Who here would honestly happily contribute to George’s education costs?

Reported to be £68000 a year at Eton.

He should go to a bog standard comprehensive in London IMO to show him how his subjects live.

That would be massively unfair to the other kids.
A politician’s DC went to school at the same time as my elder kids and it was a pain in the arse for everyone because of the security hassles, it would be a dozen times worth with George.

They do it using the powers of the crown rather than government powers though

No. It is done in the name of the Crown, as are all acts of Parliament, but that is simply because it is his Parliament but not through his rights. Those rights were superceded long ago by other laws. As King he now has very few rights at all, fewer than you and me!

AgnesMcDoo · 16/06/2026 20:23

I’m sure his parents are worth a bob or two and can manage just fine

mondaytosunday · 16/06/2026 20:22

You aren’t paying for it. It’s from private income (mainly from the Duchy of Cornwall).

EnterQueene · 16/06/2026 20:22

The self hating sycophancy of posters whose kids go to normal schools struggling for funding while happily lapping up funding some random kids unearned privileged because they have special blue blood or some such nonsense.

Ukisgaslit · 16/06/2026 20:21

@WhisperingAngelisnotbad

What evidence have you got that they are popular ?
Not some bought and paid for ‘poll’.
You have no evidence because we have never been asked if we wish to continue to support this family of Andrew protectors to the tune of half a billion a year

Dorothyperky · 16/06/2026 20:21

I confess I paid for some private education! My money minus top rate tax which the royal family pay!
Do people honestly think a future king would be out living it large in the era of digital cameras and social media. They know they're privileged, they will seek to help people. ( Ok they have one idiot) But I can't see them swigging champagne when we have a COL crisis. This is not a free life for them (see Megan who thought it's a big hoorah). We demand value for money and I know they bring in more than they cost. Eton is a great school. It's close to Windsor and the boy ( because he's a child people) can see his family. We're not paying so we need to wind our necks in!

That’s not quite right, it was used extensively in WWII but the government to requisition land for the MOD. So there is a precedent in living memory

As I said "under certain circumstances" (war being one of them) and it is done by the Government, not the King.

Ohbeehave · 16/06/2026 20:19

Backedoffhackedoff · 16/06/2026 20:18

The government and the monarch are different things though. As the PP the government have always been able to comendere your property using the law. That’s not the monarch though

chirrupybird · 16/06/2026 20:18

I'm sure Charles can afford it.

OK lets run with this.

He has had a very good education so far, so its fairly safe to assume he will meet the grade for grammar, which is his right as a child in the education system. Then there would be fucking uproar because "They can afford to send him private, how dare they take a state school place from a very able student who's parents can't afford it?!! And who is going to pay for the extra security for him and his school mates because now they will also be at higher risk too!!".

So whatever they do they will be wrong by someone, so they might as well do right by their son.

Jamesblonde2 · 16/06/2026 20:17

I’d rather pay for my future King George than some of the waste of space scallys I end up paying for, without being asked if I want to. He’s worth it.

Peacewillcome · 16/06/2026 20:16

Dorothyperky · 16/06/2026 19:47

Agreed. It's not really that important when we have a housing crisis. Leave them alone. Prince William is addressing housing access, George is a child. I actually don't think any member of the Royal family is going to play Charlie 2!

Prince William addressing housing access?! What have we got to be worried about, what with his missus helping save the under five’s? Oh wait, yes the small matter of the Andrew cover up, Charles lobbying of government, the late queens dubious use of the consent process. And still the flag waving goes on.

George’s education costs
Badgerandfox227 · 16/06/2026 20:14

More than happy to pay towards it OP, he’ll be King one day, and I’d rather he was a well educated one.

In any case his parents income, inheritance and trust funds will mean that I don’t have to contribute so all is well 😊

Giantmarshmallowbum · 16/06/2026 20:14

ShanghaiDiva · 16/06/2026 19:59

very much doubt he wrote the speech.

He didn’t, it was written by 3 other blokes. Can’t recall their names now but it’s in the public domain

WhisperingAngelisnotbad · 16/06/2026 20:14

The monarchy continues on because most people favour it at this point in time, as far as I can see. A lot of people feel quite sentimental about it: there are some advantages to the current system in terms of continuity, attraction to tourists, national feeling about state occasions and so on.

So, George is likely to be Head of State one day. His family can easily afford to pay for his fees. Lots of wealthy families (and some not so wealthy, on scholarships) pay for the top independent schools. I can't see why the royal family shouldn't choose this route, given that we still have independent schools. Since we are a democracy, presumably the survival of these schools is the choice of the electorate, who could have chosen, if they wished, to vote for more left-wing governments and the closure of these schools.

In this situation, Eton seems quite a good choice. George's dad seems to have been happy there, and it isn't too far from home. There are security advantages, as pp have discussed.

This might not be how we would organise the higher reaches of government, or the education system, today, if you started from scratch. It would seem obvious to have as much equality as possible in the education system, and a democratic republic. However, these institutions have evolved over time in the UK, it seems to be what most people want or are willing to tolerate, and I think that's kind of okay.

Favouritefruits · 16/06/2026 19:43

It’s different, the children who go to private school have parents that work hard to pay for it!

Parents that get to go home from work and have days off. Royals are never off, they are on every day and always will be. Most of us would hate their lives. I couldn't resent them there wealth, it's only a tiny consolation IMO. I'm not a royalist, not even British so I guess my opinion doesn't really count but just giving my view.

Ohbeehave · 16/06/2026 20:13

PyongyangKipperbang · 16/06/2026 19:12

He can't. The Government can (in his name as it is HRH's government) in certain circumstances but it has to be overseen by law. CPO's for example.

He cant just say "Oh I fancy that field, I am having it" Its just one of those old laws that has never been repealed but has been over written by new laws, like the ones about moving sheep and geese through central London!

That’s not quite right, it was used extensively in WWII but the government to requisition land for the MOD. So there is a precedent in living memory

I don't think Eton is struggling for applications!

No I suppose not.

IcedPurple · 16/06/2026 20:12

hyggetyggedotorg · 16/06/2026 20:11

Surely he won’t have to pay? Won’t wherever the royal children go be swamped by applications from parents desperate for their child to move in the same circles?

I wonder that too. Even if it is true, who cares?! Doesn't mean the SECOND in line to the throne should. 🙄

My cursory googling didn't turn up any European heirs 'going to the local comp'.

Didn't Princess Leonor of Spain attend an expensive boarding school in Wales?

I have no issue with it either in the same way as I’m happy for all the people who need disability payments from the government to keep a roof over their heads. Although the difference is stark isn’t it and you wonder why people end up booing the charming little princes and princess at the trooping of the colour.

Source for the widespread booing please?

Yeah, if he goes to a normal, public school like all other kids. Private schools should be funded by the parents privately. Obviously!
