Ask next door neighbours to take their bins out before 11pm?

i suspect I probably am being unreasonable but wanted peoples thoughts on whether I should make a friendly request to my neighbours..
they seem to wait until gone 11pm each week to drag their bins down the alleyway between our terraced houses. The issue is (and I think this is where I’m being unreasonable) is that it makes my dogs bark because it’s quite loud and that wakes me and my kids up.

i guess the solution would be to somehow train my dogs not to bark but I A - don’t know how and B - kind of want them to alert me to something that sounds so close to the house.
They’re not particularly barky dogs in general.
we’re on good terms, would I seem like a complete arse if I just asked them if there’s any way they could but their bins out any earlier? They have two primary aged kids so I assume they wait until they are in bed etc

You could ask but they don’t have to oblige.

We put our bins out late and wouldn’t change this if a neighbour asked. I’d suggest taking the dog to training classes for the barking or training them yourself to recognise the sound of a bin.

I’d be nice about it and not take offence to the suggestion though. It depends how awkward you’d feel to them saying no.

They are home from about 4pm
it might be a case that they have some reason to do it that I’m not aware of

We're not 11pm but we put ours out once we've finished the clear up at the end of the day, so that ALL the rubbish, including that from any snacks/treats we've had of an evening, go in the bin and isn't hanging around for another week. It's likely 11pm is just before bed, so they're chucking the last few bits in, and taking them out while letting the dogs out for last wee.

Thanks, that’s useful re the training. The dog who barks was terrible when we got her so I’ve worked hard to reduce it a lot, for instance I don’t let them bark in the garden despite other dog barking at them through the fence so they do have a pretty high tolerance before they retaliate but they know as soon I hear them bark in the garden they have to go at straight back in the house.

Get someone to wheel your bins up and down to do this training with them. Shouldn't take more than a few days if you're consistent with it.

Could you offer to put it out earlier for them to save them the inconvenience?

That’s what i do. It’s better for you, and for them: someone’s sorting the bins out for you.

That’s a win-win.

Way too late. Yanbu

so people on shift work can’t ever take their bins out?

lottiegarbanzo · 12/06/2026 08:45

FGS just talk to them, why wouldn’t you? This is a normal, neighbourly conversation.

saraclara · 12/06/2026 08:43

I wouldn't even mention the dog. Simply ask if they could do you a big favour and put their bin out a little earlier, as the noise is amplified by the alleyway and it wakes you up.
Plenty of people go to bed around 10pm and don't want to be woken up later an hour.

Yabu, some people work late - we can’t put ours out before 6pm here so ours are pub out at 10.30pm when we get in as out that day from 5pm!

Ignore the posts about needing to train your dogs not to bark. You don't train your dog to go against their protective instincts. Curbing the barking, yes, within reason.

Yeah, I’m a single parent so kind of want the dogs to do their job on that front tbh 😬

RandomMess · 12/06/2026 08:41

I think it’s ridiculous that people don’t think you can ask! It’s 11pm it will be very noisy echoing through the alley way. Of course the dogs will alert bark at something happening late at night when it’s quiet once per week.

Obviously if they can’t do it earlier for some reason you will accept it with good grace.

Or the other way is asking if they can help training the dog not to bark with some exposure therapy of them wheeling the bin up and down lots every evening for a while 🤣

Nowthatshuge · 12/06/2026 07:56

Also, just to be clear my dogs don’t ’go Crazy’ they do a few warning barks

hahabahbag · 12/06/2026 08:38

Oh and our bin men comes from about 6am especially in summer so you are told they must be put out between 6pm and 6am to guarantee collection

daffodilandtulip · 12/06/2026 08:38

The next street is terraced so they all use the back to wheel their bins down. Some do it at midnight and some start as early as 4:30am. Drives me up the wall. It is loud! And for some, the length of the street, at 5am seems a very long time.

wherearethesnacks · 12/06/2026 08:36

My neighbour wakes me up at 6.30 am putting his bins out. Drives me mad. I lose two hours sleep and feel groggy all day. No dogs involved.

hahabahbag · 12/06/2026 08:35

Are you just not allowed to have your bins collected if you work until 10pm? They wouldn’t be allowed to put their bin out in the morning either according to other posters.

I would put mine out in the morning in this scenario. I’ve never know putting bins out early to be enforced. When we go on holiday we put ours out two days early.

SlightFerret · 12/06/2026 08:34

Yanbu, I've been woken up by bins being dragged about before. Have a friendly chat and ask.

Getmeacoffeenow · 12/06/2026 08:33

Do you need to mention the dogs? I would say that it wakes you up!!

In the summer with the windows open it would wake me up. It’s anti-social.

Oh my word this thread is wild! It’s so English/uk!! Just ask them?? I’m sure you’d do it in a nice way, and say your dogs are the problem, but that this is what happens. You could see if there’s a solution that’s more convenient for them like they earlier put it just outside the locked gate and then you drag it out when you drag yours. This to me shouldn’t be some kind of people being unreasonable/reasonable drama. It’s just a conversation about shared living spaces / noise / garden fences / parking etc. It just needs discussing, and as long as you make it clear they’re not being unreasonable but that your dog barking is the issue, but this is the trigger for them so is there a way around it? then in my view that’s perfectly adult and fine. If there isn’t some kind of easy win then it’s a case of putting up with the barking. I don’t know why ppl are so hesitant to discuss these things in Britain and just put up with it for years.

I had an American neighbour and she went to my mum asking “when the (English) neighbours say to me “it’s so lovely that your son rides his trike with his dad to the end of the street every day at 7am”, are they saying that’s annoying?” Mum said yes. She said “why don’t they just say, “would you mind not riding the trike at 7 because it wakes me up”.” I’m so in agreement with her! So much unnecessary angst vecause we are afraid of speaking about anything other than the bloody weather!! I don’t think having a conversation is unreasonable OP.

Hahaha you’re absolutely right. I think I’m such a people pleaser I’m scared they might think I’m demanding something. In most areas of my life I’m known for being straight talking so don’t know why neighbours bin habits are causing me so much pain to broach 😂

I agree that 11 p m is too late to put out bins except on the rare occasion if somebody has forgotten or gets home late. But when you can't even go out your house without setting of a dog barking it's very annoying. This is the problem not the bins.

They absolutely can go out of their house / in their garden etc without setting my dog off. Their dog barks more than mine really. It’s just very loud along the whole side of the house bringing the bins round at that time.

It is pretty anti social dragging bins down an alleyway at 11pm.

Deadringer · 12/06/2026 08:08

I think there is no harm asking if you are polite about it and accept it if they say no. I would change my routine within reason if my neighbours had a good reason for asking.

LuckyHazelFox · 12/06/2026 08:08

It's too late to be doing it anyway, regardless of the dogs.
