I’m Scottish, now living in England with my English husband and our two England‑born children.

My Scottish family have always held tightly to tradition, cultural pride, and the preservation of Scottish heritage — something I don’t see reflected in the same way here in England.

English culture expresses tradition differently. It’s more subtle, less tied to national identity, and varies a lot from region to region.

From what I’ve seen, many English people don’t grow up with a strong sense of national heritage unless they actively look for it, and I’ve rarely met anyone who has.

Meanwhile, the Tartan Army continues to show the world what Scottish pride looks like — passionate, united, and unforgettable. Win, lose, or draw, we support our country with everything we’ve got.

I’ll always support both Scotland and England, but the level of national pride Scotland carries is something England simply doesn’t share in the same way.

I don't think she's obliged to support England even if she's chosen to live there. That's up to her, and nobody really cares. But going out of her way to let everyone know she's 'anyone but England' is juvenile and attention seeking.

There are millions of us from de-industrialised areas that suffered mass unemployment in the 80’s/90’s . The majority of us who follow the football will be rooting for our national team.. England.

I am not interested in football, but I do wish our national team the best. I think your attitude is churlish, OP. You live and work in England. You can support whatever country you come from, of course, but it’s a bit mean spirited not to also support the place where you live as well. You can support both. To hope Scotland do well - that is fine, but to say you support Scotland and not England, well, like I say, churlish, silly and creating an atmosphere in the office just for the sake of being contrary. An irritating personality trait.

It’s not just about the docks though for us! they literally wanted the whole city evacuated and effectively closed down.

Haha I'm not from here but I became a British citizen a couple of months ago. I'm supporting England and Scotland. 😁 I'm not that fussed overall but it's good fun.

I don’t support any team as I have no interest in football. Also, my support or non support has no impact whatsoever on the outcome of any game, so it affects no one.

I live in a dock area. Nobody gave a shit about that either. Still don't think it means being anti English. Anti Westminster is more understandable.

But do you absolutely hate Hull city and all the people living there whilst you live there? That is the difference. Not a Hull supporter but nice to see them promoted.

I'm footy mad. I still support my childhood team, Liverpool. That's where I was born and grew up. I have lived in Hull for a long time now but I don't support Hull City. I am always delighted to see them doing well, it's just so good for the city but my loyalties remain with LFC. Can't see how OP is any different to me.

I’m Scottish, kids are half English living in Scotland. They’re probably Scotland first but will switch allegiance to England when Scotland invariably get knocked out after the group stage. They’re not massively fussed though. I can’t bring myself to support England, despite having a lovely English DH. Feels intrinsically wrong.

My love for the Scotland team has waned over the years, I can’t seem to get that enthusiastic about them. I’m happy that they’re there, but not to the point of staying up to 4am! The whole Tartan Army bollocks pisses me off. I don’t care what flag you’re waving, large groups of pissed up (mostly) blokes taking over public spaces is never good.

Google the dockers strikes there’s a lot off content about them. My grandad was one of the main the union men in the 80’s and 90’s fighting to save the docks

Meh, we support England. But if they ever get knocked out we support Wales (DH grandparents country) and then Scotland (My GGrandparents). I’d support those over say Japan when I lived there because it’s just natural to us.

Yeah so they basically wanted to us to close down- the idea was everyone would move away and Liverpool would cease to become a city and just be swallowed up by the areas around it.

So why do other Northern towns in England not do the same? They had just as much right as Liverpool to hate Thatcher. They have been treated just as badly. My place was a major fishing city. Still aren't anti English. It is just tiresome. Many of them also had plenty of Irish settling there. Leeds springs to mind.
