To let my 7 year old stay up to watch the England game?

9pm kick off tonight, the first England game of the World Cup.

I have some great memories from the World Cup when I was a child. It’s once every four years…

Should I, or is it ridiculous?

Why not? It's 'event television'. Hope he has a great night. 😊

I loved keeping mine up for special things, despite usually being a stickler for bedtimes. They’re adults now and have great memories.

They never missed a New Year’s Eve party … from a few months old until they left home for uni.

MyballsareSandy2015 · 17/06/2026 17:06

My neighbour loves to make a huge thing about the fact that nobody in her family like football … her DH and 3 adult sons adore rugby as it’s much more upper class, less riff raff 🙄🤣

Simonjt · 17/06/2026 17:06

We’re letting our ten year old stay up, however it will be 10pm here, so he’ll go to bed at half time and we’ll play the second half the next morning while he gets ready for school, so fingers crossed it doesn’t go into extra time.

DontBuyAnotherBook · 17/06/2026 17:05

Eight year old will watch about half. If it were 2am then not a chance even if on Friday or Saturday. She would probably be asleep on the sofa.

JoyousWriter · 17/06/2026 17:03

Yes! Hopefully, itll be great.

😂 this has got to be a wind up...... if not then my word I feel sorry for those poor DC 😂

It's got to be!
There's 22 🤣

No chance. I'm teaching my children than 11 millionaires kicking a ball around isn't really worthy of our attention and we'll be reading National Geographic instead. If they really want they can find out the score at school.

You know what, troll or not, I’m with you 😂

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 17/06/2026 16:58

Also to be fair depending on where you live he may well be woken up by the noise if they win. There’s no way our kids would have slept through the noise of the Scotland game someone was playing fucking bagpipes down the road 😭😭. We do live pretty city centre though so again depends where you live.

Keepoffmyartichokes · 17/06/2026 16:57

13 year old wants to at least watch the first half but he's in the middle of a tough school week with tests so will see how he feels about watching more than that. He needs his sleep and doesn't cope well on a late night.
It's hard to call as all kids are different. He has friends who are up until 11 on a school night and are fine the next day, where as mine is in bed at 9.15 goes straight to sleep and needs waking up in the morning. There is no right or wrong here

ghostofchristmaspasta · 17/06/2026 16:53

I’m actually so glad DC has no interest in football, or DH for that matter. I’m already sick of the World Cup and it’s barely started 😂.

It’s all I’ve been hearing about with the kids at work, and I haven’t noticed much additional mid day tiredness, so if they can handle it I’d say why not!

On the sofa in pyjamas with a quilt or sleeping bag. He might well fall asleep. I don't suppose he'll be the only one in his class to have stayed up.

There are some children with the Tartan Army in Boston.
I'm not in favour of taking kids out of school for 2 weeks in Benidorm, but this looks like a really great experience, and a lovely dad and son bonding time.

(I know Scottish schools break up earlier, but I don't think they've broken up yet, have they?)

The arbitrary classism of 'Benidorm' combined with the baseless assumption that a holiday in Spain couldn't be a good experience, or involve family bonding time. And why is a trip to Boston to football only for fathers and sons?

Mamdani has the personality to get away with that, imagine if Starmer did it!!!!

Also, New Yorkers don’t have a stick up their arse about things like this, unlike the UK where a significant number of people, I think we can all agree, certainly do.

See how he gets on for the first half, I remember watching Italia '90 with my Dad - great memories!

StrawberryMatchaLatte · 17/06/2026 16:41

Yes if he is really into football and wants to. No if he's not really bothered. He will probably be tired tomorrow but it's worth it once in a while.

AliceMcK · 17/06/2026 16:40

My 8yo who has just got into watching football with dh will stay up for the first half. Her bedtime is usually 8.15pm. School are aware there will be lots of tired children, it’s sports day anyway so they aren’t going to be doing much learning.

Lyd8 · 17/06/2026 16:39

We will be letting our nearly 8 year, he is football obsessed and has already been staying up to watch the first half of 8pm kick offs.

If he falls asleep we will take him up to bed. He is fine with a late night every now and again.

You know your own children, some children will handle it and some won’t. No right or wrong, just do what works for you family.

Lots of different ways the kids I know did it - plenty just stayed up to watch all the games that night and then went off to play football in the morning.

Am sure lots and lots of kids will stay up next week for the 3rd game - school night, 11pm kickoff. People are very intensely excited. Sadly not my family - I like (watching) sports a lot but neither of my kids are fussed.

The primary aged kids that I know who were up for it, all did normal bed then got up about 1.45.

AmusedMember · 17/06/2026 16:14

I said no to my almost 12 year old, now I'm rethinking.

I think I'd let a 12 year old stay up.
Its still only 11pm when its done.

Lots of 12yos have groups and clubs that don't finish to 9.30 normally never mind sitting on the couch in pj's until 11.

PurpleThistle7 · 17/06/2026 16:31

Newname26 · 17/06/2026 16:28

I think the difference is they weren't getting up for school in the morning. And lots had a normal bedtime before getting up at 2am, bit like the kids who get up for the New Year Bells

But @moryn you know your child will they cope with an 11pm bedtime?

Or if they are normally an early bedder let them have a sleep first, bed at 7.30 up at 9 for a couple of hours

Op see how they are doing at half time.

Edited

Loads of Scottish kids watched the game last weekend that started at 2am. Am sure even more will watch the one tomorrow night starting at 11. I would LOVE a 9pm kickoff!

Yeah, my 13 yo stayed up till 4am watching the game on Sunday morning. But no school meant he could sleep late on Sunday morning (we're in England so no BH on the Monday 🙁).

Anyway, top tip. Tell him he needs to have a nap this afternoon and you'll wake him for the game. When ours were little we did this for Hogmanay and it worked well.

No holiday here either (Edinburgh) - lots of jet lagged children on Monday morning!
