Live and work in England. Not English. My team didn’t qualify for the World Cup so I’m supporting Scotland! Lobe a plucky underdog, have some Scots heritage ( and some English to be fair) plus I NEVER support English sports teams. EVER. Football has inevitably come up in the office and several colleagues are generally pissed off that I’m not supporting England, insist I should be etc etc. Stupidly I mentioned that I never support England … did not gone down well. If you live here then you should etc etc YANBU - support who you like! YABU - you ingrate, you live in the country you should support the national team.

Posters need to calm down, imagine being so ridiculously sensitive. It's nonsense and means nothing. It's most common in a house (like mine) or a group of friends containing an English person. Obviously we like the people!

This is weird because I feel like I have more in common with the Irish than I do the French. We are so similar. We get the sense of humour etc.

How?

If your default position is 'anyone but England' - not just in football but in all sports - how is this not indicative of a dislike of England? If someone had a policy of cheering for any team playing Ireland, simply because they were playing Ireland, would you consider that person to be neutral towards Ireland as a country?

Who knows? We know nothing about the OP's country other than that they're shit at football.

A common tactic on these boards is for an OP to be coy about their country of origin while slagging off Britain/England. It's quite tedious.

I think it’s perfectly reasonable not to support England if you are supporting your country of origin instead.

However, given that they are not playing, it does seem odd to me that you wouldn’t support England instead, given that you have chosen to live here.

I’m not particularly a fan of cricket, but if it comes up I support Somerset, which is where I was born and brought up, rather than Surrey, which is where I have lived for over 25 years. In a match between Surrey and any county other than Somerset, I would support Surrey!

This thread made me think about that book earlier (first time in years).
I think the line when (spolier) Ireland get knocked out was something like -
"And that was the end of that"

There's a brilliant Irish comedy trio (Foil, Hog and something??) that did a sketch about who to support in the football if you're Irish but Ireland aren't playing. So funny.
Worth finding it online.
Edit: While googling for the sketch I see they've made a new one for this year. I will watch later.

You seem to be obsessive over the word hate. I don’t mean as a “real world” hatred of course it’s just a turn of phrase, I support Man Utd and over the course of the season I’ll throw out that I hate City, especially when they are doing well but I’ve loads of friends and family members who support City & we all love each other (and they will say they hate United too) we will banter and wind each other up all part of enjoying rivalry. it’s honestly just not that deep like I’ve already tried to say.

Still trying to work out what the problem is 🤷🏼‍♀️
