Is my bathroom wall art ‘tacky’

Please settle a light hearted disagreement…Hubster says the new photo/poster I’ve put up in the downstairs loo will be considered ‘tacky’ by any visitors.

It’s the Mona Lisa but she’s holding her nose - you can see it on Google.

YABU - I agree with your Hubster
YANBU - it’s harmless

We visited a cafe near Applecross in Wester Ross in the Highlands, there was a sign on the loo wall listing the things not to be flushed down the loo, ending with “Hopes and dreams”. I liked that.

Ofcourse it's not normal. But that's just the point; his odeur is not normal. And he has done a coloscopy and got checked out from top to toe - very health anxious- and nothing is physically wrong with him. As for diet I eat way more garlic, onions and vegetables than he does but I don't eat meat. Maybe it's the meat? But my sons eat meat as well.

Anyway, I agree with you that it isn't normal but extreme situations call for extreme meausures. My sons can't stand his smell either, neither can his mum so it's not me being difficult. I had a friend over once and she almost fainted when she walked in the door (toilet close to entrance). And he does use bleach and spray after- it's just fucking impossible to hide. I've told him that he should contact the MI5 if they need some help with getting suspects talking..

Edited for honesty; it's not every single time but roughly 6 times out of 10 so bad enough. And ge goes everyday so I don't want to bet on this being a harmless one.

Edited

I get that the pong is probably difficult to abide in his case, but I feel really sorry for your DH, as that's his life and he can't change it. You might as well make him wear a bell around his neck and shout "Unclean" when he comes near.

He’s accepted it’s staying..he gets little say in decor options, not that he’s usually interested. He gets to decide on the more manly decisions around DIY etc.

It's not for me, but the general rule in our house is that I have what I want, cos the husband doesn't care. BUT, if he has an objection to something (or REALLY wants something), then he gets to say that and (usually, there's the odd occasion I love more than he hates) we go with his choice.

99% of the time I get exactly what I want, house decor wise, so I have no objections to deferring to his preference when he expresses it.

Hubster???
even worse than holibobs and picky bits/tea

Calliopespa · 12/06/2026 08:17

Slight derail but if this is an ongoing issue and not just an occasional incident after a very garlicky meal or similar, do you think he should get checked out?

I'm not really sure having our own formula of "odeur" such that family ban us from their loos is normal is it?

I wouldn't want to look at this every day but if it gives you pleasure and makes you smile, then go for it.

For me, the joke would wear thin after the first time I looked at it. I want stuff on the walls which I love and never get bored of.

Monty36 · 12/06/2026 08:37

Yes. Don’t hang it in your loo.

Calliopespa · 12/06/2026 08:20

Someone was posting the other day that they had a stuffed dead mouse on a cross with the caption "Cheesus" and not everyone thought that was tacky. The op found it hilarious.

I think this is pretty inoffensive in comparison: it isn't disrespectful of anyone's religion, there is no "cheesy" wordplay, and, most importantly, no mice were harmed.

Anarchy99 · 12/06/2026 08:17

Yes it’s tacky, but so is ‘hubster’ so it’s all good,

Do you have ‘Live Laugh Love’ on the living room wall as well?

Calliopespa · 12/06/2026 08:17

TheBlueKoala · 12/06/2026 07:27

You haven't smelt dhs odeur. And I got two teen sons and it's not even close. Even his mum tells him not to have a dump at her place.

Malasana · 12/06/2026 08:16

Do you like it? If you do it doesn’t matter what anyone on here says. In any case none of us is likely to be needing to use your loo. If it makes you smile then who cares if strangers on a discussion forum think it’s tacky.

Stoneycold12 · 11/06/2026 23:19

It's absolutely not pop art - here's a quote from a quick search 'The style often used humor and detachment to comment on postwar consumerism and celebrity obsession.'

'Poos are smelly' isn't really that humorous once you're over 8.

In fairness, if the op had posted that she had found a print that simply said "Poos are smelly," she probably would have had a completely different response. That really would not be funny.

The joke here is that at first glance it looks like a familiar art work. On second glance you notice the nose hold, have a split second of asking yourself why, then realise you are in a toilet, you are the "butt" of a joke in which the Mona Lisa seems to be interacting with you at a moment of a certain lack of dignity.

I mean it still isn't hilarious imo, but there are layers that simply would not exist with a sign that simply said: "Poos are smelly."

The best thing about this thread is the unanimous outrage at ‘hubster’ 😆

It's such a tacky way to refer to one's hubalub.

dancehysterical22 · 12/06/2026 08:07

Kelzzinsouth · 11/06/2026 18:50

I refuse to use the sickly ‘D’ reference!

How about husband?

JeremiaBoogle · 12/06/2026 07:59

@Kelzzinsouth I think you need to step it up a bit, just for your husband.

Get a normal Mono Lisa print (same size) and two matching frames. Put the normal one on the outside of the toilet door and the pinching nose one on the inside of the door. 😃

Doesn't really matter what others think of it. It's your home and it's a harmless picture. People have such a widely varied tasted you'd never find anything everyone likes or find amusing. I'd have thought most people wouldn't be pass much thought on it after they left the room, even if they dislike it. Those that don't are just the judgemental type, so will have unimportant opinions on everything. You can't do anything about them.

Though I do think your husband should actually like the decorations in his house too. Does he dislike the picture or is he just concerned what others think?

TheLoneliestSnail · 12/06/2026 07:47

Of course it’s tacky.
What other way could it be described? It’s not sophisticated is it.

Boomer55 · 12/06/2026 07:30

Hubster? 🙄

TheBlueKoala · 12/06/2026 07:27

Namechangeforthisdilemma1 · 11/06/2026 23:46

Gosh, imagine someone dictating to you where you can poo on your own home?!

You haven't smelt dhs odeur. And I got two teen sons and it's not even close. Even his mum tells him not to have a dump at her place.

pictoosh · 12/06/2026 06:57

Are we still jumping on hubby and hubster and insulting people over it?
I thought that was passé now and we'd moved on to taking swipes at something else harmless and inconsequential.

ToyStory75 · 12/06/2026 06:08

Poster - tacky.
Hubster - 🤢🤢🤢

WhatTheHellsGoingOn · 12/06/2026 03:26

weeat · 11/06/2026 18:45

I’m not too sure I’d find it funny OP. Mostly folk will just be going for a pee?? and in that case are you commenting on the woman’s anatomy(?!) Maybe for a kiddies loo as it’d be a funny thing for kids. ☺️

Does women’s wee smell worse than men’s? Sorry I don’t get the anatomy reference?🤔

DoAWheelie · 12/06/2026 01:19

It is tacky, but life is too short to not do harmless things that bring you joy for fear of other people's opinions.

I have some truly tacky duvet and pillow covers but they make me happy so I don't care what anyone else thinks about them. This week it's the dinosaur set, next week is magical kittens.

Tribecka · 12/06/2026 01:16

Not my taste but not my house either, so there you go.

I’d be more deeply concerned about the use of the phrase “hubster”.
