To think men should not be allowed to be gynaecologists

Just that, really. Saw one last week. He was trying to be helpful, but I really really really don’t want to discuss ‘do you get clots’ ‘do you experience flooding’ ‘do you find intercourse painful’ with a strange man. Yes it would be awkward with a strange woman too, but at least I know she likely has some lived experience of what we are talking about. TBH I also question men’s motives for choosing this job, not just the licence to look at strange women’s vaginas, but I think there’s something deep in the male psyche that just loves laying down the law to women about their reproductive systems. It’s a job for a woman, and while I know men were allowed to train for it in the past, I think they should now be phased out.

I’ve seen a few in my time and the most brusque, uncaring one who tried to stick something through my cervix without pain relief and then made me feel like a wimp when it was too painful was a woman - another doctor in the room had to ask her to stop. The two male gynaes I’ve seen were much more gentle and respectful. Absolutely your choice to request a woman though.

I don't know- Adam Kay's books were wonderfully written and he was a male gynecologist and also completely gay, so really not doing it for anything other than the medical calling.

When I've had smear tests etc by a man I've actually found it less weird. It feels more natural to have a man down there than a woman for me.

Adam Kay is a vile prick who treats women as a joke and massive inconvenience not to be taken seriously when they are at their most vulnerable. I refused to watch the show after reading the book.

Have you read the book after giving birth yourself?

bluebirdsandblueskies · 11/06/2026 07:03

@Shoolatjaf doesn’t sound right. I hope they were reported.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 11/06/2026 07:01

My dm used to have a have a male gynaecologist. He wasn’t very good in her opinion. His bedside manner was very aloof. Kept repeating the same rubbish to my mum and fobbing her off. She had a prolapse and the ring (can’t remember what it’s called) was stuck and causing my mum to bleed. She had problems for about 2 years. She met a heart consultant at another hospital whilst waiting for heart bypass and he knew a colleague that could sort her out. Next day, mum was put under anaesthetic and it was taken out. By a female gynaecologist!

bluebirdsandblueskies · 11/06/2026 07:00

i used to be cynical and think why do men want to Specialise in gynaecology or breast cancer etc. However, some of the best care I had for both issues was under male doctors. They were incredibly direct, to the point and practical and this is what you need in these times.

I had the most incredible doctor when I found some lumps in my boobs I had mammograms and ultrasounds and had to have a biopsy. He didn’t think it was anything sinister but had to be sure. Before I could even say anything, he really reassured me as he said ‘I know you will go home and worry about this.’ Then when I came back for my results (the lump was benign) he then proceeded to tell me in great detail what the lump was and then went on to show me a paper his friend had written on these lumps and shared with him and he’d be reading the night before.

What I realised was WOW these people genuinely are so interested in the science behind it all - nothing sinister! They want to help people, they’ve specialised and they spend every spare second and moment thinking about their job and wanting to find out more to help people. And how lucky was I to be treated by them.

StrictlyCoffee · 11/06/2026 06:57

People aren’t handmaids just because they don’t agree with you, don’t be so rude.

I take it you also think women shouldn’t be involved in matters such as urology/prostate issues that only affect males? Do you think these women are motivated by only wanting to see cocks and arseholes?

BooneyBeautiful · 11/06/2026 06:57

Pinkchickenwine · 11/06/2026 06:49

I’m sure no one on this thread is interested in of posts about our treatment plans? It’s irrelevant!

But my male surgeon was awesome!!

I was initially only responding to someone who said all consultation breast surgeons were men, and that just isn't true. My following posts were just being polite to someone who had responded to my post. I didn't particularly want to go down this route either!

Because you’re in the minority as regards gynocology.

Really, please post the stats.

Obeyedatonce · 11/06/2026 06:56

Blanket ban on men being gynaecologists - is totally ridiculous.

Personal preference for you to want to see a female gynaecologist - absolutely reasonable.

I had a very creepy male gynecologist. He compared the tightness of my vagina to women from other parts of the country implying that they might be more promiscuous than me. He made a joke about when I last had sex and was very clearly turned on by the conversation. I was revolted by the whole situation.

I was so relieved that I was only treated by women when I was pregnant and giving birth. They weren't all as friendly or enthusiastic about their work, but I would take that 1000 times of a man enjoying

I know a male surgeon who has a fetish about the condition he treats. I am sure his patients adore his warmth and interest in them.

Men prove over and over again that many of them are driven by sex. They lose their wives, homes, money and children for it. Some high profile ones lose their jobs. There is a booming sex industry catering for them. 95% of sex crimes are committed by men. Guess what the most common crime for male prisoners over 50 is?

Yet women think that because these men are a professional role, they can simply switch it off. And anyone expressing concerns is talking 'nonsense'. I think it is more likely that a lot of male gynecologists choose that specialism because they have an unprofessional interest.

Having said all that, a lot of women do have crushes on their doctors (some of them are on this thread) and may not mind. There is a whole genre of romance fiction on the subject.

I hope you reported that gynaecologist.

somanychristmaslights · 11/06/2026 06:55

I have wondered the same thing about why a man gets into that role after I had a male surgeon do a colposcopy. and he was perfectly fine, and I was wondering in general how medical people decide what part of the body is for them 😂. But I had no issues with him being “down there”.

Ah here, the guy was a total misogynist. The way he described some of his female patients was abhorrent.

BunnyLake · 11/06/2026 06:51

My male gynae was fantastic. No complaints about him at all. I felt very well taken care of by him over the years. I wouldn’t have swapped him for anyone else.

I am out of my five years now, thank goodness. Two of the others I know have both gone down the normal route like yourself. One got through it twice, but the other one didn't make it the second time. She was my friend's mum and must have been mid to late seventies. By the time they realised it had returned, it had already spread too far.

The third one is a friend of a friend who was diagnosed about a year ago when she found a lump herself. She is actually one of Sascha's patients. She initially had chemotherapy and immunotherapy. She had an allergic reaction to one of the immunotherapy drugs, then later she was pulled off one of the chemotherapy drugs because of concerns. She eventually had a lumpectomy a few weeks ago, but Sascha didn't do a wide enough margin, so some cancer cells remained. The patient then refused to have a second lumpectomy, so after all she had been through for a year, she decided to have a mastectomy which happened about a week or so ago.

I shan't be doing any Googling. I made a decision that was 100% right for me, and you obviously did what was right for you.

Did you have any genetic testing? Only asking because triple negative is often due to a dodgy gene, but they only normally do it for the under sixties and I obviously don't know your age.

DH vasectomy was done by a woman and her students were also women. Should that also be banned ? YABU

It is perfectly valid to request a female but it is ludicrous to suggest males are banned from the profession.

Urology is not a sex-specific specialty though is it? I'm not arguing either way, but you're comparing apples and oranges.

But it's not inherently humiliating is it? The humiliation is in your head - most women may be a bit surprised and maybe a little uncomfortable to begin with but take the view that it's a job that needs to be done by a doctor, this person is a doctor, so let's get on with it. If you are so hung up about it that you can't tolerate a male doctor doing it then that's a you problem so you can ask for a female one. Don't make it every other woman's problem by reducing the number of gynaecologists.

Edit: apols that was a reply to French toast, about 20 posts up by the time I posted it.

Yanbu at all!!! Dunno why a man would want to specialise in women's fannies. It's fucking weird.

Lol at citing Adam Kay. An absolute misogynist. Just cos he's gay, doesn't mean he's fine to study my anatomy.

Honestly, the handmaids out in force on this subject amaze me.

Grow up!

I was told triple negative very likely to return hence the large amount of adjuvant chemo.

I certainly didn’t have that lot for no reason.

A simple google search would also confirm that.

Because you’re in the minority as regards gynocology.

The poll indicates I am not.

The thread is full of women saying they had excellent male gynaecologists. Are they all in the minority too, or do they just stop counting when they disagree with you?

If your argument were strong, you wouldn't need to keep explaining away every woman who disagrees with you

Says who? Have you done a survey?

ClayPotaLot · 11/06/2026 06:41

I understand women preferring to have a female gynecologist, and think it's vital that we be allowed that preference. But I would prefer we pull from the total talent pool, not just half of it and look for the best practitioner irrespective of sex.

When we look at the state of midwifery and the shocking treatment of pregnant women, with truly callous attitudes, at units around the country by that profession, I don't think there's a good case to be made that women will be treated better if a profession is kept female. (and yes, I know there isn't a ban on men becoming midwives, but less than 1% are male so it's not men that are the problem there).

FrenchT0ast · 11/06/2026 06:40

queenofcustard · 11/06/2026 06:39

But I had a bad experience with a female doctor - why is my experience less valid than women who had a bad experience with a male doctor?

Because you’re in the minority as regards gynocology.
