Just got on busy train in London. On a table a man is sat with his bag on the seat next to him and his coat on the seat opposite him - basically making it difficult for people to sit on 2/3 of the remaining free seats. Is this common??

That's fair enough but this poster is talking about aisle passengers who get angry when asked to let someone access the window seat.

She gave one example.
She also said i think they do it so they can have two seats. She also said they mostly accept. This is because most people who sit in an aisle seat..... shock horror... prefer an aisle seat. Just like she prefers a window seat.

She's not the only one allowed a preference.

Doggoneoutforapeeagain · 10/06/2026 14:02

Just say ‘excuse me please’

it’s polite, it’s not ‘excruciating’

it’s just nicely asking.

It’s basic ‘adulting’

there is no need for anyone to get in such a tizz or be rude or seethe or anything else.

it really is a minor annoyance that is so easily resolved.

Some people are a bit oblivious to others needs and spread out - so you just politely say ‘excuse me’ then take your seat.

I sit on the aisle seat because i prefer it. If you want to sit by the window I'll get up and let you in

Also, when I’m feeling exceptionally twatty, if it’s a burly looking tall younger man, I’ll head tilt and ask them if they need some help getting their bag into the overhead storage. I’m five foot nothing.

I sat on a guys bag one night. I asked him twice politely to move it and he ignored me so I sat on his poncy satchel.

Excellent. I have seen a standing passenger (whose requests for someone to move their bag were ignored) lift the bag, dump it in the aisle and sit down. Bag owner twat was furious, how dare you touch my stuff, now my bag is on the floor etc. Someone else yelled "well go and get it then". More protests. Was told loudly to shut up by another passenger. He wisely shut up, realising it was him against the rest of the carriage!

He stood up and grabbed the strap of him bag and pulled at it, I stood up to let him pull it off the seat then sat back down. Utter clown!

Ha. Good for you. I doubt he'll refuse to move his bag in future.

Im very petty and when people om trains or buses sit by the aisle with window free ill almost always ask to sit on free seat rather than a free aisle seat. One i prefer window seats and 2, i think a lot of them do it on purpose to get two seats together. They mainly accept but i had one lady get angry with me, i stood ny ground and she instead stood up rathwr than sit!

I know I’m BU but I don’t bother with politeness in these circumstances any more. They KNOW they’re taking up seats that people want but have to be asked to clear them? Rude as fuck.

i just say “move your bag”. They can tut at me all they like. I’m post-menopausal and IDGAF.

gotta be careful sometimes as ppl can kick off back at ya, that's the thing

Overthehillmum63 · 10/06/2026 13:50

Rude entitled behaviour. People like that spread themselves out to discourage other people from sharing the space, you see it in coffee shops all the time.

I sit on an aisle seat because of a man sexually assaulting me when I was sat in a window seat on a bus when I was a teenager. Since then I’ve never put myself in a position where I can be trapped in. I don’t take that seat hoping that I’ll get to be alone. It’s a bonus if I do. If someone wants to sit in the window seat I’ll happily move to let them in, but don’t expect me to take the window seat just because you think I’ve only taken the aisle seat to get 2 seats. You’ve said yourself you prefer a window seat, does it honestly not occur to you many people prefer an aisle seat?

I prefer the aisle seat on both buses and planes. I don’t give a hoot whether the middle seat (on a plane) or the window seat (on a bus) is empty or not. I will politely get up and move aside enough to let anyone who wants the empty seat move past me to take it. Simple.

my dh commutes most days into london=he hasnt got patirnce anymore just looks at them and if they dont move their bag he sits on it

ohyesido · 10/06/2026 13:47

It’s very common and people get away with it because others are too polite or afraid of confrontation to say anything. If someone called them out they would most likely move without a word

BashfulClam · 10/06/2026 13:47

JimBobsWife · 10/06/2026 13:41

That's brilliant. What did he do? Was it uncomfortable?

He then grabbed the strap and I stood up as he pulled it out from beneath me. I just thought ‘aye that’ll be right!’

Rightsraptor · 10/06/2026 13:46

I've been on trains where they've announced that the only thing allowed on a seat is a human bum, so if you've got you bag or coat on one, move it. We never used to be so selfish/though less as a nation.

kerryanna1 · 10/06/2026 13:45

Bellaboo01 · 10/06/2026 12:31

Cant have been that busy if he was able to get 3 seats for himself. Just tell him to move his stuff - simple!

lol ! simples :))

How many people put their coat on the seat across the table when they could just put it on top of the small bag on the seat next to him? He wasn’t just ‘spreading out’, he was hoping nobody would sit there so he could spread his legs. And of course I said ‘is this yours’ re the coat. And the train was busy!

Edited

Same thing happened to me but it was a woman! So anyone can do it not just men.

Overwhelmedandtired · 10/06/2026 13:42

TeutoburgForest · 10/06/2026 13:28

So interesting. I just don’t get why the onus should be on people wanting to sit down to ‘use their words’ rather than people seat hogging to be aware and move their stuff?

The onus should absolutely be on them to be aware and move their stuff. However, the people like the man you encountered aren't unaware, they are entitled and rude. They are more bothered about their own comfort levels being high, than taking up a little less space to help others. If no-one says something to them, as probably happens a reasonable amount of the time, they get away with it and are more likely to keep doing it.

I agree. Most ppl know that its good manners to buy a round of drinks, or to bring a bottle/ some kind of offering to a party. The onus should be on the person sitting to move their bags if ppl are standing.

ilovemybluesharpie · 10/06/2026 13:38

A lot of people do this in the hope that nobody will challenge them. I got on my train once with my disabled mum and a 6yo and nobody moved their stuff to free up a seat. I asked 3 people if they could please move their bags so we could sit down. A lot of people are just so selfish or thoughtless. (Yes a lot of us put our bags next to us, but always move them when people are boarding).
