AIBU to say Mumsnet has some particularly bonkers opinions?

I have been a long time MN lurker, but the last 3 weeks have actually been posting due to a post op. The place is bonkers, and I am going to miss it now I am on the mend.

Here are a few bonkers opinions.

  1. Men can become women

  2. If you have more than £3.46 left for the week, you have loads and shouldn't ask for budgeting advice.

  3. If you are uncomfortable with husband going to a strip club or a candlelit dinner with his ex, you are a controlling old witch who doesn't trust him.

  4. Something magical happens to your children the day they turn 18, and you should charge them market rent and not help them anymore.

  5. If you want to see a country that is a long haul flight away, you are environmentally worse than a Bond Villain.

  6. Dogs should always be on their leads, even in dog walking parks.

What else?

Oh quite a few do!

It’s also possible to hold 2 views at once:

  1. men can’t become women
  2. the world is also not filled with men in dresses lurking round every corner wanting to go in ladies toilets and assault women / listen to them wee so maybe let’s keep our moral outrage on the subject in proportion to the actual scale of the threat

You think men can become women??

Holy moly!!

I am sure that poster meant that it was wrong to say that “men can become women” was a minority opinion on mumsnet.

I agree with her / him. This is a rare forum where the gender critical view is expressed more often than the trans activist view.

sweetpickle2 · 15/06/2026 12:28

Isn't this just life?

I agree with some of the opinions you've listed as 'bonkers'. No doubt you'd agree with some opinions I think are equally mad. You're never going to have everyone agree with everything.

For no 4 if the magical thing that happens at 18 is they get a job, and you’re a single mum with an unsupportive father than damn right you start asking for a contribution to living costs.

Exactly

You are way, way off on 1 and 3.

I think generally, especially on AIBU, Mnetters will argue the sky is green in any elaborate or ridiculous way they can in order to make OPs feel bad about themselves.

I think that's true, but it is also the place of extremes.

It's either £47.23 is loads to feed a family of 21 or how can I possibly do the food shop for 2 grand a month.

Oh can I add to your list?

8 Dog owners don’t need to prevent their dog injuring children. If you decide to take your toddler to a public park and a dog injures them, then that’s on you.

The dog ones get very heated, the opinions are very polarised.

BleedinglyObvious · 15/06/2026 12:21

If your DH/DP has a special female friend or colleague who he seems to spend a lot of time with or texting, you are controlling and overly suspicious if you mind.

Yes, AIBU is often one to avoid!

Sometimes. Not always. I've been on some threads where people have actually been quite measured, but then I don't go on threads to get confrontational, so bob out if posters get extreme.

That's probably very sensible.

Ah I see, perhaps we are just reading different threads!

Fair enough!

Although they tend to be extremes at either end!

From what I've seen, they are in the minority on most of those threads.

You need to venture over to the Feminist board.

Thank you. I think it's very odd that people don't understand this.
It's not a hive mind.

Mumsnet is not a single being.

There is never a consensus - have you spent any time on AIBU?

Yes there is. Everyone here has exactly the same option

TheLoneliestSnail · 15/06/2026 12:09

Which threads are you reading currently that support your view?

coulditbeme2323 · 15/06/2026 12:08

TheLoneliestSnail · 15/06/2026 12:08

I disagree strongly that those are majority views on here. I would say the opposite is true.

Ah I see, perhaps we are just reading different threads!
