I know many people don't like Owen Jones, but I found this article deeply disturbing.

I am a child of immigrants, and my children are mixed race. So things like this are really starting to worry me.

I completely understand why people are angry at the current rate and quality of immigration (my own family are also disgruntled with it). But Restore want to deport even those who have citizenship.

And I am genuinely concerned that things are going to get worse than Farage if the government don't get a grip on this.

@Sliverswan it's fine that you don't know there's always stuff that we don't know we're human

I wouldn't rely on any kind of AI model to give you information though

I've been interested to see what happens if you actually ask "why do people criticise it?" I find with AI you need to keep asking questions to get real information.

I think there's probably a lot of people who are defending government decisions without really understanding what happened

part of what we're seeing now is that people are starting to understand the detail of what happened and it is always the case that the devil is in the detail

like vape shops being able to sponsor visas for their relatives to come over

Pretty sure no one voted for that - and yes, it is a fact before anyone asks

Thanks .
Yes I didn't know that about vape shops either
I know there's some issues around barbers
Where I live we have more barbers than coffee shops and charity shops
We have the most barber shops than any other shop
Men must like a lot of haircuts

I don't know a lot about DEI policy
Is that where they say they only want a certain race or colour of skin people to apply
Does that actually happen??
I admit I'm being thick here

EDI equalities, diversity and inclusion policies are used by employers who decide they would like their workforce to be representative of the different demographics in society, rather than just dominated by (typically) white men, especially in top positions.
The practical reasons for this are a belief that other groups, women, people with disabilities, people who arent white, have things to contribute to the business, but face barriers white men don't, so don't get the same chance to offer their skills and businesses don't get the same access to them to utilise them.
These businesses will then make a particular effort to attract these groups.
This might mean targeted adverts, or, in the case of disabled candidates offering guaranteed interviews to people who meet the essential criteria. (Which is a good thing for anyone concerned about the welfare bill if it helps disabled people into jobs!)
Unfortunately there have been some cases where EDI policies have been implemented lazily and companies have just selected people from under represented groups in a biased way.
This is however illegal, and where it has happened those negatively impacted have won their cases.
People who disagree with EDI, because they are happy for everything to be dominated by white men use these cases to say the whole concept is wrong.
So, no in the UK its not about only allowing certain people to apply. Unless the role had an excemption under the EA, for example, only women could apply to be a worker in a women's DV refuge, it would be illegal to do that.

Yes and it’s been going on for years.

I've been a carer and stay at home mum to my autistic DC
So I'm behind in a lot of what's been happening
I read stuff in the news ,but it's hard to know if it's the truth or exaggeration

If you cannot speak the King’s English you do not deserve to live in his land. Basic communication skills are sacrosanct and a minimum to live and work in this country. If a person does not have a basic standard of English, they cannot work at a normal level to be a functioning member of society. So they need to be deported. If no one will take them then send them to Rwanda and pay them to take our dregs. This is the only way that we can save our country. Deport deport. Should not matter what colour you are, deport. Rupert Lowe is the only one who will save this country by getting rid of the detritus of this country. Basic literacy and numeracy should be the minimum to be able to serve the country. I am sick of my money being given to people who cannot serve society and just take and take because they do not integrate or have a basic level of education. Why should we keep these people in our country?

The average adult in the UK has a reading age of between 9 and 11.
Its going to be pretty quiet here.

I've just looked it up on chat gtp ,and thinks it's a good thing .. apparently it ensures fairness to opportunity

It ensures the job goes to someone who isn’t hired based on merit.

Sliverswan · 18/07/2026 12:39

IDoHaveACrystalBall · 18/07/2026 12:32

Exactly

We wouldn't even have to talk about Restore or Reform if it was handled properly ages ago - and people from outside the UK wonder why we don't handle it better! They wouldn't be granting visas in such a way

Wasn't it part of the issue with the Boriswave - the number of relatives that you're allowed to bring over? I don't know why posters are acting all surprised about it.

Again I know very little about the Boris wave
At the time ,I'm was busy raising small autistic children and up to my eyes in nappies
I trusted the government to have the best interests of the UK in its sight .
So yes I wouldn't of know you could bring loads of relatives over
I've only recently took an interest,..as things to do with newcomers seem to be constantly in the media

What we definitely need to do is stop anyone who has been elected to public office (eg Mayor of Greater Manchester) from standing for another public office (such as MP for Makerfield) before their elected term ends.

Particularly if the second role is only available because the current office holder has chosen to resign as part of internal party shenanigans that will ultimately advance his own political ambitions.

The Makerfeld by-election and the election of a new Mayor of Greater Manchester will cost taxpayers about £5 million. It's a disgraceful waste of money.

I also don't think anyone who resigns their parliamentary seat should be able to stand in the resulting by-election. More disgraceful political games from Nigel Farage.

Yes completely agree , apart from your last sentence
I don't know enough about that to have an opinion.

IDoHaveACrystalBall · 18/07/2026 12:32

Sliverswan · 18/07/2026 11:30

And that's the point
It's got out of hand
People are talking the piss
No one needs to bring 18 relatives over ..where in the world, except UK ,could we go and do the same ,then claim benefits when we get there ..the answer..is nowhere ...which is as it should be
We are such a bloody walk over the UK
I suspect the whole world is laughing at us
I don't want an extreme party in power
I want one of the main ones to grow a fucking backbone and actually bloody govern putting UK first

Exactly

Also the law needs changing,
If I vote for a politician and he / she becomes prime minister..that person should...by law ...be prime minister for 5 years
..no chopping and changing..unless of death or injury..
It really really pisses me of that they all swap about, squabbling amongst themselves for power ,taking attention away from important issues in UK.
They are all guilty of it .
This Burnham guy ..no one voted for him..
He could be worse than current one ..if that's actually possible..but either way ,no one in parliament is now focused on UK issues they are pissing about over who gets what job .
NO ...
Needs stopping

@Tiptow 👏
DEI is an unmitigated disaster incompetents in so many jobs.

Tiptow · 18/07/2026 12:05

Sometimes I think it’s a long term strategy to get a very right wing govt in power. I mean what half wits thought DEI policies would work? Now literally everything is badly run, manned by inadequate employees. It’s like a comedy of errors that we have had imposed on us by people with no functioning brains.

Sliverswan · 18/07/2026 11:59

ilovebrie8 · 18/07/2026 11:52

Yep, there will be an ultra right wing government as it’s intolerable what’s going on.

This week the 18 gazans being brought over is the icing on the cake! There is uproar on social media about this.

We are a laughing stock no other country would allow this.

Same with jobs, priority needs to be given to Brits but no we are back of the queue in our own country.

That’s a disaster too.

Unfortunately..yes we are a laughing stock
And people are here just taking what they can ,and the UK government allows it .
I really don't want an extreme government in power
I just want a mainstream one that can see sense .
Other countries seem to manage to see sense and put their people first for jobs and housing and not let people take the piss ,yet still allow genuine people in need to settle here ,with reasonable expectations in place ,for them..
Pretty much what would be expected of us going to live elsewhere
It's not rocket science, its just common sense

ilovebrie8 · 18/07/2026 11:52

Sliverswan · 18/07/2026 11:43

I don't understand why all the main parties can't see we are sleep walking in to an extreme government if they don't get a grip .
What they are offering is not enough,at the moment to make a difference.
Absolute madness

My British born DS is doing the same job. They all had the same opportunity to apply and are paid the same. The job requires a high level of numeracy, several rounds of tests and in some cases, a masters. He's one of 3 British born who passed. The rest are from India, China, the EU and Singapore.

IMO they deserve to be here.

I doubt very much there were only three British graduates who met the minimum standards for the job.
The non-Brits should not have been allowed to apply until the employer had proven there were no British candidates able and willing to do the job.
My partner's American employer had to do this to enable him to get a work visa for the US after he finished his DPhil. It's an entirely normal approach to immigration.

friedaklein · 18/07/2026 10:28

Right. Because that's what high earning immigrants with Oxbridge or Yale degrees do. Bring their mummies over.

We have 1 m NEETS who won't or can't work, entire generations on benefits, a rapidly aging population, but blaming immigrants is the easiest way out. And one that every political party resorts to when they can't solve bigger problems.

Have you missed the news this week? There is LITERALLY a case of a Gazan refugee being allowed to bring 18 family members here

You can debate the rights and wrongs of it but you can’t deny it’s happening

Have you missed that I am not talking about refugees? They can get better health care back home.

This is sheer utter madness! Hopefully it will be appealed and stopped. It’s very worrying.

They will need housed and the rest it will cost a fortune.

Don’t speak English, doubt they will ever work and they will be living off the state for ever. Neighbouring countries won’t taken Gazans as historically they make trouble and try and take over the host country.

This is what Reform and Restore want to stop and will deport them.
