Is it too far gone now?

I don’t know if we can go back to the way we were. Pre 2010 we were a pretty good country and it’s hard to imagine getting back what we had then.

We need to try and not give up!

I for one am not leaving the country whatever happens. It’s my country and I’m going to fight for it, right wing bigots be damned.

OneTealShaker · 09/06/2026 07:12

Yes. The country’s descent into irrelevance and a middle income country is done.

Next is humiliation as a self hating woke hellhole where people are locked up for misgendering others before they are dealt with for violent crime, where they can just plead some protected characteristic, and entrance into the league of low income countries.

How do you explain the local election results? Massive amount for Reform, not a small proportion.. Wouldn't be shocked when they get voted in next election, sadly needlessly to say.

I agree. Its like the remainers before brexit and the Kamala supporters before Trump. The writings on the wall.

I think what this poster means is they’d like to go back to more police brutality and overt discrimination toward black and brown people. More stop and search, more casual beatings, that sort of thing. Bit like Soweto in the 1970s.

Or maybe she/he means stop the hate marches?

If we don’t rejoin the EU then yes.

The magical EU where utopia is that way. Is the EU going to stop knife crime?

LuckyHazelFox · 09/06/2026 07:04

Under this government, the rot will continue. No forward thinking, just stuck in the old give the unions and benefit claimants what they want mentality. No growth, not enough money going into defence because they'd rather it be thrown at parents with more than two kids and bone idle scroungers. The middle ground for legitimate claims fair enough. That's Labour all over for you, there's no balance.

ChangeyNameyforthis · 09/06/2026 07:00

A lot of countries have a lot of problems. We are not the only one.

Is it too late to turn the UK around. Yes, I think it is. Even if we get in a government that wants to make changes, the opposition will gang up to bring it down. You'll never get benefit curbs, or get rid of people who have come here and committed heinous crimes. There are too many people who ideological steadfast agendas who will always have backing to stop things.

Look after you and your own. That is all you can do now.

FrenchT0ast · 09/06/2026 06:58

No I was just one of the English speaking patients at the bottom of the heap

Logically everyone is at the bottom of the wait list when they join it. And over time they work their way up the list.

You are justifiably unhappy that you are waiting a long time for nhs services, but that's due to numbers of referrals, cuts in funding and nhs inefficiencies, people not turning up for appts, rather than one group being put to the bottom of the list. Or are you an nhs manager with access to lots of different wait lists that you can know for sure that certain groups are put to the bottom? I am, and can say for sure in my area that that is not the case

The nhs does need a total overhaul though, but which parry is actually going to be brave and smart enough to do so?

KateSixer · 09/06/2026 06:35

I think we are finished unless politicians (and crucially more than half the population) realises money does not grow on trees.

To be successful as a country you need meaningful economic growth in the private sector.

The private sector pays for the public sector and welfare.

If we don't radically slim our bloated and inefficient public sector and reduce our welfare costs we are doomed.

Why would anyone start a business in the UK now if they had the option of starting it elsewhere. Until the UK once again becomes an attractive place to start and grow businesses we are going to keep sinking.

The way it was before

Before what? Before Covid? Before the banking crisis? Before Thatcher? Before WW2? Before the Depression of the 1930s?

Berlin2018 · 09/06/2026 02:18

These posts are so depressing, people just falling for inaccurate right wing clap trap. If someone offers simple answers to what are complex global problems then you really can’t trust them. Humans seem destined to constantly repeat the same mistakes.

The way it was before

Time travel is not possible. Nor is freezing time.

This was as true now it was in 2012, 1996, 1976, 1946 or 46BC.

AImportantMermaid · 09/06/2026 00:26

Most of this shit has been going on for decades. It’s not new - it’s just that news is so much more accessible as is our ‘need’ for it. Bad news sells so the media are churning out more and more - news media doesn’t report the news; it creates the news in order to sell more papers/likes/adverts.

When would you like to go back to? The 1970s? General strikes, power cuts and Valium?
The 1980s - miner’s strike, AIDS, threat of nuclear war?
The 1990s - Gulf War, Diana death
The 2000s -9/11, Iraq War, financial crisis, London bombings?
The 2010s - Brexit, Grenfell, Trump?

What I do observe in my own shithole town:

potholes everywhere
lots of cheap quality new build housing but no real investment in supporting infrastructure
lots of newly arrived people
green belt land being eroded all the time
empty town/city centres
fewer people abiding by the Highway Code on the road
lack of jobs for young people
Flags
Dog shit bags and litter

What I observe that doesn’t seem so bad:

NHS services
Public transport (frequency and efficiency)
Parks and heritage sites
School place availability
Sporting events and concerts
The number of people who don’t fly flags
Wetherspoons!

What this country needs to ‘turn it around’ is a thriving economy and a boost to British business. But unfortunately we will have to wait until the predictable ‘tax anything that moves to pay benefits’ government is kicked out, and hopefully we get a new set of ministers who are more business minded and forward thinking.

The UK has been without any real means of making money for many a year. Every gov has kicked the can down the road, tinkering around the edges with taxes and whatnot and money has gone and the country is falling apart.
Labour, who you think are not doing any good are in fact, doing good. Productivity growth is up, investments are being secured.
And they've inherited a very badly run UK, services stripped, biggest debt in a long long time, Brexit, Russian War and now Iran war. This is not easy!

And while they are far from perfect they're doing better than the British press right wing spin would lead you to believe.

Anarchy99 · 09/06/2026 00:19

Take a look at the news. Countries are at war and tearing each other to shreds, innocent people are being caught up in it, some countries have people who are starving on the streets.

Do you really think we are in a worse position than anyone else? The cost of living is tough but we have the NHS (crap though it is), the welfare state and the right to vote for our representatives.

Sivilpea · 09/06/2026 00:10

I think it is too far gone yes.

Certain cultures cannot gel well together, particularly the extremists amongst them and we've allowed full reign and no restraint.

Expecting them to co exist peacefully when they categorically do not align within a tightly packed population is proving to be a recipe for disaster.

We can be multi racial but multicultural? No. I firmly believe that racism is going to get worse because of the problems surrounding the desperation to be fully multicultural. We are tiny island fgs!

And we are not even close to seeing the full fall out of this yet.

BurntBroccoli · 09/06/2026 00:10

Marmalademorning · 08/06/2026 23:26

It really isn’t. The country is in an absolute mess thanks to successive governments and complacency over the years.

The economy is in flatline, living standards are in free fall. The NHS is in a mess. We sold off all our industry. The armed forces have been left to rack and ruin for years, our waters are polluted, our politicians sold off all our gas storage, we don’t really have any effective border controls, kids mental health in decline - no surprise really as there’s hardly any prospects for them anymore - practically zero chance of them getting on the housing ladder now unless mummy and daddy are rich and they have a nice trust fund tucked away. It’s no wonder so many young people are choosing not to have children.

I could go on, but you get the gist.

It’s really depressing.

Most of those were Tory policies.

No I was just one of the English speaking patients at the bottom of the heap

So you've taken your own personal experience, where you've probably made lots of assumptions, and extrapolated it to the entirety of the UK...

Were you explicitly told by health professionals that you were at the bottom of the list or have you jumped to conclusions and made it up?

Renamedefault · 09/06/2026 00:06

Firetreev · 08/06/2026 23:21

Where did you get this statistic? I haven't seen this in any nursery, the vast majority of children are white. Perhaps in some inner city locations, but this statistic doesn't beat out across the country.

I’ve done a very quick google search and it put kids at 4-5 as 63-68% white British and “white” as high as 73%.

Obviously those stats might be wrong too, but clearly there’s some doubt about the correct figure.

DD goes to a school in a major multicultural city and in her 21 strong class, every child bar 2 of them are white.

Happyjoe · 09/06/2026 00:06

DogAnxiety · 08/06/2026 23:35

People’s voting patterns in mid-term locals aren't a very good indicator of who they vote for in a general election 2+ years later. Completely erroneously, people often see local elections as consequence-free and a bit like a popularity contest, when in reality local elections are pretty important at determining how your life pans out.

My main point though was that extreme parties trading on whipping up racial hatred are generally not very succesful in the UK. As a country, it’s too diverse, too educated, too much shaped by wave after wave of immigration.

People voting for Reform will also react very badly, by and large, to any sense they’ve been tricked, misled, or hoodwinked, and Reform have hoisted themselves by their own petard there - witness people who have had to resign because of their stupid social media posts or unpalatable history…

I hope you're right but I don't think so.
The UK is not in a good place, too many blame the wrong people and will vote accordingly and unfortunately they think Reform is the answer as never been in charge before.

I don't think our past will predict our future on this one but would more than happily eat my words.

I believe it's based on a definition of white British which means that not only must the kid be white and born in the UK but both parents must also have been born in the UK. Otherwise the child can be pale as milk but is still counted in the "not white British" side of the stats. Looked at like that things are really dire! Not only is our own king not white British but neither was Winston Churchill. Or for that matter Nigel Farage's own children or even Stephen Yaxley Lennon. The country is in a truly dire state when not even our far right agitors are white British!!!

It's a definition deliberately chosen to produce misleading statistics.

This is bullshit. Have you pulled it out of your arse or swallowed it whole from GB News? Stop falling for this nonsense, it's actually embarrassing.
