First I ever heard of it was yesterday.

People act like it’s only non white people that do this.

A police mugshot of Alina Burns, wearing a black hooded jacket and a grey T-shirt. She has blue eyes and her blonde hair is closely shaven. She is standing against a light grey background, looking ahead with a blank expression.

Father of jailed neo-Nazi teenager says 'everyone failed her'

Alina Burns, 19, was jailed in May for attempting to behead a barber.

What pattern?

I can't take such a ridiculous question, seriously.

devongirl12 · 10/06/2026 13:24

Alina Burns was tiny, severely anorexic and very vulnerable.

The Iranian barber she attacked took the axe off her pretty swiftly and suffered only minor injuries.

Of course it shouldn’t have happened at all, and he has suffered some emotional trauma from it, but it is just not the same as the attack in Belfast.

Maybe if a pattern of savagery didn't keep presenting itself the media coverage night be different. One white girl tries to carry out a beheading. How many other cases are there with the same targetted act of barbarism?

What pattern?

It's interesting how the article leads with her father on how the perpetrator was failed! Why the sympathetic coverage? Because of her sex? Age? Race? How do we feel about calling her 'scum'? Is it harder than thinking of that monster in Belfast as scum?

For what it's worth, they are both monsters in my eyes. Her mental health is no excuse, and any past trauma the perpetrator in Belfast may have experienced is no excuse. The vast majority of mentally ill and traumstised people are a risk to themselves rather than others, and neither factor explains why these monsters chose hatred.

Because this is a unique case in our entire history of an 1. English 2. teenage 3. girl - carrying out an attack like this. That demands investigation and reflection to understand what led to it - in the same way that the death of Jamie Bulger led to a national conversation.

And what do you know we discover a childhood blighted by failure from the state, with her homeless English family forced to live in hotel rooms, while migrants jump to the front of the housing queue.

Who radicalized her? Our upside-down malicious state did.

Ablondiebutagoody · 10/06/2026 13:11

Isn't it that people think we have enough criminals of our own, why import more?

The one in the article above was born here so we're stuck with her whether we like it or not, whereas politicians have decided to let people like the Sudanese man stay (having travelled through several safe countries).

Maybe the media coverage might include ALL the facts instead of just the ones that'll have a certain percentage of the population frothing at the mouth.

The replies don't "say it all", because so few people are replying, despite there being quite a lot of people viewing the thread.
Many people feel that one type of violence is more organic in nature, having always existed in society, and the other has been imposed by the actions of the state.
One of the reasons that there has become such a polarity of viewpoint around this issue is that one part of society (the middle class) has been largely insulated from the negative effects of this state imposed action. i.e. you don't get many asylum hotels and HMO's in the Shires or naice places where there is a Gails or a Cook. The legal mass migration that has been allowed since COVID has also been felt more by the working classes as this wave was specifically encouraged by the state to suppress wage inflation after lockdown. Again, not something that impacted the middle classes as the majority of the migration has been lower skilled than previous waves.
Crime carried out by asylum seekers/immigrants therefore, has become (and will continue to be) a symbol of a state that is increasingly despised by a large proportion of its citizens. Whereas crimes not carried out by this group doesn't engender the same response as the link to the state is less obvious (though, in my personal opinion, is indirectly increased by state incompetence).

If the response to racist attack is to be rioting will you also be in full support of minority ethnic groups who are subjected to racist attacks daily also rioting in protest?
Thought not. How dare "they" riot on "our streets"

Why shouldn't they protest if they feel singled out? Anyone has the right to do that under freedom laws. We know how those protests work out - BLM and Palestine, so they are hardly neing denied the 'right' to riot. Just a shame many abuse freedom of speech on both sides.

montysmaw · 10/06/2026 12:48

LuckyHazelFox · 10/06/2026 11:36

I take it we can assume the attacker is racist. That applies to every single on of these - far too many - attacks. Or is that the wrong kind of racism?

Sskka · 10/06/2026 12:40

I get what you’re saying. On the other hand, when we are bringing people in who commit savagery then it’s obviously a different and even more serious issue.

That would explain why one type meets the threshold for mass outrage, and the other type does not.

Whiski · 10/06/2026 11:10

Why haven’t we heard of it though? This is the real two tier system that the far-right try to claim is affecting them.

This girl was radicalised so clearly it’s an act of terrorism but because she is white it is classed as a mental health issue. This is even memed time and time again in social media

But we have heard about it, it was reported by the BBC.

Many people have heard of it though? I mean you posted a link to the BBC dated 4th June. It was definitely on radio news because my daughter heard it in the car and was asking questions about it.

The fact there was a video of the incident in Belfast means it spread further faster as well.

BMW58 · 10/06/2026 12:00

I read about it a while ago so it WAS in the papers.

When an incident is being used as an excuse for racists riots and burning innocent people out of their homes I dont think its whataboutary to point out that its not only "these people" (anybody not white ) who behead people.

Or are you fine with white beheaders?

In Scotland 3 white yobs chased down and butchered another boy during a sunny day at the beach. There were no riots.
I wonder if the "patriots" rioting in Glasgow about something that happened in northern Ireland even gave it a thought.

Edited

Absolutely @montysmaw.

The deaths of Kayden Moy and John McNab by stabbing have been all but ignored because their attackers were white.

I'm from the same town as Kayden. His attackers were known to the police before the stabbing and nothing was done. John McNab's killer was on bail for a knife crime.

These deserve attention because action could have prevented these crimes. Action is needed against knife crime to stop them happening again.

We need to look at child poverty and abuse, the lack of mental health provision, and the availability of deadly weapons. Instead of totally useless conversations about race and religion which ignore the individual to pander to prejudice.

Not excusing her behaviour but I expect her father feels she was failed because it would appear he had repeatedly tried to get her help. He didn't just ignore it.

DoraSpenlow · 10/06/2026 11:37

Yes, I had heard about this dreadful incident. Must have been on the TV or radio because I don't read papers much.

I think the reason people get so annoyed (no excuse for rioting and violence though) is that this girl and her family would appear to have been in the UK for generations (willing to be corrected) so we have no choice as to whether she lives here or not. The man in Northern Ireland had been granted asylum. A safe place to live from whatever he was fleeing from in his home country, and he repays the favour by trying to murder someone. Unfortunately it has happened too many times with rapes, attacks, general criminal activity being carried out by people we have given a safe haven to and people are sick of it. Yes, I know not all immigrants/asylum seekers are criminals. Yes, I know people who have lived here for generations can also be criminals. We just don't need to be importing more.

The whole system needs a thorough overhaul so that we can be sure who we are letting make their lives here. We don't go out without locking our doors because we don't want just anybody to make free with our homes. It should be the same with our country.

Maybe re title your thread to ‘whataboutery’. It’s a more apt description of this desperate attempt to deflect. Man, the woke desperation is really kicking in now.

Hardly woke. It's a valid point. The media are very selective about what they want to gnash their teeth about.

I didn't see much shock/horror/placard waving over Stephen McCullough either.

No I did not hear about it either way it's disgusting thing to have happened to someone or by attempted to have happened to anyone and it's not something that was commonplace in my childhood 30 years ago and it's not something I want happening now

It's been so interesting to watch Mumsnet these last few days. There really is such a stark polarisation now that both 'sides' really are just talking past each other.
There is no attempt at dialectic anymore. Every time someone attempts to debate in good faith, another thread is started.

Yes, it's really stark and awful isn't it. People seem to have lost the ability to listen, think rationally and critically, pause and reflect, and respond later. We're not in a good place. I think our generation (adults who grew up without the internet and have taken to it like a duck to water) are pretty much entirely fucked now. Maybe our kids can do better
