To let my 7 year old stay up to watch the England game?

9pm kick off tonight, the first England game of the World Cup.

I have some great memories from the World Cup when I was a child. It’s once every four years…

Should I, or is it ridiculous?

I’m torn. DS is 6 quite often doesn’t go to sleep until 9.30/10 and is fine in the morning. But he’s normally in bed at least from 8.30. I’m going to see how tired he is today and take a view but I suspect my DH may veto it.

I was working in a school last World Cup, and it was a nightmare because so many really young children stayed up. Behaviour in school off the scale, tears constantly. No way would I let a young child stay up. It’s just football

On the sofa in pyjamas with a quilt or sleeping bag. He might well fall asleep. I don't suppose he'll be the only one in his class to have stayed up.

There are some children with the Tartan Army in Boston.
I'm not in favour of taking kids out of school for 2 weeks in Benidorm, but this looks like a really great experience, and a lovely dad and son bonding time.

(I know Scottish schools break up earlier, but I don't think they've broken up yet, have they?)

No, still in school until next week. I'm sure of that even if I don't know what day it is.

PurpleThistle7 · 17/06/2026 15:26

Sorry everyone - today is WEDNESDAY which means the English children have school for two more days and the Scottish children have a game in TWO days. Apparently I am wishing this week away. Won't let me edit either of my incorrect posts.

I'm not letting 10 year old stay up. Not that he's asked to but if he did want to I can't imagine letting him. DH is out helping run the bar at the cricket club as they are anticipating a busy night and I won't be watching it so he'd be sitting up late on his own.

Although would probably lose interest about 20 minutes in anyway.

Mine won’t be. He wouldn’t be able to cope tomorrow. We haven’t even mooted it as an option. He’s really been enjoying waking up to the overnight score this week every morning and filling them in on a wall chart, so we’ll carry on like that.

I think it may be noisy outside tonight. I’m sure my neighbours will be having a football party with an outside tv!

I promised DD she could stay up and watch it too.. she’s 6.. but she’s also off school this week due to her having an operation so the late bedtime isn’t an issue 🤣

I would have let her anyway though 👀

No chance. I'm teaching my children than 11 millionaires kicking a ball around isn't really worthy of our attention and we'll be reading National Geographic instead. If they really want they can find out the score at school.

@didntlikeanyofthesuggestions

lol do you feel the same about all sports?

No but tomorrow is Friday so just one day to get through. And a 9pm game will end around 11 or so? I would guess the 7 year old might go to bed on their own volition at halftime anyway.

I wouldn't have an issue with this if my child wanted to stay up late - having a wee adventure can be fun!

My kids however hate football so we were all tucked up in bed hours before the game sadly.

Tomorrow is Thursday not Friday.

Yes if he wants to. I dont think 1 late night to watch a football match does kids any harm

All 3 England games are 9pm / 10pm kick off (the 10pm game is a Saturday though) so technically not "just" one late night.

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/06/2026 15:19

Did you see Mamdani signed an order abolishing bedtime for NY kids for the Knicks games. So cute.

I’m obsessed with routine but have waved it for things like midnight sun, Aurora borealis and that sort of thing. If football is your thing, do.

TheEasterBunny3 · 17/06/2026 15:18

Mine is. He watched quite a few of the evening games since far & hasn't been a struggle to get him up for school either. He is just 8 & year 3

SupernaturalAddict · 17/06/2026 15:17

My ds who takes sleep meds due to disabilities is staying up, I even cleared it with sleep clinic because of the change in his meds time and school- both thought I was crazy if I didn't!

Your ds may only be little but it might be something he remembers for the rest of his life! Get some paper plates and snacks etc have a fantastic time, make the memories.

if it’s school tomorrow no, record it/watch on catchup in the morning

One late night is fine.

ImpatientlyWaitingForSummer · 17/06/2026 15:17

Yes you should!!! I used to absolutely love doing this as a child, it felt so special and everyone would be talking about it in school the next day. I’m looking forward to mine being old enough to do this (if they’re football mad like me and my partner) but at 2 and 11 months they currently don’t give a shite 😂

cauliflowerforever · 17/06/2026 15:17

From memory I allowed my primary aged children to stay up and they just bailed out by half time ! This was about 16 -20 years ago .

There is no 11pm Scotland game tomorrow. It’s on Friday 🫤

Yup. Am 1 day off on my week. Which actually explains a lot about an email exchange I just had. Sigh.

PurpleThistle7 · 17/06/2026 14:58

Loads of Scottish kids watched the game last weekend that started at 2am. Am sure even more will watch the one tomorrow night starting at 11. I would LOVE a 9pm kickoff!

bananaapplepears · 17/06/2026 15:14

DS is older now but yes of course I would have let him stay up to watch it.

InjuryAtSchool · 17/06/2026 15:10

@PurpleThistle7 really sorry to tell you this but tomorrow is only Thursday, couldn’t careless about football but absolutely hate waking up thinking it’s Friday and it’s in fact another week day so trying to save you the pain!

Edited

hahahaha wow... so it is. That is a horrible surprise. I have spent the ENTIRE day thinking it is Thursday.

Well.. I stand by it anyway, at least to stay up until halftime if they are keen. Maybe that's a good compromise. 10pm on a school night isn't terrible (presuming generally good sleepers, no additional needs etc). Would guess half the class will be doing the same tonight anyway.

Crunchymum · 17/06/2026 15:12

Older two (11 and 13) can watch first half but 8yo will be in bed before kick off.

FWIW the 13yo has zero interest in football otherwise I'd let him watch it.

11yo has been asking to watch the whole game but she currently has a cough and cold / is due to go on her residential next week so I am prioritising her rest.

If we get through to group stages in the tournament she'll be allowed to stay up later, although I am not entirely sure if I'll let her stay up for the 10pm kick off on 27th, even though it's a Saturday. England are hard work to watch (family of Arsenal supporters here - we are used to a different type of football 😉)

SALaw · 17/06/2026 15:11

How is there even any doubt on this?! A late night once in a while will be fine. Scottish kids have and will have much later nights. It’s FINE.
