AIBU to think this was well deserved?

Kate can glower at people as much as she wants but the monarchy is a rotten institution and people are getting more and more annoyed by it

Yes and he’d have half as much if he got taxed like the rest of us!

He does pay tax on his income from personal wealth

King Charles's earnings from personal wealth are subject to income tax and capital gains tax on a voluntary basis, rather than by legal obligation. Under a non-statutory Memorandum of Understanding with the Treasury, he pays statutory rates on personal investments and the Privy Purse (income from the Duchy of Lancaster).
A breakdown of the UK royal taxation framework includes the following distinctions:
Income and Capital Gains Tax: The Sovereign is legally exempt from UK taxes, but Queen Elizabeth II voluntarily agreed to pay income tax and capital gains tax on her private income and the Duchy estates in 1993. King Charles continues this practice.

I think there's room in this country for both monarchists and republicans to be visible and heard at Royal events- the fact that we can make room for both is one of the things I love about this country.

As an aside, Edwards VIII was more than a Nazi sympathiser, he was a traitor. While we were at war with Hitler he collaborated with him & the Nazis, and agreed to support a Nazi conquest of the UK in return for being placed back on the throne.

Your post is absurd.

Celebs have a choice. The royals don't.

I know someone who stands there booing.
She is also part of the Stop Oil Brigade and Palestine Action Group… and could Moan for England. If you were next to her at a party you would be getting the next taxi home.

They have a choice to marry a Royal? To have children?
They know what they’re getting into and chose to bring children into that. Sane difference.

I think they mean if you are born into the family…

This discussion has been conducted really well, which I appreciate. As you know the Sovereign Grant does not include the security for the RF. You have no idea what they cost without knowing that.

it costs millions. But no where near a billion.

MulberryBrandy · 15/06/2026 20:01

countrylife00 · 15/06/2026 19:52

The Sovereign Grant for 2025/2026 was 132
million. According to economists The Royal Family generated income of 1.8 billion.
You must be Rachel Reeves - about to cost us another crap load of money, suggesting to get rid of them.
Look at the broader picture.

If people want to boo, they’re allowed to. In the same way people are allowed to love the royals. People are entitled to their opinions.
The royals, much like celebs who parade their kids for all to see, had children and made a choice to expose them to the less favourable views that many people hold
i can’t get excited about people booing when their parents literally serve them up to it.
Kate has quite often got a face like a smacked arse but I can’t say I blame her

The monarchy is NOT a 'rotten institution' - you really shouldn't let your jealousy cloud your thoughts. I think they are great, and Saturday's parade just showed how good this country is at pageantry and events like these. Just look at how few people were 'protesting' compared with the huge, cheering crowds approaching Buckingham Palace!

And it brings in huge revenue to the economy through tourism.

countrylife00 · 15/06/2026 19:52

MulberryBrandy · 15/06/2026 19:44

The group we have been discussing, Republic: the total cost of the monarchy is about £510m a year.

I was largely indifferent to the monarchy until I visited Sandringham last week. There was something 'off' about the place, the indulgence and entitlement coupled with the almost 'reverent' way the guides referred to His Majesty, jarred with me. They live in such luxury at the expense of the taxpayer, despite Sandringham being their private residence, owned by them.

Agree
this matter went to court

Official Data: Following attempts by press organisations to obtain exact figures, UK courts have ruled that detailed royal security costs cannot be published, as transparency could compromise the safety of the Royal Family.

We either agree with our judicial system or we have to fight against it. It doesn’t seem anyone has on this account

( nevertheless even anti monarchists don’t estimate the figure to even touch the surface of the £££ generated )

Nofeckingway · 15/06/2026 15:37

The wealth that you are speaking of is a result of legacy and history . It's not like Charles can sell Buckingham Palace or the Gold Coach to fund anything else . The artefacts belong to the nation . The RF had nothing to do with Grenfell , blame the real culprits who were the developers and builders. As regards Xmas visits would you suggest that they snub the people who wanted to see them . These kids are being brought up to know that it is their duty to respect the traditions and try to be polite and respectful to other people . I think they were also aware that some people don't like the monarchy . What was Kate supposed to do but give an indication that she wasn't happy that her children were verbally abused . To be honest I would have loved Princess Ann to shout Naff Orf once again.

Charles is a billionaire through his private wealth, not the Crown Estate.

@BrownTroutBluesAgain One of the problems in establishing the exact financial burden that the Royal Family costs the taxpayer - secrecy.

In this day and age there should not be these cloak and dagger operations around the RF. The contents of their will are not disclosed - even quite minor royals.

We do not know how much their security costs as we are not allowed to know from the Met.

I posted how much the monarchy is deemed to generate upthread

It would be unwise to jump in and get rid of the monarchy on the back of a spurious claim that we will save money or indeed not lose any

Look at Brexit just for starters.
But if anyone has non biased proof ( and I’m guessing someone must have because this one is always thrown about on these threads ) to the contrary
then it would be an interesting read

Ps
Did you see that Versailles are losing money

Edited

Of note Versailles is at number 49 on the most visited places
and it’s not like people aren’t already in France anyway
Disneyland Paris and Notre Dame are way higher
🤷‍♀️

and as yet no one’s proved that it wouldn’t lose the country money

This is a completely ridiculous point.

The claim is that the Royals generate income through tourism, yet there is nothing to substantiate this claim whatsoever, and a fair bit to suggest the people themselves are entirely inconsequential.

For a start, it's accepted that the onus falls upon people making claims to substantiate them, not upon doubters to disprove, so to turn it around and ask Republicans to "prove" a Republic wouldn't lose money compared to the status quo, when advocates for the actual status quo can't even substantiate their own claims is palpably ridiculous.

The French disposed of their Royals hundreds of years back, and yet the Palace of Versailles is still one of the most visited tourist attractions on the planet. To my knowledge, people visiting Buckingham Palace do not get a personal meet & greet with a member of the family for simply turning up at the gate, so I see nothing which suggests we'd be any worse off for just doing away with the people and maintaining the buildings.

The DM was all over it this morning, but just held my nose and checked and looks like the royal PR team have been whipping things back into shape. Huge beaming pic of Kate now, no scowling to be seen. As you were.

Is This scowling or as one outlet online called it a ‘furious expression’
🤣

Op do you hate all rich people, or just the royal family?
If you do hate all rich people, which I suspect you do, at what income level or value of assets do you start to hate them?

Edited

I don’t mind if they have the same rules as the rest of us, but they don’t. If everyone could hand down wealth untaxed, we’d all be richer.

Who are the booers and why are they booing? Trooping the Colour is on one of our big traditions, attracting big crowds. Anyone who is not happy with it is free to fuck off

Im not happy with it so I will f off then. Fed up with the freeloaders and living a life without the problem of money/work/childcare etc
