What do you consider a treat?

What do you consider a treat?

No right or wrong answer here - because it will mean different things to different people.

On another thread I have stated that a takeaway coffee or a basic chain lunch is more functional than a treat for me. I am not saying that it isn't a treat to others.

It was even suggested because I went shopping for a chopping board it was a treat.

So what does a treat look like to you?

I just did. You give every sign of a lack of self esteem.
Your turn to tell me why I’m wrong and why you create so many threads about how much money you have.

You are free to believe what you want to believe.

😂

Don’t be so judgmental. Studied = read carefully. I read posts carefully which I find interesting. I know lots of people scroll quickly down pages and that’s why there are so many irrelevant / pointless posts.
It’s okay to take an interest. 🙂

‘I’ve studied’ - fucking hell. Relax with the faux intellectualism. You’re on Mumsnet.

I wouldn’t agree I know nothing about you. I’ve studied quite a few of your posts quite carefully .
I agree I’m making a generalisation but generalisations can be useful and truthful .
There’s no doubt that you’re unnaturally preoccupied with the money that, as you’ve portrayed it, your DH has made.
Also , with playing a strange cat and mouse game , where you aspire to emphasise the difference between your situation and others, while believing you’re giving away nothing about yourself.
I’m afraid it’s a general truth that people who do these things are highly likely to to be suffering a lack of self esteem. Really , it’s the only explanation for such behaviour
So, in the absence of any other explanation, I think personal insecurity is the convincing explanation.
What is certain is that careful readers of your posts certainly do know something about you! 🙂

Any meal out

I especially love an occasional coffee on my own in a cafe

You know nothing about me, but thought it reasonable to make personal comments.

So no I wasn't being serious.

Takeaway coffee is for me.

I leave for work at 7.45, get there at 8.30. I stop on the way for a nice strong coffee, despite being able to have coffee at home and at work.

I then go to Starbucks around 11 when working.
It's not convenience because it would be more convenient to make coffee at home or work. I enjoy the coffee so it is a treat for me.

I wouldn't consider anything else really that I buy or do to be a treat.

Well only you would know. If not, then you might want to reflect on why you are so keen to tell the world how much money you have. As an outsider looking it, It's so stark.

As I am getting older I find self reflection increasingly important.

All the best.

And you.

None of us know you but what we chose to put out into the world says something about us. Your posts certainly point to a preoccupation with wealth / spending / lifestyle.

Do you think you have status anxiety OP?

No.

A take away, or a nice coffee in a coffee shop, or a meal out.

I'm very happy to answer this if your comment is genuine. So may of your posts are tongue in cheek, that I can't be sure you're being serious here?

@coulditbeme2323 Is there a minimum price for you in order to consider it a treat? If yes, I think you're poor.

No of course not.

I don't think it's about price.

I took my teen to lunch as a local farm tea shop - we had a lovely lunch out which didn’t cost an arm and a leg and there is no mobile signal there (win!). It was a treat as I didn’t have to cook, and we were both forced to talk which was really lovely 😊

ObelixtheGaul · 09/06/2026 19:54

Anything that doesn't involve me preparing it or having to clear up after it is a treat. Doesn't have to be fancy, I have never eaten in a Michelin starred restaurant.

LanyardSpaghetti · 09/06/2026 19:48

@DarkForces Could you chop on one side of the board and keep the other side pristine?

LanyardSpaghetti · 09/06/2026 19:46

Oooh...

  • the malted sourdough I get from my local bakery, when I have time to pop out at lunchtime, and when they still have some left
  • any of the cheeses from our local dairy, or their amazing butter, particularly in combination with the sourdough
  • when my youngest makes me a frothy coffee AND cleans the machine afterwards
  • homemade mincemeat baked into pretty much anything
  • homemade chutney
  • homemade xmas pud
  • a flavoursome herbed beef and tomato stew using local grass-fed beef with dumplings
  • when my eldest surprises me with some cake that I didn't know they'd made
  • having the sort of work to churn through which is compatible with also listening to a podcast
  • being able to get my kids to their activities and watching them doing their stuff
  • a high-quality spa day and full body massage

So, mainly food.

Papyrophile · 09/06/2026 19:37

Being lucky enough to get to the local cheese shop and finding that they have Flower Marie cheeses in stock. It's incredibly popular and they have to ration them, so if you get one once a year, it's a massive treat.

aLFIESMA · 09/06/2026 19:32

I shouldn't like to ever get to the stage where my little treats (same as most others, coffees out, books, flowers etc) dissolve into everyday things that no longer light me up inside! Long live Small Pleasures Flowers

Strawberryteabag · 09/06/2026 19:13

If buying myself something it would be new trainers or perfume, or if food a slice of cake or an ice cream from the ice cream man 😊

XenoBitch · 09/06/2026 18:45

To me, cut flowers. I get some every so often for myself.
They don't serve any practical function other than to be a bit of brightness in my house.
