AIBU to say Mumsnet has some particularly bonkers opinions?

I have been a long time MN lurker, but the last 3 weeks have actually been posting due to a post op. The place is bonkers, and I am going to miss it now I am on the mend.

Here are a few bonkers opinions.

  1. Men can become women

  2. If you have more than £3.46 left for the week, you have loads and shouldn't ask for budgeting advice.

  3. If you are uncomfortable with husband going to a strip club or a candlelit dinner with his ex, you are a controlling old witch who doesn't trust him.

  4. Something magical happens to your children the day they turn 18, and you should charge them market rent and not help them anymore.

  5. If you want to see a country that is a long haul flight away, you are environmentally worse than a Bond Villain.

  6. Dogs should always be on their leads, even in dog walking parks.

What else?

If you are slim like the Princess of Wales it's only because you have a personal chef, a physical trainer and lots of money.
The fact that her parents, siblings and children are slim and that it is probably genetics are irrelevant.

in fairness, when your entire life is turned around your looks and appearance, and you have unlimited funds, it's not quite the same challenge as a working mother of preschool kids who doesn't have anywhere near the time nor money for exercise, facial treatments and so on.

Mums of young children can't even leave them home early. mornings or late evenings to go to the gym

Edenmum2 · 15/06/2026 13:27

I don’t agree with all your points but I have noticed the past week or so Mumsnet has been a particularly vile place to be. If I accidentally read a thread from a few years ago it’s actually jarring to see how supportive 90% of the comments are.

true, in real life, it would be "controlling old bitch"

I dont' really hear the word witch in that context in real life.

You should probably change the circles you move in if people are referring to women as ‘controlling old bitches’

And an 'obvious eating disorder' according to many 🙄

do you honestly. meet people as angry and bitter in real life? I sure don't!

I am not surrounded by women who hate men, or even treat them as a different species, and people love holidays and parties. People in real life are too busy living to have time to be that angry, or scared to death about anything and everything.

If real life was like MN, there would be no hope for me (or all of humanity) and I'd probably be in utter despair. It's bad on here but at least I can log off and touch grass.

Certainly I agree that a lot of people have opinions very different to my own, and I also think they have very different backgrounds and lifestyles.

Just looking at your list though, I agree that many posters seem to have a similar view on adult DC. Often these are posters who don’t have DC, or who only have pre-schoolers.

Points 2, 3, 5 and 6 are more contentious and the topics of many a thread where there is certainly not overall agreement.

I think though that very few posters believe number 1, and if they do they are very quiet about it. MN is generally very vocal in being gender critical and supportive of safe places for women.

Muffsies · 15/06/2026 13:23

It's almost as if we all have very different upbringings, personalities and lived experiences.. who knew? 😂

No-one on Mumsnet would use the misogynistic and ageist phrase 'controlling old witch'.

Woahtherehoney · 15/06/2026 13:20

The one I always find most baffling is that step mums are public enemy #1. No matter how brilliant a step mum is and what she does for her step kids it’s not enough - even in some cases where she does more than mum and dad she’s still in the wrong and then when a step mum wants recognition for the fact she does her best she needs to know her place!

Justveryveryangry · 15/06/2026 13:17

It’s the miserly attitude to money that are striking to me…such as one along the lines of:

“I have £40k in savings, excluding pensions and savings for children’s future, both DH and I have stable jobs and no debt or any big costs due… AIBU to spend £2k from these savings on a holiday knowing I can replace this in a few months.”

Cue a significant number of posters writing “no, you should save up before spending on a holiday” and “that’s very extravagant, do something less expensive that doesn’t require savings.”

so many Scrooges out there!

MrsPapillon · 15/06/2026 13:17

For me, nothing beats the baby name threads. I regularly cry with laughter at some of the names put forward to expectant mothers. Or indeed, the ones that the mothers themselves are considering for their poor offspring. “I like Ptolemy, Ezekiel or Jebediah, but my DH wants Trevor. Help us decide”.

ENGLANDalltheway · 15/06/2026 13:16

YANBU @coulditbeme2323

  1. Men cannot ever become women. They can live their version of being what they think a woman is. They cannot force others to see them as a woman. They are trans identified men TIM's who live as they thinkk a woman does. That doesn't give them the right to enter woman's safe spaces or impose on women.
Bothy · 15/06/2026 13:15

Number 4 is the only one I would say is a commonly held opinion on MN.

Some people take great exception to any parent asking for advice on how to help their 19 year old with a tricky problem. They are accused of mollycoddling or not allowing the young person to learn lessons.
Or to parents who help their kids financially because " I never got a penny from mine and it made me a better person than than those who do"

And woe betide anyone who lets their child live at home after graduation rent free and pays for them to join the family holiday or meal out.

do you honestly. meet people as angry and bitter in real life? I sure don't!

I am not surrounded by women who hate men, or even treat them as a different species, and people love holidays and parties. People in real life are too busy living to have time to be that angry, or scared to death about anything and everything.

Yes I do meet people like that in real life. If you spent 5 minutes working in healthcare you would agree.

I just thought your post was a bit ironic.

LateDecember · 15/06/2026 13:12

The ones you have listed are the most tame. You've been quite diplomatic, IMO.

DiamandaTheGreat · 15/06/2026 13:12

I think S&B is definitely getting less nuanced, i.e. people seem to be taking more extreme positions (I know that sounds ridic for a fashion board 😁). There certainly seems to be a more "my way or the highway" approach, and even more pearl-clutching than ever although perhaps not always about the same stuff.

happygreenscissors · 15/06/2026 13:12

coulditbeme2323 · 15/06/2026 12:59

And I suppose if everybody was as reasonable and polite as they were in real life, it would be dull wouldn't it!

but you don't want people to be as "polite" on here. Remove the bonkers ones who are either hateful or offended by anything and everything (that must be exhausting 😂)

you also get the truth of what people are saying behind your back, or think. So it's quite interesting to read.

Yes they do! Why do you think some trans people have hormone treatment and surgery if it’s not to change sex (in their view)??

Sigh

Are you actually saying that those people truly believe they have changed sex? Unless they’re incredibly hard of thinking, they know they haven’t.

Pollqueen · 15/06/2026 13:09

TheLoneliestSnail · 15/06/2026 12:08

I disagree strongly that those are majority views on here. I would say the opposite is true.

I believe this to be true as well. Literally every point you make, MN opinion is usually the opposite and I've never come across a poster who has drank the Trans coolaid

A858 · 15/06/2026 12:20

Oh can I add to your list?

8 Dog owners don’t need to prevent their dog injuring children. If you decide to take your toddler to a public park and a dog injures them, then that’s on you.

🙄🙄🙄

GreatOffWhiteFalcon · 15/06/2026 13:08

LizardyGuts · 15/06/2026 11:45

Some posters have some of those opinions, or nuanced versions of them. Some don't. That's just human variety.

Some things you think are bonkers I think are sane, and vice versa. It's not just Mumsnet, it's reflective of the real world.

Nicely put. Yes!
