Is England’s World Cup entitlement unique, or common in other countries?

Do other countries have the same sense of entitlement to winning the World Cup as we do? All this 30, now 60, years of hurt thing, all the comments about how useless England are, that's gone on for as long as I can remember, how rubbish the managers are etc.

I've never researched it but we can't be the only country to have only won one, or zero World Cups.

Is it unique to England? Or our supporters, I doubt the team has the same sense of entitlement.

These people always (conveniently) overlook the arrogance of other international teams. Argentina and Brazil being right up there.

Argentina were an embarrassment.

I think English sporting entitlement it is something that a lot of people want to believe in rather than there actually being any because it fits their world view.

Yes, England fans and the press have high expectations. That is due to recent success, being close to winning major tournaments but not quite getting over the line, and also the success of the Premier League and how well the squad have done for their clubs. And our country gets very excited and passionate about football. And there is the inevitable post-mortem when things go wrong.

But I don't think passion and high expectations, and ultimate disappointment is the same as entitlement.

That kind of talk is usually from the same people who talk as if we were the only ones to ever have an empire, participate in slavery and feel that we have some inherited cross to bear from history.

Did you not see videos from other countries celebrating when they won games in the early stages? They made England’s look very low scale, and those countries didn’t even get as far as we did.

He plays IN Spain. He doesn't play for them.

Messi plays in Miami now, I think he left Barcelona a while ago

Why is Messi hated in Argentina ? Because he plays for Spain ?

They saw him as Spanish as he has never played for a team in Argentina having been moved at Spain at 12 by Barcelona

Brazil fell apart as a nation after losing 7-1 in their home world Cup.

Colombias goal keeper was shot because of an error

There was a war between i ink Ecuador and Peru because of a world Cup game.

Italy are devastated because they haven't made it (again)

So no other countries are as bad

By the way Messi was hated in Argentina till they won it

I mean look at the fans in the Azteca when Mexico played England.

Do you really think England "have a unique sense of entitlement?"

There were fans outside the England hotel trying to keep them awake at night and tire them out for the game (allegedly).

No team or fan turns up wanting to lose and they hope that they will win, no matter how slender the chance.

Watching other supporters it is common for teams to think they will win, not just England. You don't go along assuming you win lose.

Amazing one has to explain this 😂

I’ve been in France and Italy when they have been playing in the World Cup and the streets are empty and the celebrations after when they won was far more exuberant than they are here

but they also don’t appear to sneer at the passion some people have for football I think much of this is down to our good old snobbery as football really is a working class game here

Omg ! Yes the drums and processions in streets I was in London when a middle Eastern team won a game and that was manic also .

This.

Maybe that's why Wales doesn't usually qualify for the World Cup - because the flag is far too complicated for supporters to paint on roundabouts?!

That’ll be it!

I see your distress at a beckham mannequin and raise you the Colombian goalkeeper being shot dead for scoring an own goal.

England are mild in comparison to other countries.

Andres Escobar was a defender, not a goalkeeper. He wasn't shot dead because of the result, or the fact that the O.G. cost his nation the game, he was killed because a gambling ring had staked huge sums of money against that specific event happening.

WhenTheDustSettles · 11/06/2026 08:34

I'm trying to understand, not belittle anyone. Most of this doesn't come from the team themselves does it? Look at the abuse they got when those penalties were missed in the Euros. As a kid I remember getting upset with a sort of Guy Fawkes thing made of David Beckham and hung from a noose being shown in the papers. And that was without social media.

This with bells 🔔 on. Can’t believe so many people do not understand what the song is about 🙄,so make up a completely false narrative and run with it.

It’s a song that couldn’t be less about entitlement. It basically says they always lose and probably will again. The “coming home” was about the fact Euro 96 was being held in England, not about the trophy being brought back to England as winners.

sittingonabeach · 11/06/2026 09:05

Doesn’t the home bit also refer to the fact that England were playing at home too (just like when they won the World Cup)

Yes this is exactly what the song was referring to.

Enko · 11/06/2026 20:16

When the song came out. What's the excuse now.

No one needs an excuse or a justification to sing or listen to a song, you silly sausage 😂

JHound · 16/07/2026 14:17

We don’t have a world cup entitlement here. So I cannot answer the question.

SALaw · 16/07/2026 14:15

Enko · 11/06/2026 08:31

I grew up in Scandinavia and no that entitlement. - And I actually think thats a good word for it - is not there. There is hope and wishes and wanting the team to do great but not the "home" I find sportsmanship often lacks in the UK to me thats shown by the reputation British football fans carry abroad.

Ive always disliked the song as the idea a trophy being able to have a "home" annoys me. I recall a song done in my birth country when I was a child for a world cup where the lyric went something like "we will win and get the trophy with us home" aka they would go home with the trophy not the trophy coming home. (they didnt win but were still greeted as heros on return)

However I also fully expect to be told Im wrong and I just dont get Britishness or humour. As heavens forbid someone has a different view to the.majority. I do understand its a song. That doesn't mean I have to like it or that I think everyone thinks thst. It just means that I think its inappropriate and my view is that there is entitlement.

Sartre · 16/07/2026 10:38

My dad is French and he went absolutely ballistic when they won the 98 cup, it’s etched in my memory. To be fair, they didn’t have to wait as long as England to win it again. Understandably gutting to drop out the other night in the shocking way they did, they played abysmally.

Anyway, yes other countries take it seriously.

The sense of entitlement of Switzerland is nauseating. They felt they had a manifest destiny to win a sporting event based on their historical sense of superiority.

They invented the cockoo clock and holey cheese and they believe they are god’s gift to football. They have an inherent sense of superiority and their sense of Swiss exceptionalism make them think they have a manifest destiny to conquer the World Cup. Their flag is even an inverted St George Cross. I am so sick of this false sense of nationalism based on some artefacts of history. They are a third rate nation on the decline and they have not accepted this fact. They have some politicians that pander to their inherent racism and patriotism by looking back to a false nostalgic past of Heidi and Peter the goatherder days which appeals to their anti-EU sentiment but at the end of the day they are a tiny nation that is diminished in world affairs and has very little stake in the history of the world moving forward apart from as part of a bigger entity.

The Swiss have not realised it and their politicians do not have the heart or courage to move rheir people beyond their sense of delusion. They feel that 11 grown men kicking a pig’s bladder around will make up for their decline but at the end of the day, the industrial decline, weak leadership, poor productivity, antagonistic labour relations, a defeated workforce and lack of direction has put paid to any international ambitions The Swiss of the Toblerone and Rolex watch days are a figment of the distant past and they people have not accepted this nor have their leaders.

Ha ha, it's not just us. I was in France the year they won the world cup (2018) and have been there during many european and world cup rounds. It is wall to wall coverage on TV with every single thing poured over by endless panel of experts. France games cause whole cities to come to a halt as everyone gathers outside bars and restaurants to watch the game.

The year France got to the final the town we were in did not stop all night - there were youths driving around all night, all piled in to open car bonnets cheering and sounding their horns.
