AIBU to think schools should not allow students to wear black trainers all day, every day?

My child's high school is allowing students to wear black trainers all day. I think this is bad for their feet, more expensive for parents, and a drop in standards.

AIBU?

Another thread blaming schools. When are people going to take responsibility for themselves?

I wasn’t aware that schools purchased and handed out black trainers? So parents are buying them aren’t they so parents are letting their children wear them all day. I assume I’ll be told that it’s sooooo difficult for parents as everyone is wearing them and your children will be somehow made fun of or something. Basically just parent up and send your child in what you deem acceptable.

Yes standards have dropped, it doesn’t mean you have to drop yours. Stop being a sheep, think for yourself.

Dress standards have gone downhill from when I was at school. I'm 60 now. We all had time dress smartly in skirts, blouses G/shirts B with ties. And blazers and/or jumpers. Plus black 'shoes'. Trainers or Plimsols were not allowed to be worn with school uniforms..

Todday's kids don't evrn do their ties up like in my day, where they had to be done up to the neck. Half of today's children, more so secondary school go around with the ties drooping down halfway down their chest looking totally scruffy!

Why are children being required to wear ties to school in the first place? Hardly anyone I know wears a tie to work these days. Why are we holding children to these silly standards?

I am 58 and from a country without a uniform fetish. I went to school in a rah rah skirt in 1984... And we all turned out fine.

Yep, they are bad for not just your feet but posture, knees and back if worn long term, which they weren't intended to be for. trainers are for sports wear and running not for walking and everyday use

No, sprinting trainers designed for sprinting may not be great for all day - they may tip you forward a bit and be not great for posture. But you can also buy trainers for cross country that are far more comfortable to wear for a day than school shoes.

I remember having to break shoes in and all the blood on my socks as plasters over the heels came off during the day. I wasn't the only one.

I have never had blood on my feet and socks from wearing trainers. We shouldn’t be doing this to kids, trainers is a great idea.

glaciercherry · 10/06/2026 08:40

What? It’s much better for their feet than smart shoes.

It is a drop in standards and speaks to low aspirations. What's the rest of the uniform like? Polo's?

The real drop in standards is putting an apostrophe in a plural

Mackerelfillets · 09/06/2026 22:40

My kids high school bans trainers. They have to be proper shoes with no embellishments. I have been known to use black nail varnish on very thin gold band on shoes. Even a limit on heels to certain heights. One of my kids was told by a podiatrist to wear trainers while she was recovering from an injury and she had to repeatedly show his letter as she was asked multiple times why she was wearing trainers. Offenders got sent to the library or given a different pair to wear until the end of the day.

Pupils should have to wear proper school shoes. And children who attend school are "pupils", not "students".

You will be really cross at the description my child’s school uses of ‘young adults’ from year 7 up! I do raise an eyebrow but there are bigger fish to fry…

Are you OK...?

How bloody rude and patronising with that gif 🙄

You can disagree, but no need to be so belittling of the OP.

durdledoris · 09/06/2026 21:13

My dd has just been told by orthotics at our hospital she needs to wear trainers to school so they can't be that bad for her feet!

Peacewillcome · 09/06/2026 21:10

Bluedenimdoglover · 09/06/2026 20:43

Why would they be bad for the feet? They are made for running, walking, sport. Probably better than rigid shoes.

Ha ha! I am an older parent so I remember this being a common belief in the 70s and early 80s when trainers really
gained in popularity. Never made sense and I remember when my 80 year old
granddad had to go to a sports store with a bit of paper the occupational therapist had jotted down a couple of recommended brands of trainers on! He wore a three piece suit, shirt, tie and flashy trainers!

Have a day off! What does it matter in the grand scheme of things!

Our local high school are part of the black trainers, honestly it’s fine. I do think overall it’s probably better to buy Nike type stuff as it tends to be harder wearing. My two will often kill supermarket trainers in a matter of weeks as they are poorly made. Asda ones were particularly shocking, Aldi ones much better but still.

Given these kids are always being told they are too sedentary being able to run around without needing to change shoes is a good thing.

my child’s secondary shoe policy is black trainers. I thought they were rare. But clearly not!

I agree this is all ok! Many kids have a heck of a way to walk to school (2.8k in my child’s case) then are very active in school so the trainers work well. If you look up ‘school shoes’ on Next, you will find a few pairs on there that are suitable for school policies and around the £30-£35 mark not hundreds.

some schools have even gone one step further and adopted a tracksuit and trainers as the entire uniform!

I’d also like to see your source for this please.

‘A drop in standards’ - oh God. I bet she’s mustard keen on them learning Latin

wizzbitt · 09/06/2026 19:50

Much more comfortable. Easier to play football in at break. Easier to run for bus.

My podiatrist would say otherwise.

Lollipop81 · 09/06/2026 18:52

I wish all schools would do this think it’s ridiculous children as young as 4 are forced to wear uncomfortable school shoes all day every day, when they are climbing playing etc. I also think the uniform should be jogging bottoms and T-shirts not shirts with buttons and ties, especially for primary school. Society is changing, dress codes in the work place are more relaxed now etc, it’s about time schools caught up and let children relax and be children.

ThreeStripeFrankie · 09/06/2026 18:41

I was delighted when our school changed to this.
Although the trainers mine wear are more expensive than the shoes they used to wear they last much longer as they’re not getting wrecked playing football and my teens wear them out of school too.

Itsalotisntit · 09/06/2026 18:38

You, as a parent decide if your child wears black shoes or black trainers day to day. Other people’s children are not your concern.

Allonthesametrain · 09/06/2026 18:38

As a teacher and parent I think it's better for them to be comfortable, certainly for having a game of footy outside. Would prefer to wear them myself as a lot of standing and dashing about in school!
