AIBU to dress up to match my son for his prom?

Hi there. My son has his high school prom coming up next month as he's 16 and doing his GCSEs at the moment. He's chosen his outfit choices and I've purchased both suits that he liked so he has a choice. He's gone for purple suits which are lovely. I've also purchased myself a lovely purple dress and some nice shoes so that he can have some lovely mum and son photos taken on his special night. I showed them to my partner and all he has said is that they're nice and will look great but why am I making such an effort when it's not even my night? He says it's silly and isn't necessary. He thinks I'm overdoing it on the effort for a night that isn't for me. Is it really unreasonable to want to make the effort or is he just being unnecessarily mean

It's far too Posh Spice/Brooklyn for me.

Please promise us you're not planning to dance at any point?

murasaki · 13/06/2026 16:53

I'm getting Beverly from the Goldbergs vibes. The ultimate smother.

AnxiousPixie · 13/06/2026 16:51

I love the posts where someone asks if they are being unreasonable (presumably they wouldn't even be asking the question if they weren't questioning a bit) and then disagrees with everyone! Why ask for an opinion if you are so certain what your are doing is right??

Do what you and your son want OP. I think it's batshit but then who cares what I think!

catmothertes1 · 13/06/2026 16:51

Sounds like a scene from an American film!

Moira is the only person (character) in the world who could get away with this kind of behaviour 😂

I don’t think I’ve ever seen mn so united yet the op still thinks she’s right.

United on BS.

I know its AIBU but the indignation is funny. Perhaps its a humour thing, but I just don't get the comments.

OP, I would now get a purple headpiece and lay some purple carpet.

Hmmm. Reminds me of a mum that wore a full length white wedding dress to her Dd's First Communion.
Let your son have his prom night without you going the whole hog.

Tableforjoan · 13/06/2026 16:49

What was Raymond’s mum in everyone loves Raymond called again 😂😂

Pinepeak2434 · 13/06/2026 16:49

I don’t think I even have a photo with my son on his prom day, I took a few photos of him in his suit, but he was far too busy getting ready then rushed off to enjoy himself with friends.

Yes it's weird.
You're his mother not his date.

This!! My two DSs would have hit the roof - rightly - if i’d bought a dress to match their suit!!

amber763 · 13/06/2026 16:48

Youre getting a really hard time here and of course theres nothing wrong with wanting a nice photograph with your kid. The thing is the going out and buying a dress to go with his suit and getting all dressed up. Its too much and your partner is right that its your sons night. Just take the dress back and get some photos in your normal clothes before he goes

If you want him to disown you, truly awful, make it about him, don’t steal the attention.

NewGirlInTown · 13/06/2026 16:47

OP’s replies are goady as fuck and are only providing responses to irrelevant points.
You’ve been caught out, OP, as being an attention seeking nincompoop now settle down, take the dress back, and never speak of this nonsense again.

Hihosilver123 · 13/06/2026 16:47

Just no. Certainly dress up nicely, but not a matching dress #cringe

Or Moira Rose from Schitt's Creek...😆

JayJayj · 13/06/2026 16:44

You can dress up nice, we did for my nieces prom, for photos. But don’t do matching. It’s a bit main character syndrome.

ComfyKnickers · 13/06/2026 16:44

Aren't you worried about his friends laughing at him (you)?

Magdrink · 13/06/2026 16:42

What is your partner’s relationship like with your son @MissRaspberryRipples ?

OMGitsnotgood · 13/06/2026 16:42

I think that is weird sorry

Anastasiaa · 13/06/2026 16:42

WyrdHag · 13/06/2026 14:47

Is your name Victoria?!

Are you going to ‘dance on him’ @MissRaspberryRipples?

lunar1 · 13/06/2026 16:42

Please don’t, by all means look nice, but not in a dress, especially not one that’s coordinated with his suit.

get a lovely picture of yourself on prom night before he goes of you and your son, not a creepy one that will make literally everyone ask WTF!

141mum · 13/06/2026 16:41

Sirzy · 13/06/2026 14:40

Each to their own but to me that screams of making it about yourself rather than him

My DD graduated last year, her gown was black with red trim, I wore a black top with red in it, so we matched,

FleshLiabilities · 13/06/2026 16:39

Beverly Goldberg, is that you?

Or Moira Rose from Schitt's Creek...😆

UnderMirkwood · 13/06/2026 16:41

I think you should do it Op (I mean, you are obviously going to), but I think your DP should be more supportive and also wear a purple outfit. I think you should have photos done with all three of you in your matching outfits with your son modelling each of his purple suits. I also think your son should wear one suit to the prom and then change into the second suit for the second half of the prom.

You're welcome.
