Ask next door neighbours to take their bins out before 11pm?

i suspect I probably am being unreasonable but wanted peoples thoughts on whether I should make a friendly request to my neighbours..
they seem to wait until gone 11pm each week to drag their bins down the alleyway between our terraced houses. The issue is (and I think this is where I’m being unreasonable) is that it makes my dogs bark because it’s quite loud and that wakes me and my kids up.

i guess the solution would be to somehow train my dogs not to bark but I A - don’t know how and B - kind of want them to alert me to something that sounds so close to the house.
They’re not particularly barky dogs in general.
we’re on good terms, would I seem like a complete arse if I just asked them if there’s any way they could but their bins out any earlier? They have two primary aged kids so I assume they wait until they are in bed etc

It is pretty anti social dragging bins down an alleyway at 11pm.

Fibrous · 12/06/2026 08:02

I don’t think you’re unreasonable. We live in a terrace and have to drag our bins out the ginnel. We make sure to do it before our neighbours kids go to bed, or first thing in the morning, as otherwise it would wake them. It’s just a neighbourly thing to do in a set of terraces. If the roles were reversed, I’m sure they’d do the same for us.

Yep, they 100% do their bins when it suits them, why wouldn’t they! I also don’t say it’s their fault my dogs bark.
i wouldn’t mind at all someone approaching me about this the more I think about it.

Well the go crazy enough to wake your whole house up, is that not your issue? Your OP claimed the bins make your dogs bark and that wakes you and your kids up.
So you can’t claim the bin you don’t hear is so awfully noisy but your dogs barking aren’t the noisy issue.

I imagine they do their bins when it suits them, they could be getting back later from their job.
It’s really not their fault your dogs go crazy and wake your whole house up.

Also, just to be clear my dogs don’t ’go Crazy’ they do a few warning barks

If they are nice, there isn't any harm asking in a polite apologetic way, as it is your dogs causing your issue.

I certainly wouldn't hesitate to try and accommodate a neighbour if they asked.
Sleep is so precious.

My neighbour puts bins out at 6am, and it wakes me every single time. We live quite near a main road, and the noise it makes is much louder. I think it’s really selfish, but I have never said anything.

wheelie bins are really noisy aren’t they! A few people on here don’t seem to think they are. For context, my bedroom is on the other side of the house (mid size 3 bedroom) and can hear the bin rattling down the passage

If you are friendly with your neighbours, next time you bump into them I’d say “I hope my dogs aren’t causing noise issue for you guys. One of them is a bit reactive and barks more than the other. It seems to be especially triggered (cue 🙄 and 😂) by bins being moved. I really hope it’s not disturbing you guys at other times. Would you mind if I put all of our bins out for the time being while I work on training? Perhaps the dog will tolerate it better if it knows it’s me moving them on a weekly basis”.

Our neighbour and I “fight” over who gets to the bin honours every week cause we like being helpful and returning the favour. How could anyone mind being helped with a boring job? 😃

Haha I really like this idea
re taking their bins out, I’d happily do that but bins are in the back garden behind a locked gate, we always wheel each others back to the house from the pavement once they’ve been emptied but no opportunity really to take them out for them

I think someone suggested earlier framing it as a favour to you is the best way to ask. It is really not that big a deal.

OuEstLaPlage · 12/06/2026 07:37

I’d ask - nicely. If you’re terraced you could say that you’re worried the dogs will wake others up. Be clear that it’s not a big issue for you - they may be very happy to move the time.

IwanttoWFH · 12/06/2026 07:21

I don’t think you’re unreasonable to ask. Rolling wheelie bins out is noisy and 11pm is very late. The majority of people would be asleep by this time. I put my bins out as soon as I get home from work (so, about 5.30pm).
I can hear our neighbours putting theirs out and it sounds like very loud thunder! (Luckily, they put theirs out at a reasonable hour). Dogs or no dogs, I think it’s inconsiderate behaviour.

DidntLikeTheEnding · 12/06/2026 07:09

Put a muzzle on your barking dog on bin night.

MandemChickenShop · 12/06/2026 07:06

People can put their bins out whenever they want, as long as they aren't being deliberately noisy or anything like that.

Allders · 12/06/2026 06:59

I’d definitely ask! It’s way too late to put your bins out, they’re being inconsiderate and your dogs are behaving sensibly! I hope they stop doing it, otherwise it’s ear plugs for you. Annoying!

weirdoexincident · 12/06/2026 06:58

I put my neighbours bins out, along with my own. Solves all problems, without inconveniencing anyone.

JumpingRabbit · 12/06/2026 06:56

I would definitely politely ask. I wouldn’t be over joyed at the neighbours dragging bins about after 11pm without dogs barking. Fine as a one off but I’d mention it if it was every week.

GreatOffWhiteFalcon · 12/06/2026 06:49

I would look out for an opportunity to move your own bin when the neighbour is around and say 'these bins do make a racket on the cobbles don't they, actually I have been meaning to ask if you could possibly move yours earlier in the evening because we sometimes get woken up by flipping Rover barking when he hears yours.'

youalright · 12/06/2026 06:04

I live in a similar set up to you and it is loud when people drag their bins from the back to the front. Luckily everyone round here does do it early. Its a difficult situation because if a neighbour asked me if I could do my bins earlier I would have no issues with it as it would be something I genuinely wouldn't of put much thought into until someone told me it was causing them issues. However its not something I'd personally ask a neighbour to do as it knid of feels like your telling them what to do in their own house

Magsbd · 12/06/2026 05:59

I think 11pm is a ridiculous time to create noise by wheeling out bins. So if it’s wakening you up you should let them know.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 12/06/2026 05:19

They should take care not to make unreasonable noise doing that so late, but you do need to teach your dogs not to go crazy over it as well.

3beesinmybonnet · 12/06/2026 00:44

I occasionally forget to put my bin out till late and tbh I then wheel it very slowly so it doesn't clonk on each flag, and then shut the rusty catch on the gate as quietly as possible whilst cringing with embarrassment. We're retired so have all day to put our bin out. I suppose it depends if your neighbours are able to put their bins out earlier.
IMHO your dogs are just doing their job. I would suggest -

Leave the radio playing in their room overnight so they don't notice the noise.

Earplugs for you

Let the dogs sleep on your bed - a quick shhh and straight back to sleep, and they'll soon learn to ignore it.

Cedricsmum · 12/06/2026 00:41

Your dogs are not their problem really 🙄
