Fed up with colleague rimming this down my throat?

I’ve a colleague who I get along with at work, we chat and know a reasonable amount about each other.

She has dated a few people over the past year of two, she’s currently seeing someone who is getting divorced. It seems to be getting a bit serious in her words (only been a few weeks) and they’ve discussed buying a house down the line.

He has a very well paying job and she has said they’ll either be able to buy somewhere and be Mortgage free, or buy a big house in a great area which she never thought she’d be able to live in. Great, I do want her to be happy.

My ‘AIBU’ is whether I am wrong to feel fed up with her mentioning his wealth at every opportunity, and how she could never dream of ‘being mortgage free at her age’. It is starting to feel gloaty now…

Interesting thread title…

Lol my reaction too!

Glasgowrache · 11/06/2026 18:45

Thanks all. She’s not a younger woman compared to him, they are both mid 40’s and knew each other for a while through a social setting (think a club). So maybe it will work. She just seems fixated on the possibilities financially and with the house considering it’s so early.

Smile and drink your coffee.
she has only known him a few weeks and he is probably embellishing his wealth to sound great. It’s also highly unlikely he is going to put her name on the deeds if it’s his money buying the house, sounds like she is caught up in the fantasy.

This. Just nod and smile.
If it happens, good luck to her. But seems very premature of her.

Reply with "that's nice for you" and move on to another subject.

berightorbehappy · 11/06/2026 07:29

Thanks for the laugh with the title !

Sounds like a lot of things will have to fall into place for her to have this dream come true. No point saying anything to her as she’s in a bubble, but I would just be very busy and distracted when she talks and not comment back at all if you can help it. The more you engage in it now the more you’ll be dragged into it if it all goes wrong and she wants to talk to you about that too.

Lemonymint · 11/06/2026 04:35

So after likely giving half of the marital assets to his wife, including the existing house, and paying child support he is likely not going to be mortgage free himself and I doubt his plans include putting her on the deeds and making her mortgage free at a stroke. She might get to move to pay "rent", and provide domestic and sexual services to the chap - the cooking, the cleaning, the grocery shopping etc. Just keep saying vaguely, "How lovely". I think reality is going to catch up with her shortly.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 11/06/2026 01:41

Why are you giving her the time of day.
Can't you have your coffee somewhere else. Or when she speaks to you say. Sorry you are busy.

Her story sounds like complete BS

NameChangeMay2026 · 10/06/2026 22:34

I'd be worried she was setting herself up for heartbreak or at least a very difficult situation. I would be tempted to say that I'm concerned about it all moving too quickly, because he's not even divorced yet, there are teens involved, and even if the friend and the new man stay together, dealing with a recent ex-wife and teens who have just been through a big upheaval is bound to bring a lot of difficulties and challenges.

But she would probably just think you were envious and wanted to be negative.

So I don't think there's much you can do about it except nod and smile, or say straight up, with some humour, "Well, I'm happy for you, but since I'll be working for decades yet, put a sock in it would you!"

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 10/06/2026 21:42

When my dad was going through divorce I’m sure he was telling his 29 year old gf how loaded he was and how they were going to live happily ever after in a big house.. but he was also sobbing on the phone to my mum every night begging to come home 😭😭 can’t trust a word a lot of these men say

Afterthefact · 10/06/2026 21:18

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Get her a reservation at Heartbreak Hotel. Maybe she has a lot to learn and a few more frogs to kiss before she comes back down to earth.

Irritating granted, but get over it. There are plenty of dickheads out there.

Surgz · 10/06/2026 18:25

TbH sounds like shes falling for some serious bullshit. Divorced men do not tend to be rolling in it especially if they have kids.. I'd be more worried about mopping up copious tears in a few months time! but yep a pain to.listen to...

CamilleBeauchamp · 10/06/2026 10:04

You're right to be annoyed... That's going to make you late to the fisting... 😐

I would have to change my surname LOL!!! Mind you, when you were younger/when I was younger, the term 'rimm-ing' wasn't a thing (I don't think so anyway. I hadn't heard of it myself til this century ...)

I’d never heard of rimming in my late 20s, I’m now 54.

Rimmer is a bone fide surname...I had a Mrs Rimmer at church group lol but I was innocent then and didnt get the joke

I think I’d smile kindly, drink my brew and let her get on with it

I met a girl through work events and became friends with her. She had been with her DP for years - he had a very well paying job, slightly older than her and he had got in at a good time with buying his property so now was mortgage free AND had serious equity

She told me they were looking for large 4-5 bed houses in my area - she has one child who wasn’t his - and she would be mortgage free, able to go part time or if they bought a slightly smaller/cheaper house she could give up work altogether. I even sent her details on a few I’d seen near to me

Ive no doubt she loudly told a LOT of people

Fast forward 12 months and there was no move, they have in fact split up. And she’s back in her smallish house she had rented out to move into his house.

I feel so sorry for her. I’ve no doubt she’s had to have a large slice of humble pie

BakedBeansforabrain · 10/06/2026 09:26

She sounds like an arse

The title of this post pulled me in. It promised so much.

And delivered so little.

I'm gutted. 😭

Maybe OP’s colleague would secretly like to be rimmed by her or vice versa?!

CruCru · 10/06/2026 07:24

Honestly? He’s getting divorced and has children. If he really is rich then the divorce is going to take a while … and he will be appalled to discover that his wife is entitled to half.

At best this won’t last long, he wants a distraction but he won’t be in a position to get serious for quite a long time.

At worst, he could really do with somewhere decent to live and someone to help feed / clothe / house his children when they are with him.
