AIBU to think this was well deserved?

Kate can glower at people as much as she wants but the monarchy is a rotten institution and people are getting more and more annoyed by it

They benefit massively? I disagree. They live a sheltered and materially privileged life, sure, but they also live in a goldfish bowl with disengaged, often absent parents and extremely reduced choices in life. I was watching George at QEII’s funeral and thinking how utterly abusive this system is towards a child in his position. He is a little boy with no life experience, and he knows exactly what he will grow up to be and do, what he will wear and how he will spend his time, right down to where his body will lie in state and where it will be buried. It must be stultifying and panic-inducing, frankly. Like sitting on your own coffin on the way to Tyburn.

The whole culture and system of royalty is diseased. No wonder that family consistently produces damaged people with severe emotional problems.

Absolutely agree. I said upthread that I dont feel royal life is fair to the people within it either - you can see the damage it does. I guess it is a blessing if the occupants of the positions are a bit thick and cant imagine any other way of life - for someone with a lively brain, it must be horrendous.

I feel sympathy in a way, because they’ve been used as shields by their family. But they benefit massively.

No, don’t assume it’s all violent and evil in a state school yet lovely and supportive in private.

I’m not saying it is - obviously there is bullying in all sectors unfortunately. However there are more likely to be very anti monarchist views at state school for which he would be an easy target.
Personally I think sneering at people for their class, whether up or down, is cowardly and pointless - but people do it.

perlana · 16/06/2026 19:18

I'd love if George climbed out the window and escaped Eton with some of his equally majestic/posh mates. That'd be an education for them, surviving out in the English countryside without Royal Funds to prop him up. Character forming.

As pp said, his education is only for life experience, and I doubt he will get REAL life experience in the hallowed halls of Eton. His A level results won't matter, because he doesn't need them to be King does he, and his future is guaranteed. Poor sod.

A state school. Genuinely, a state school, like politicians do.

My God, can you imagine the bullying he’d get.
Have you read the comments on here - and elsewhere - about how ghastly the monarchy, why don’t they just go, the Russian and French revolutionaries had the right idea etc.
Children would hear their parents talking like that and take it out on George.
Or maybe you think a bit of bullying would do him good and take him down a peg or two.

No, don’t assume it’s all violent and evil in a state school yet lovely and supportive in private (let’s face it, his mother was bullied in at her first very expensive school, which failed to deal with it and she had to move).

Obviously they’ve missed their window and should have sent in at year 7, when he could have potentially been just one of the new children, in the same way the prime minsters over the years have sent their dcs to state schools and trusted their choices didn’t lead to bullying.

it would have signalled a more modern approach, but for all the spin and “Kensington palace insiders” commenting that William wants to modernise things, he’s really not showing that with the way he lives and works.

(it is a pity, I had high hopes when William was young.)

A state school. Genuinely, a state school, like politicians do. Even if they themselves went to the top boarding schools, all the cabinet and shadow cabinet take the same position, their dcs go to state schools. (It’s been news worthy for the few who didn’t, even when we had the cabinet full of Eaton and Westminster old boys.)

George will have the same job if he gets straight 9s or a mixture of 6s and 7s, the quality of his education really won’t make any difference to his future prospects.

Obviously they never would, William really has no interest in a more modern monarchy and that would be shockingly unthinkable for him to do, whereas if you read the Swedish royals were sending their children to a local state school you’d just think “yep, sounds about right.”

Unfortunately it most probably cheaper to send him to Eaton for his own safety!

@MrsShawnHatosy
It’s been announced that Prince George will attend Eton in September, which doesn’t help with the public perception of them being overprivileged

Which school would’ve helped the public perception of them being over privileged?

Agree
or indeed
Why Bother, the public can and do think whatever they like irrespective of what people with more money than them do.

A lot of people are done with the kowtowing to people whose only qualification is to be born posher or richer than them.
About time too.

Yes, I think this is right on the one hand. And on the other, I also do not wish to see the younger royals (George and siblings) put into those uncomfortable meet and greet sessions after the church service. They should be free of the obligation that has been put on them.

Perpetuating this ancient feudal system doesn't look or feel right.

JuliettaCaeser · 16/06/2026 11:59

I think I agree. I met Camilla she’s a perfectly normal posh horsey lady. Why is she any different to anyone else?! A queen?! It’s mental if you think about it.

I’m not sure your point stands up to scrutiny as a comparison.

Surely it’s all the same to the animals whether it’s being done for sport or commercial gain.

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 16/06/2026 11:34

@theresalighttofindyou , the far left are disgusting, pathetic creatures. I am not in favour of the monarchy actually and if there were a referendum I would vote for change but I accept (and you are very wrong in this respect but the far left always believe that everyone who disagrees with them is wrong as opposed to having a different opinion) that the vast majority of people in this country would not wish to see an end to the monarchy, it’s called democracy another concept the far left aren’t in tune with. 🙄

I don’t eat animals so you’re not making much of a point if that was a try.

Not really - so much emphasis is put on hunting rather than the other ways creatures are mistreated for human benefit.

Hunting is a special kind of nasty, it’s done for enjoyment. No, I don’t like factory farming, but the purpose is not the pleasure of making the animals suffer. Barbaric as some dairy farming practices are, the farmers I know, love their cows. I’m not sure your point stands up to scrutiny as a comparison.

Apologies, I misunderstood.

I started marching under the
Meat is Murder campaign back in 1983 ( ish ) when I was deemed old enough by my parents to go to London on my own and stay over with members of the Vegetarian Soc
( don’t think there was a big Vegan society campaigning in those days, they didn’t have a mag anyway )

So no. I’m not selective
( I just mentioned fox hunting because of the campaign to stop trail hunting. )

These spoilt ridiculously overpriviledged useless people need to realise there is a price to be paid, no such thing as a "free lunch". They live lives of ludicrous luxury purely because of birth, they are not special, talented or clever, in fact quite the opposite, so they need to get used o the idea that not all of us support them. If the worst thing that happens to them is a bit of booing they need to count their blessings tbh.

BrownTroutBluesAgain · 16/06/2026 10:09

38thparallel · 16/06/2026 08:36

I would happily boo the fox hunting brigade for example

@BrownTroutBluesAgain would you boo pheasant shooters? Fisherfolk? Or what about salmon farmers?

Obviously
Buckingham palace costs a lot to run
They are upgrading so it won’t cost so much
Once the works are completed they don’t need so much money because it won’t cost so much to run and they won’t have to pay for constant construction works

The total cost of the Buckingham Palace upgrade is £369 million. The 10-year reservicing programme—which runs from 2017 to 2027—is funded by a temporary increase in the Sovereign Grant, originating from the profits of the Crown Estate.
The extensive project focuses on critical infrastructure updates to prevent catastrophic building failures specifically

Im not sure there’s a point to make here. The grant was increased to do the works and after it will be reduced. Labour can’t be seen as the good guys for being the first ones to reduce it as there was an increase in the first place

Of note Mulberry

Labour weren't in power in 2017
This was a conservative agreement with the RF

BrownTroutBluesAgain · 15/06/2026 23:35

MulberryBrandy · 15/06/2026 22:43

The Labour government are set on doing something 'specific':

It is committed to bringing forward legislation to reset the Sovereign Grant to a lower level from 2027-28 once Buckingham Palace reservicing works are completed

So the funds could soon be reduced for the first time.

No, you sound in denial. Unless you get a kick out of being thought of as a peasant. We shan't judge you if so.
