. However, I also think that the behaviour of some women is getting worse - I know of two who utterly control their husbands ie their finances, how often the men can see their birth families, tracking them - and one of them boasts about it.
Social media and the mainstream press have brought out the worst in some but perhaps the potential for bad behaviour has always been there.

Jesus, what a thread.
Yes more crimes of whatever nature are committed by men, no escaping it, it's true.
But do you really think creating a thread like this is really going to help matters. Instead of venting on here and whipping up a storm, why didn't you take that anger and write to your MP or something. The only way to achieve anything, is by working together, not causing further divides.
And just think of this, does anyone on here really know who's on here, how do you know that someone might be reading this thread, get wound up, then do something stupid, might sound extreme, but you just never know.

Fuck me, just when I think men can’t be any more depressing, someone like you comes along and lowers the bar that bit further.

How dare you tell women to shut up in case we provoke some nutter into doing something violent? How dare you tell us to write to our MPs when the government has had to create an entire fucking department to deal with violence against women and girls committed by men? Do you have any idea how many women had to die at the hands of men for that department to be created? And what the fuck has it changed? We’ve written our letters. We’ve done our ‘claiming back the streets’ walks. We’ve gone on angry protests. And you fuckers are still killing us, raping us and beating us and getting away with it. Don’t you dare tell any woman not to be fucking furious about that fact.

Very well written and I totally agree with you on everything.
Incidentally, I do know how much mental health services are underfunded by.

Do you work in MH.

Male violence in some cultures and countries is much more prevalent than in the uk. Pakistan,Iran, Afghanistan have astonishing dv crime stats.

I would suggest its mainly because there is no proper punishment for their behaviours and its accepted culturally. If European countries had the same crappy legal system and cultural attitude our men would be the same.

Nothing to do with them being different in terms of race etc.

lornad00m · 18/06/2026 23:17

We're all sick of it. 😡

What doesn't help is that when we try and discuss the issue someone 🙄 will practically immediately attempt to derail the conversation with accusations of misandry and whataboutism.

Another stating the bloody obvious thread.
WE ALL KNOW THIS ALREADY.

@Eenymeanymineymo

Men are always vile to any female in retail. They would never speak to any male the same way. I see it day in, day out. Like you, I take no nonsense. Had some man in his 60's shouting at me today. For something that was of no concern to him. He was absolutely lovely to me until his wife wandered off around the store. Then he was awful. I ignored him. Just literally told him to be quiet and walked off. I bet his wife thinks he's lovely. The reality is very different. She'd be a NAMALT or a NMN for sure. When he's like that in both camps.

I have heard many similar tales to yours. Just two examples...

I have known a middle aged man saying to a checkout operator 'oooh, only if it's FREEEEEE' when she asks if he wants cashback, and she's just half smiled and ignored what he said (because she's heard 100 middle aged men that week saying the same fucking thing!) and as he walked off he said 'grumpy cow!' I mean, just how DARE she not laugh out loud at his hilarious quip?! 🙄

Then the other week - when I was loading my food shopping into my car,) I heard this man (55-ish) say to a woman coming towards him with a trolley outside Morrisons 'ooooh, got a driving licence for that have ya?' 😆

She ignored him. As soon as she was behind him (still within earshot,) he said 'miserable cunt.' His wife (I assume it was his wife) who was with him, said to him 'what? Maybe she just didn't want to engage in conversation with you. She doesn't owe you a reaction or a conversation!' He said 'no, she's a miserable cunt.'

I will be my house that he has NEVER acted like this towards a man - and would never EVER call a man a 'miserable cunt' if he ignored him.

Sadly, though some don't like to admit it, when you strip it down, the majority of men are just deeply vile.

JHound · 18/06/2026 23:08

fartotheleftside · 18/06/2026 20:27

The rate of mothers murdering their children vs fathers murdering their children are about 50/50 in fact.

And when you control for primary carer / absent parent numbers? It being “50/50” demonstrates men abuse children at far higher rates.

JHound · 18/06/2026 23:06

Tryingiton · 18/06/2026 20:16

How so ? Would you travel around Iran alone ? What about Pakistan? Their men are well documented for violence against women.

Iran - yes. I know many solo female travellers who have done (well not now obvs.) Don’t
see what that has to do with male violence against women and girls in the UK.

High testosterone levels in humans leads to aggression, dominance and impulsion when allied with low levels of cortisol which otherwise would act as an inhibitor.

StripyHorse · 18/06/2026 20:17

I am sure there was a similar British case too of a man drugging his wife for other men to rape.

There have been several in the UK - well two I know off the top of my head and that’s only the ones that made the news.

And DV is still prevelant in the UK and mainly by men. To say “yeah but it’s worse in some other countries” is the weakest of weak “whataboutery” arguments.

Yes hush up women! Stop being publicly outraged and fed up of men! If you MUST complain do it out of public view so you don’t hurt some man’s feelings and make them do something bad. Because if we all stay silent men will be totally fine and stop murdering us. It’s our own fault for winding them up by being angry about it.

@MrFlintstone Men like you are every bit a part of the problem. Instead of lecturing women about being silent so they don’t hurt feelings, how about go tell your brethren to stop killing women. Failing that, go boil your head.

It’s not always men though, there are a fair few women who harm their own children, who kill their own children.

Not really the time or the fucking place for this sort of response, is it?

There aren’t a fair few women. Proportionally the number is tiny. I expect you could reel a dozen names off the top of your head. That’s because it’s so rare that when it does happen and it’s not connected to serious mental illness, it makes the news. With men, it’s so common that only the worst cases make it onto the news. In March this year, Jess Phillips read out 111 names of women killed by men in the previous 12 months. How many of those victims can you name? How many of their killers?

If women and girls killed, raped and attacked men and boys at half the rate they do to us, we’d be under lockdown, curfew, wearing ankle monitors and surrendering our DNA. Men are receiving little more than a telling off for having horrific images of children being abused. They’re being praised because they didn’t gang rape any other girls between being arrested and appearing in court. They’re getting away with murder because they’re able to claim that the woman drove him to kill her, so they should receive the lesser sentence of Manslaughter. And you want to argue that women do it too? Absolute fucking shame on you.

DimwittedSkater · 18/06/2026 23:01

ThisBluntGoldCrab · 18/06/2026 20:19

I was very upset yesterday reading comments underneath the story of a woman who was raped in her sleep. Lots of men saying it was her duty as a wife or it must have been her fault for not giving him sex or they were married so she couldn’t complain. Lots and lots of comments. It made
me want to cry. I never used to be fearful but
I am uncomfortable now about being out alone. The trust has gone for me and that’s so sad.

Bear in mind that you were probably being manipulated. Remember when Kate Middleton hadn't been seen for a while, even though she had made it clear that she wouldn't be around for a few months because of surgery? There was a massive wave of indignation about her, all from social media. But later, the BBC and other reputable media found that much of the social media furore was whipped up by paid Russian trolls. I know it sounds like something from a Bond film, but hostile states like Russia ARE employing people to sow discord in countries like ours via comment sections and other forms of social media. They want to tear our society apart. I highly doubt the majority of British men think any such thing. The fact that it was lots and lots of men just goes to show it was probably paid trolls. I see some of this online and I always reply with "Say hi to Putin, Russian troll" and they never answer. They would if they were genuine.

I really think a lot of people would feel much better if they limited their exposure to all this. Yes, I'm aware that its ironic I'm saying this online.

I work in retail and it’s always men that come in and start intimidating the female cashiers when they can’t get thier own way. It never happens when the males are on the till, it’s happened 3 times in the last 2 weeks. They come in and start shouting and intimidating some of my female staff. To the point 2 of them have come out the back crying, I’m talking women that have been through many hardships. It’s increased 10fold the last few years. Luckily I have no emotion and usually just laugh at them, I’ve told the women if that happens again to get me because I don’t care and will shut that shit down immediately. Always the men… I don’t like to tar all of them with the same brush because not all men are like that but there’s defo been an increase of misogynistic behaviour from my point of view anyway.

Totally agree! Men are always vile to any female in retail. They would never speak to any male the same way. I see it day in, day out. Like you, I take no nonsense. DimwittedSkater · 18/06/2026 22:54

Violent crimes are mostly men, yes. And there seems to be a lot of it about, which can lead to some very ill-feelings about men. I get it.

But perhaps it helps to reflect that violent crime is actually rare. These dreadful things that happen, like things the OP has mentioned, are not typical of your average community. They are reported on because they are rare. When you read about them, it seems that such incidences are everywhere, but they're really not. While these crimes are mostly committed by men, the vast, VAST majority of men wouldn't dream of doing such things.

It's just important to remember that if you focus on the news, you will be fed a diet of horrific things, and it will seem that they are more prevalent than they really are.

Out of a world population of seven billion, the annual global number of murders isn't even half a million. It's about 460,000. Murder is rare.

https://www.unodc.org/unodc/en/data-and-analysis/global-study-on-homicide.html

To put it another way, if you were asked if you thought murders or suicides were more common, you'd probably answer murders, since the news makes us think there's a murderer round every corner. But in fact, there are almost double the number of suicides per year globally than there are murders. The number of suicides is about 760,000.

https://www.healthdata.org/news-events/newsroom/news-releases/about-740000-global-deaths-suicide-occur-annually-thats-one

I know this doesn't take into account violent crime where someone doesn't die. I just think it's important to maintain perspective and to realise that the news makes it seems as if these things are common, when they're not.
