After decades of disappointment I've pretty much given up on watching England with any hope.

I have Scottish in laws and love the place anyway but after seeing all the videos of the tartan army in Boston I'd so love for them to win ( however unlikely that may be!)

Hopefully English fans will have as good a time enjoying Boston & the locals as did the Scots - though I can't see the Irish bars swapping Saltires for St George's Cross!

Plenty of english players, normally younger ones, have played abroad in recent years

Yes, this is true enough, helped by the reciprocal agreements that many English clubs have formed with clubs in Belgium and so on, but there is still a discrepancy with how many senior and established English professionals attempt to test themselves abroad which isn't entirely explained away by salaries, because there are plenty of clubs in Germany, Spain, Italy, and even France now who are absolutely as capable of paying exorbitant salaries as the major English clubs.

Scotland has a slightly different dynamic in that the domestic league is nowhere close to the quality of the major European leagues, so even a move to a middling foreign league, including the English Championship, is a step up in quality for most Scotland-based players, but again it's notable how many players in the Scotland squad play in foreign leagues, something that is common across most other sides you'll see at this tournament with the exception of the really big hitters. Even Brazil doesn't retain it's talent, because it's long been accepted that in South American football, unless you go to Europe and make a success of yourself there, you aren't really considered to have "made it" at the highest level.

Scott Sinclair had an entirely different chant when he played at our place , good player though .

I actually just loved him.

We have loads of Celtic Songs. I could go an all night.

Probably my favourite, out of many, is the Willie Maley song. It is so long and most of us don't know all the verses though my youngest son does. EVERY VERSE.

But it's one of those songs that the chorus starts with a big "ANNNNDDD" which everyone shouts and then we all sing "They gave us James McGrory and Paul McStay. They gave us Johnstone, Tully, Murdoch, Auld and Hay. And most of the football greats have passed through Parkhead's gates to play football the Glasgow Celtic way"

Look at the size of it:

One of the midlands teams- don’t wanna say too much in case it’s outing with all my other posts on here.

I prefer watching the national teams really though- especially the women who are a breath of fresh air and there’s definitely no trouble with any of the fans at those matches as far as I’m aware. 😊

I just love the game- think it brings people together more than it drive them apart. Love the fact that most teams now are made up from people all over the world and it’s the kind of game most kids can afford to play, pretty much anywhere- you just need a ball!

Just found the video of Scotty.

Their first goal against Croatia, and they were already posting "it's coming home!" like they'd won the whole thing.

I really don’t think people understand the ‘it’s coming home’ thing.

It’s a song/statement about hope, not a statement of a foregone conclusion.

I also don’t really get the whole ‘England are so arrogant’ narrative, I don’t see them as any different to any other country, all over socials I’ve seen fans of a lot of different nations have a hope/‘I genuinely think could win this’ feeling going on.

If anything, I don’t see most other countries being so negative/embarrassed about their own team/country as we seem to be 🤷‍♀️ (As can even be seen on this thread)

Although strangely, I’ve seen quite a lot of negativity from the Brazilian fans on social media about their own team, and being jealous of Englands ‘Aura’ / culture, especially musical history.
So that’s been new and interesting 🤷‍♀️

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 20/06/2026 20:31

Frank Skinner always jokes that he wrote a Scottish version of Three Lions, which is called Three Games.

And there’s a very good reason for that!

Murica · 20/06/2026 20:28

I know it's different over there. Over here, I'd cross the street if I met a crowd of men bellowing about cunts. No matter who they were insulting.

I've seen some people on Twitter now saying that chant never happened though. I hope they're right.

Differentforgirls · 20/06/2026 20:22

Secretseverywhere · 20/06/2026 20:17

I’d agree ( also Scottish)

People also use utter cunt for pisstakers as in that complete and utter cunt

Kevin Bridges does a funny bit on how “that cunt” is a gender neutral term in Glasgow.

He's right! I love him but he can't beat Billy for me. No one can.

@JollyGreenSleeves

Scotland qualified for Euro 2020 as well, 3 of the past 4 major International Tournaments.

As for players with International profiles -

Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour won Serie A 2024/25 in Italy playing with Napoli, McTominay was named Serie A Player of the Year

Lewis Ferguson plays for Bologna and was also high in the Player of the Year voting a couple of seasons back

Josh Doig plays for Sassuolo, also in Italy, Keiron Bowie at Verona, Aaron Hickey also played in Italy before returning to the UK

Jack Hendry currently plays in Saudi Arabia, a money league which has attracted premium talent from all over Europe and South America

Che Adams has been playing in Serie A with Torino for the past couple of seasons and scoring regularly.

Scott McKenna also plays in Croatia with Dinamo Zagreb having previously played in both Spain and Denmark

Ryan Gauld plays in the MLS with Vancouver Whitecaps

These are just the players either in the current WC Squad or who have recently been capped, and doesn't include the dozens of other Scots playing in various European, Middle-eastern, and Far Eastern Leagues.

Contrast that with the picture down south where English players are apparently totally uninterested in testing themselves in foreign climes, and no, it's not because they have the richest league in the world, because English players very rarely moved abroad anyway even before the advent of the Premier League.

Plenty of english players, normally younger ones, have played abroad in recent years.

It was a problem in the past. Primary due to the high PL wages.

Has anyone ever used the word "boring" to describe you?

I see you have been on this post all day.
That is beyond boring. But each to their own.
i feel sorry for you if MN is your life.

You might not like this, but it's almost like a term of endearment in Scotland now.

When I was a wee girl, it was the worst word. The lesser bad words were things like "bloody". And we had an answer to that.

"Bloody's in the bible, bloody's in the book, if you don't believe me, take a bloody look"

But now? People use it indiscriminatley.

"Aw, see that wee guy, he's a good c*nt really".

"We were away for the weekend and had a c*nt of a time"

"Met a guy in the pub at the weekend and he was the funniest c*nt I've ever met".

I remember walking back from work one day around 2014, and this woman came out of a shop and roared "aww jeanie ya lovely c*nt, how are you doing".

I laughed all the way home as I couldn't believe the brass neck of her but loved the fact she didn't give a flying one.

I rarely use the word, though I have on here, once, still ashamed of it.

I don't like it either tbh and you are not a snowflake, but language evolves.

Maybe.

Cunt is a misogynist insult here only used for women. I'm not a snowflake for not liking it.

Agree with the bringing people together bit.

I support Glasgow Celtic and we had a player called Scott Sinclair (English), I loved him and I loved his chant. It was to the tune of "the logical song". He was getting a lot of racist stuff from other teams supporters (Rangers) due to his colour, not his nationality.

So he had been having a hard time and at one game our supporters (Green Brigade made it up) sang "Scotty Sinclair, he is so wonderful, he's beautiful, he's magical. When he runs down the wing, he's as fast as lightening, it's frightening, and he makes all the bhoys sing", next words were just "doo doo doo" to the tune. You should google it.

Then at the end of the game Scott and his fellow team members came back onto the pitch with "show racism the red card" t shirts on and clapped the supporters.

You have been so charming on this thread - no wonder they loved you . I suspect they were taking the piss. But you sound lacking in emotional intelligence.

Oh come on! Trump deserves it! @Murica

The chants and banter is a huge part of football- god it would be a boring world if the professionally offended had their way.

But yeah I think all teams sing their national anthem.
Although the English one is a bit royalist so not everyone does for that reason I guess.

Maybe.
